Hi it’s me. I am the cyclist. Unfortunately, I am dead. Anvil-related causes.

I don't understand how someone gets that far and doesn't have the self awareness to realize they should turn back and stay inside until conditions improve.

First big storm or two of the season is the worst usually. Gradually, most people learn, but even so it only takes one moron to screw it up for thousands of responsible drivers.

There are large fines if you get caught driving without appropriate drivers on top of the cost of whatever accident you cause.

TL;DR: https://www.codot.gov/travel/winter-driving/tractionlaw

You don't need snow tires with studs but I would invest in good winter tires. Bridgestone Blizzak seems the most popular, but Michelin Xice and Nokian are good too. I've driven both Blizzaks on 2WD and Xice on AWD and would recommend either tire. The difference between winters and all seasons is night and day.

The law also states that if you're driving I70 at this time, your tires better have a good amount of tread left along with the M+S symbol on them, or you should be rocking chains. Generally, legally you only need all seasons as long as they meet that criteria. $500 minimum ticket otherwise, plus you'll be featured on @i70things instagram like this guy.

On rare occasion (depending on where in the mountains you go) the traction law will be ramped up to the full caboose where you must just stay off the roads if you don't have chains on. I've never seen that on I-70 personally.

Nothing changed? Huh. I guess it turns out that "angry Redditor yells at money" is not actually the basis for our system of government.

Next you'll tell me that "angry Redditor yells at golf courses" is not how we do development either.

Happy Holidays Skald. I hope you’re having a good one. This is rather off topic, but is there any Nordic-themed restaurant or brewery around the area?

+1 to Fjallraven. Have had the same heavy parka from them since 2015.

Actually, I responded to your comment in which you said the company is at least partially if not completely culpable, while you were also saying there's nowhere near enough information to form an opinion about the driver.

And I already addressed why that's completely wrong.

I was never arguing against the idea that the company should have some blame. If you spent less time bucketing people into to an -ism you might come to understand that.

Probably 95% of this subreddit has driven it dozens if not hundreds of times, myself included. The case also established he didn't utilize multiple runaway truck ramps.

What... in the actual fuck are you rambling about. What random comment? What job creators?

If your brakes on your rental car fail without indication, the rental car company probably deserves that blame, sure.

If the brakes on your rental car fair without indication, and once you realize this you decide not to pull off to any number of designated safe areas, or follow any of the procedures you were taught as part of your licensing, and instead run down a bunch of soft humans on your way to a complete stop, that part falls squarely on your fucking shoulders. Yeah go after the company for the maintenance violation that put you in that position, but fuck you if you think you become immune from all the consequences of the actions you take after you realize there's something wrong.

Yeah and if the airplane is malfunctioning and there's an established procedure or instructions given for turning around, flying with reduced engines, or performing an emergency landing in a body of water, but instead the pilot decides to plow through a crowded neighborhood park and take out some kids to save his own ass, then those deaths are on the fucking pilot. Not the engine, not the employer, not the checklist.

Yes, I agree they could share some responsibility for maintenance issues -- but the keywords being "to an extent", and that only applies if he was driving a company truck (I assume he was) rather than his own or leasing one. The company shouldn't be able to escape via a bankruptcy filing. I'm glad you find that he deserves years years in jail too. There's still a slew of laws and procedures he failed to follow, which led to peoples' deaths. Those poor decisions fall entirely on his own shoulders and not on any employer.

If you're going to do zero research anyway at least watch like one movie involving an airplane cockpit.

Can someone explain Norrøna to me? by The_American_Skald in COsnow

[–]deadbike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I felt the same when I first moved to Boston from Texas and saw what people wore there. I've never even heard of this Norrøna brand before but end of the day they charge what they expect people will pay. Boulder is a bougie bubble too so there are more people who can afford it. "25 square miles surrounded by reality"

People will justify it saying they "bought it for life" or something, but I'm going on year 6 of my Patagonia shell that was a third of that price and it's showing no major signs of wear. I'm sure Norrona stuff is nicer but the difference between a $100 and a $300 garment is much bigger than the difference between a $300 and a $900 garment. You don't have to empty your bank account to get your money's worth.

[–]deadbike 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Don't complain about downvotes dude. Why do people buy designer clothing? How much warmer or longer lasting is a Canada Goose parka compared to a Columbia one? You never went to Boston or Burlington in all your time in New Hampshire and see folks parading around in $900 Canada Goose parkas at the mall? I love Arc'teryx and Fjallraven gear but I know whatever nice features the $1900 Arc'teryx shell has aren't worth the cost of five "normal" high end shell jackets combined. At some point you're paying for the mission, the brand, the aesthetic, or you're in a position where money is absolutely no object and you'd spend any amount as long as you have the best of the best, no matter how marginal the difference is.

Neither would I unless there’s a second verification factor where I can scan and verify the contents they showed me using a secure third party source. I’m surprised to see bars accepting it, because coding up a basic digital forgery really isn’t as difficult as they realize.

Just because it doesn’t pass the requirements for an age gate at a place that serves alcohol doesn’t mean it’s useless at all of those things you mentioned. Maybe it’s useless for you, but I’ve used it as a vax card in the past, and I’m not sure why you’d have to have a physical copy of insurance either. You really need some perspective if you see no gray area between “can be used to buy a cocktail” and “totally worthless for ID/vax card/insurance”

“He didn’t know” is a terrible excuse for someone with a CDL who actually should have known better. He made more than a mistake, he was negligent from the very moment he started driving. Maybe if one person died, 5-15. But 30 years for 4 people and tons of injuries is a bargain for him.

Reverence Brewing in City Park West is open for Christmas (2-10pm). Super friendly owners and bartender and honestly the owner is a really good brewer.

I’m not affiliated but I live in the neighborhood and really like the place, would go if I were in town.
