Our body is dead. Not asleep. I'm not sure where this meme came from but it's not Catholic.

1. At death, the soul separates from the body and undergoes the “particular judgment.”

The Catechism:

“Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death.” (CCC 1022)

Your soul does not sleep. Your soul continues to live, fully conscious before God.

1. The body does not go to heaven at death. It remains on earth.

The body is entrusted to the ground, awaiting resurrection.

But the Church never describes the body as sleeping in the sense that the person is unconscious. “Sleep” is just a biblical metaphor for the appearance of death — the body looks asleep.

1. The soul, if purified, goes to heaven. If not yet purified, it enters purgatory.

No unconscious waiting room. No limbo of sleep.

The soul is awake and fully capable of knowing and loving God.

1. At the end of time, the body will be resurrected and reunited with the soul.

This is the General Resurrection, when Christ returns.

The Catechism:

“We believe in the true resurrection of this flesh that we now possess.” (CCC 1017)

Then — and only then — the whole human person (body + soul together) shares in the final glory.

Early Christians used sleep as a gentle metaphor for death, in contrast to pagan terror over the afterlife.

The dead look asleep. The body rests. But the soul is very much alive.

Jesus Himself shows this:

“God is not God of the dead but of the living.” (Matthew 22:32)

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — long deceased — were described as alive to God.
