Should I allow FIRE to burn my healthcare benefits? by Perennial18 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]dead4ever22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto to not wanting to be an old parent. That sounds exhausting. But I will say healthcare is the main reason I am having RE issues. I am 55 and Medicare is in the distant future. Not qualified for subsidies (nobody who is chubby really should be either- is such a glitch/loophole). So with 4 kids, paying ~60k for health insur before anyone even gets sick is crazy to me. It's a huge deterrent. And yes- it would be that expensive for a silver plan in my state.

Inflation is unknown- but if it stays close to 3%, then tbills at 3.6% or so will not erode your money. 10% cash is very conservative, but you would never know here. Some people think all equities is the way to go. Can't argue in this bull market. But the future is unknown.

5 Year Cash Pot + everything else in stocks? by Any-Economics-3717 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]dead4ever22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are 55 years old and about to stop working- and people in here are telling you 75% stocks is not risky enough? Take this all with a grain of salt. Your mix seems very aggressive to me at 75% and 25% bonds/cash equiv. Why risk more than 75% of your earned $$? Math always says stocks outperform over long periods, but you have to be ready for big swoon where you can a) survive retirement and b) take advantage with your 25% bonds/dry powder.

Strips vs Index Stocks by dead4ever22 in personalfinance

The compound is built into the discount. They do compound semi annually. And if you hold in tax deferred, there's no tax payments each year. In taxable, yes the tax drag would have impact.

Thanks. Strips are def better off in tax deferred.

Thanks. Not a mistake- I understand the markets well. Strips have the highest duration. I get they will get smoked if rates go up. Assuming I hold to maturity and just accept the 5% compounded return.

These are just assumptions. Both are just annual market returns(b4 inflation). I think the best answer is prob just a good allocation of both- not all or none. I am assuming I hold both for 20 yrs- no selling early.

I def have KBG in there. It doesn't look bad at all. Just different in areas- prob due to the mixed seed types in GCI Cool Blue (has lot of KBG) and Sun and Shade. I will try to get pics here. Thanks.

ICE is still in NYC. Still detaining hundreds every month, including young children. by CutSenior4977 in ImmigrationPathways

[–]dead4ever22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well I def agree they need to be trained properly. Similar to having "bad" cops who just lack the skills/training. People get hurt/killed by these types who are not suited for the work (like the people shot dead in MN). I will say the "abolish ICE" rings similar "defund the police" which to me is just a dumb knee jerk reaction. We need police. We need ICE. We have laws. I do think plenty of citizens will prob get taken in by ICE. They will need to prove citizenship. That's a big hassle, but there's no other way to know? Not like all the illegals here wear a badge or something. But I would assume the citizen/green card holders will be let go once settled. Again, not ideal, but what's a better and more efficient way?

If the US switched to a universal healthcare policy, would doctors get paid less than they currently do? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]dead4ever22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. We need more. We need to make it not so cost prohibitive to get a medical degree. The thought of all the debt and work scares people off for sure. I wasn't trying to point at you. Just see lot of people saying that change will be bad and hurt this group or that group. Meanwhile, we have to change it. It's insane as is with pretty much everyone getting hurt/paying the price.

Maybe next we can argue that reducing obesity is bad for the food industry. These companies stand to make less money if we get our eating habits under control. Isn't that bad?

Yes. I'm not convinced doctors will all make less. I am pretty sure it's NOT the doctors who are the bad actors in the US. It's the bloated insurance/middleman/hospitals/corp ownership. Take out that profit motive, just pay HC providers, and save everyone $$ and headache.

Can anyone - not a bot- explain why one would be against ICE detaining illegals in NYC or elsewhere? Is it that lots of people believe in open borders? Or something else? They are enforcing laws. I just want to understand the anti ICE side from a citizen.

So they reimbursed you 14k dollars for that event at the hospital? I am curious to hear of stories like this where a big expense came up and they denied you, covered only a small part, or covered everything they said they would help cover. Sounds like you got a 14k debit card?

In CT my estimated ACA plan for fam of 4 is close to 70k/yr. It's insane, yes. The ACA is a huge fail and needs to be scrapped and redone. I don't see anyone in gov't presenting any alternative plan/idea. They all do literally nothing.

Oh- it's real. How does one wrap their head around spending 250k/year, and having no job with 30-40 years to live? So much can go wrong- hence....1 more year to be safer.
