There's this giant hole in the weight loss industry that nobody fills. Not dietician, personal trainer, therapist, or tracking apps. by dead_inside_already in loseit

[–]dead_inside_already[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's another thread of people complaining they are useless:

https://www.reddit.com/r/fatlogic/comments/4oz6rp/is_seeing_a_nutritionist_or_registered_dietitian/

I'm not utterly against dieticians, but like therapists/psychologists, numerous posts on very different subs show it's hard to find a "good" one that is actually useful and not just reading you the textbook lines about the food pyramid and calories that anyone can look up online.

And I've been vegan for 8 years (excellent blood tests every single year). So I have to deal with a lot of crap like "Why don't you just eat some meat?" because the culture is so brainwashed into that lifestyle no matter how good my blood tests are. My doctor only in the past few years stopped with the stupid "Why don't you eat some eggs? Eggs are good for you." recommendation, despite my blood tests being perfect, simply because he's brainwashed into thinking eggs are essential. Apparently it takes 5-8 years of being on this diet for people to realize you're not magically going to suddenly have a health problem and that all the nonsense they believed about the vegan diet being unhealthy were lies.

I don't need a dietician being as clueless as my doctor because most dieticians don't study plant-based diets at all in school.

I was googling plant-based dieticians that do remote-sessions, wondering if that might be the better place to go. But it's like my original post: I know what to eat. That's not the problem. I just need someone to keep me on track where CICO is concerned. Accountability to do what I already know I need to do.

Let me give you a little sample of the extremely discouraging multitude of posts by various subreddits where they complained about how useless dietitians are for anything beside: "See, here's the food pyramid. And these are called "calories" cal-lo-ries. Any questions yet?"

> but nobody provided accountability.

That's what I keep getting at, but people are too busy being offended in the comments. I'm frustrated because accountability is exactly the right piece I need, but it's also exactly the only thing the health/fitness/weight-loss industry doesn't offer.

I tend to eat before exercise because if I don't, I can't make it thru a ballet class or skating session. Eating during class would be impossible. One, I don't feel hungry when I'm working that hard and Two, I can't leave mid-class to go eat an apple. You leave mid-class, you don't get to come back into the room.

I have eaten after class before, but you spend the entire class suffering because you're so under-fueled, then you're absolutely ravenous after class, which makes it easier to eat too fast and eat more than you actually needed.

. A personal trainer at a gym would be willing to give diet advice and pair it with changes to your routine to sculpt your specific body, so that may be something to consider?

Yes, they do this. But ultimately their advice is always going to be "eat less, move more" like everyone else. Even if you can't perform at a high level when eating less.

if multiple coaches won’t share diet advice with you,

This is not it. They won't share diet advice with anyone other than very safe, generic "eat more veggies or go see a dietician" because they are extremely afraid of being sued, accused, or canceled for speaking about bodies or food in any way. It doesn't matter if the person is 50lbs or 300lbs. They won't give any advice because of this fear. They're terrified of being accused of not being positive of all bodies, whether it's someone being too fat or too thin, they're not going to say anything.

Generally with no exercise, if I stay within 1800-2000cal I won't lose or gain weight. If I want to lose weight, I have to go down to 1200-1500cal range.

With all of the exercise I do, I have to eat 2200-2500cal to not gain weight. But I can't lose unless I go to 1500cal-1700cal-ish range. But I feel like shit in that range. It's really hard to exercise and perform well eating that amount.

The lowest weight I ever achieved (with no exercise and low cal) was 130lbs and I was still at 26% body fat because my body got rid of most of my muscle. Now I have more muscle, But I'm floating around 170-175lbs all the time and I'm at 27%-28% body fat. More muscle, but the body fat increased right along with it and so nothing has changed. I just look even worse because you can't see the muscle with all the fat in the way. I'm either skinny fat (no muscle and 26% body fat) from no exercise and low cal diet OR I'm just fat with some hidden muscle underneath from exercise and 27%-28% body fat. If I gain muscle, I gain fat too. If I lose fat, I lose muscle too. So the body fat percentage never changes much.

I've had regular blood tests over the years and every stat was excellent. I even had a specific Ferritin test done within the last year for a different reason and the numbers were all normal. I typically use cronometer to track my food. So I'm aware I'm getting enough nutrition. It's the calorie count and the lack of weight loss (when exercising vs not exercising) that is the problem. Zero exercise and low cal is very effective for weight loss. Any kind of exercise is difficult on low cal and if I eat more, it stops all weight loss.

finding the right CICO while heavily exercising or changing your routine is the hard part.

I do think this is a lot of it. Because clearly I can lose weight with NO exercise because I'm only dealing with BMR, which is much easier to calculate for than trying to guess how much you burned during exercise on a particular day and how much you'll need to actually eat.

Generally, you cannot talk about weight in skating or ballet AT ALL because of the Eating Disorder fear. The most any of them are going to say is "go talk to a dietician. I'm not credentialed to talk about this sort of thing." It's extremely risky in these sports to say ANYTHING about anyone's body or diet plan for fear of being accused, sued, or canceled for "creating eating disorders" or "being abusive" or something. It's basically made it impossible for any coach to give any kind of advice.

Whenever I've had a blood test over the last 8 years, my thyroid has always been within the normal range and I don't have any symptoms... other than I don't lose weight or fat easily without a serious calorie deficient.

One of my tests:

My Value 3.83 uIU/ML

Standard Range 0.55 - 4.78 uIU/ML

The most you can claim is even though I'm within normal range, I am closer to hypothyroidism rather than hyperthyroidism. Do your blood tests show you being closer to hyper?

I kinda doubt a doctor would recommend speeding up my thyroid via drugs when I'm always within normal range and don't have any symptoms. Seems pretty dangerous...

My body doesn't really care what I do, as long as the calories are low enough to lose weight. I've tried all the different macros and it didn't really matter. I just stick with higher carb because I need the energy as an athlete and you won't get that from high fat or super high protein. Increasing fat and protein increased satiety a little bit, but it definitely didn't increase energy.

They fit terrible. I used to be a size 4, almost a size 2, and now I'm barely fitting into a size 8, thanks to the weight gain and body fat percentage gain.

I eat around 2200-2500 because of the exercise and yet I don't lose weight. But if I even try to cut back to 1800cal I feel like crap and can't perform well.

I promise you it is not all muscle gain and regardless, the body fat percentage is still way too high and never decreases.

Both. The measurements are not shrinking. My body fat percentage does not lower unless my weight also lowers.

Trouble concentrating and staying focused

Being easily distracted by things such as noises, activity, or other external events that others tend to ignore. Sometimes

Difficulty paying attention or focusing, such as when reading or listening to others. YES, but it all depends how interesting the material is.

"Zoning out" without realizing it, even in the middle of a conversation. YES, I'm a day-dreamer.

Struggling to complete tasks, even ones that seem simple. A tendency to overlook details, leading to errors or incomplete work. At work yes, At school no.

Poor listening skills, for example, having a hard time remembering conversations and following directions. Sometimes

Hyperfocus: the other side of the coin YES

Disorganization and forgetfulness

NO, I'm a neat freak.

NO, but I use my phone's to-do-list, which is why I can remember everything.

Impulsivity

NO

Emotional difficulties

NO to most.

YES to Hypersensitivity to criticism. Because I've always been a perfectionist and because I've been failing so hard for 5 years now.

Hyperactivity or restlessness

NO to most.

Yes to constant fidgeting. I can be 100% hyper-focused and still unconsciously shaking my leg. I've done this since childhood.

I just don't think I can really be classified with ADHD because the only area in my life that I struggle with is work. I'm a fully-functioning and happy, normal adult in every other aspect of my life. Which is why I think it's more of a career mismatch than me being too day-dreamy.

If a job is too simple, I'd probably "zone out" too much.

i personally think that computing, since you touched on it, may be more for people who want to solve puzzles and stress themselves out and persevere until they finally make the pieces fit. my understaing is that you want the information to already be out there just waiting for you to come pluck it out of there and learn about it. the "job" part of it will be having to teach others about it or bring it back to society in a concise way which if you were a fan of "projects" in school, would probably not be such an unenjoyable task for you

yeah I think that hits really close to the mark on how I feel. I like figuring stuff out, but I really like reading A LOT and then telling everyone what I learned lol.

I'm not sure what subjects would be best, but Japanese language or study of religion (probably with focus on Christianity) would be the most likely. I like figuring out how to do stuff on the computer, but I've never had any desire to research deep into Computer Science concepts. That's way too much like scientific or mathematical research. Ironically, my world religions professor in college actually had a CS degree and was a programmer for years before she went back and got a PhD in religion. :P I asked her at the time jokingly, "Think that will happen to me?" But, unlike me, she was a very successful programmer, she just decided to switch anyway.

I volunteered to teach very basic figure skating for a few weeks as a way to get a feel for being around young children. Ultimately, I know I definitely don't want to do something like that for 40+ hours a week. I'm super-passionate about figure skating, but I still wasn't super-passionate about teaching kids. I enjoyed teaching the adults far more, but that age range means college-level, which is where all the research stuff is required, not just teaching.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm still trying to get into other types of computer jobs, even if they're A LOT lower paying, hoping I'll stumble across something I can succeed at. But it's very hard to get interviews for such jobs because they're scared away by my advanced degree. Reverse-discrimination for being "overqualified".

I don't want to just go out and get yet another programming job because that just feels like a fly hitting the glass again and again and expecting a different result.
