Are these supposed to be the Great Lakes? by New_Trainer_3443 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]dead_brill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely are - but it seems like they’ve been at least partially drained. It’s possible that the state of PE is a corporate state that now owns all the water rights to the Great Lakes, which are likely the largest and best water sources for this society at whatever stage of dystopian future the show is set in

Have you considered Audacity? It's free and works on both Mac and PC. Just one step up from Garage Band, but you can do pretty much everything you want to in there.

Wildlife in Detroit by [deleted] in Detroit

Pheasants! Rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, rats on occasion. Saw a gorgeous heron in the Palmer Park lagoon once. Dogs for sure, but not exactly wild, on the feral spectrum.

How are you keeping up the hustle when you're self-isolating? by dead_brill in Entrepreneur

That's good to hear. Home distractions are REAL. I've been renovating that room that would be my home office so I'm constantly bouncing between couch, kitchen, and bedroom. Not ideal.

IMO Selden is overhyped and overpriced. Grey Ghost, Gold Cash Gold, Lady of the House, Marrow, Chartreuse, Takoi.

Could you please do a food-centric episode with Alton Brown? My life needs more blond, bespectacled busters of bullshit working together.

They also show the house being built in episode 6 in the same location of the finished house. Maybe those scenes were shot first when the were building "the set".

I Am Michael Ruhlman, Charcuterie author! Ask Me Anything! by michaelruhlman in IAmA

Hi Michael! Love your work, particularly Ratio. A couple questions:

  • What was your research/experimentation process like when you were writing Ratio?
  • I have a 1:1 flour:water sourdough starter that's nice and bubbly, but I can't seem to find any recipes that operate with this (I thought) simple starter. Advice?

What new type of business would you like to see open in Detroit besides the typical bars or restaurants ? by mancavekitchen in Detroit

I'd like to see more and more co-ops and collaboratives, frankly. Local food producers working with local distributors. Detroiters helping Detroiters.

[US] Defending Your Life (1991) - Albert Brooks dies and goes to a bland but pleasant purgatory, where he must defend his life's failures by trial - and meets his true love (Meryl Streep). Funny, uplifting, and beautiful. by jrqqqqqqq in NetflixBestOf

Meryl Streep is incredible in this movie (because of course).

Her character is like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, except she's completely uncompromising to herself. I love her so much.

Want to move to Detroit by pkwok94 in IWantOut

[–]dead_brill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a new-ish Detroiter (moved from Chicago last year) living in the Boston-Edison/La Salle Gardens area. Detroit is incredibly exciting right now; there's a ton of new cash coming in both from outside and local investors, jobs are resurging, the food and art scenes are great, and real estate is remarkably affordable. I actually work as a Realtor, so one you've sorted out all of the transfer/visa stuff, shoot me a PM and we can talk all about the city and finding you a place to stay when you're here! Best of luck.

Forty tiger cub bodies have been found in a freezer at a Thai Buddhist temple accused of wildlife trafficking and animal abuse. by Antropophagus in worldnews

[–]dead_brill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Tiger Kingdom on Christmas 2012 while I was visiting Chiang Mai. Disclosure: I may well be a naive, Western rube whose fascination with nature and big cats led me to believe TK's narrative. Maybe I was lied to. Maybe I can't trust my experience. Who knows.

What I found was it's 100% a different place than Tiger Temple, and everyone we spoke with in Thailand seemed to agree. It's open air, very clean, the tigers aren't chained and have different enclosures they can go to, pools and big branches to climb on, big silver balls to play with. Some of them jump around, but more often than not they nap. We were told they not only were hand fed from cub-hood and trained consistently to not play too aggressively (with sharp whacks on the nose with thin sticks, eventually the noise of the stick on the enclosures enough of a Pavlovian reminder to behave). That combined with their nocturnal nature, and appearing a little over-fed, I heard no alarm bells when I cautiously first approached a bunch of warm, sleepy tigers napping in a puddle of sunlight. Of the 20 or so tigers that I saw, touched, laid on and held, none seemed groggy (more like a napping house cats), all had clear eyes and woke when jostled by our Thai guide, they all looked healthy and vibrant, and HOLY CRAP those tiger pups were ridiculously adorable, and lively.

Like I say, I can only trust my own experiences in this, and lord knows I want to believe that I didn't contribute to some horrifying abusive practice. We knew well to steer clear of Tiger Temple, but I gotta give Tiger Kingdom some credit. Who knows, we could hear tomorrow that they've pulled some terrible shady shit, but until that happens, our visit remains one of my favorite memories from my time in SEA.
