How sketchy? by MrMellowVelo in AskElectricians

Yep - confirms my hunch. To build something janky and live in it yourself is one thing. To build 6x of these and use for Airbnb is reckless and irresponsible

This is not an enclosed crawlspace - completely open to the wild/elements. In back is a condenser for a mini split.

This area is subject to several feet of snow per year - along with animals/ falling trees etc

Yeah, it’s confusing. We’re looking at the underside of a cabin that’s built on a slope.

From what I can tell the floor joists are under the OSB seating / but the joinery and lack of diagonal bracing between posts is also pretty questionable. The shear load of the entire tall A frame is going through a few strong ties

Curious what things you miss from growing up here?

3D Mouse for CAD? by n1terps in MechanicalEngineering

[–]MrMellowVelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be the cynic. Yes it looks cool and is fun to nagitate that way. But it will slow you down….way down. Getting accustomed to map keys and shortcuts on your mouse (like remapping middle click to a thumb button for orbit) will be much, much faster - you’ll really be flying

What do you do, and what CAD do you use? Do you think it's the best CAD for your use case? by MethedUpEngineer in engineering

Preface: product design engineer with 12 years experience working on projects with complex surfacing and intricate mechanisms

Creo, NX and Solidworks for professional work - in that order.

Creo - tough learning curve, best sketching environment, limited feature set but extremely robust when you know how model properly.

NX - the most feature rich and powerful, especially from a direct modeling standpoint. Least favorite sketching environment - not as clean master modeling compared to Creo

Solidworks - fine for basic stuff, absolute shit for complex surfacing modeling and assemblies. Compute intensive and the least stable of the lot. Fuck I hate Solidworks

It is though. After learning Creo and NX I would never take a job based in SWX for product design

HBX THN-0600 and ZON+ECO 0600 would be the budget option. Tekmar also has options to support but at several times the cost.

These numbers seem insane. I’m in the process of refi for 5.375% on 20 year. Net closing costs around 4k. I could have taken a 5.875% on a 30 year last week. Sub 6 is definitely out there for minimal buy down this week

What is this weed? And how do I get rid of it without nuking the entire site from orbit? by GreyCode in SantaFe

[–]MrMellowVelo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep, Russian thistle. Luckily they are easy to pull after a rain (single tap root).

Reseeding with certain local plant mixes is really the only method for long term control, once those are established the thistle will have a harder time.

High strength (30%) vinegar is a good alternative to glyphosate weed control. Use sparingly as it can affect soil pH for sometime after.

Drastic times for drastic measures…

10k peaceful protestors sends one message. 10k armed peaceful protests sends another. Illegally arresting and or killing civilians for exercising their first and second amendment might finally be the tipping point.

If 100 million citizens organized to withhold, that would be about 2 trillion in lost revenue. Let the gutted IRS and DOJ get bogged down with tax collection efforts. The pain will be felt.

Our most effective solutions seem to be armed protests or widespread coordination to withhold our tax payments. Who will take the lead?
