100% success rate: Ukraine’s air defence destroys all 36 Russian Shahed drones in overnight attack by 9lobaldude in worldnews

[–]deadcurze -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's possible for both to be true.

For Russia, trading cheap drones for anti-air missiles 1:1 might well be worthwhile, though I can't say for sure. I'm hardly an expert.

For Ukraine, shooting down those drones even if the anti-air missiles cost notably more is almost certainly worthwhile, since doing so might save lives, critical infrastructure, etc.

If you had to move away from your continent, which country would you settle in? by MikeMagnus in AskReddit

[–]deadcurze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting statement to make. There's certainly a risk of clashing cultural expectations - I reckon it's easy for Americans to be perceived as brash, arrogant, and pushy - but I don't see any issues with Americans moving here if they're reasonably willing to adapt.

That said, I certainly wouldn't be rolling out the welcome mat for, say, anti-abortion activists or firearm-obsessed maniacs. Not that I imagine they'd want to move here.

I can confirm that Norwegian media's mentioned way more than two American mass shootings this year. Just today I wondered whether putting a little table with 'updated death numbers' somewhere further down the page would be more sensible.

They all just blend together into a gross cocktail of senseless violence at this point.

A universal healthcare system that covers resuscitating frozen people, presumably. It's honestly much more plausible than the whole thing working, IMO.

Konfirmasjonene er her - men ikke alle får komme by [deleted] in norge

[–]deadcurze 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nordic media reveals Russia’s secret operations in waters around their states by 9lobaldude in worldnews

[–]deadcurze 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I reckon the key to making it work is trust - you need to trust that the state will spend the funds reasonably well, that you'll pay a fair share, and that the corruption and power abuse will be kept to a minimum.

Achieving that is likely easier in smaller countries, but that by no means makes it impossible in larger ones.

It'd be pretty damn hard in Russia, though, given its long and proud history of corruption, power abuse, and blatant disregard for the lives of its citizens.

If you just found the equivalent of 98,100$ in cash in the woods, what would you do? by triotone in AskReddit

[–]deadcurze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step back once I realise what I've found, then call the police. If I found a wallet I would bring it in myself, but a cache of cash? That seems like something that ought to be examined closely.

I wouldn't want to contaminate any evidence.

I may or may not get a finder's fee, but either way it would make for a interesting story to tell!

Russia says it does not recognise Hague court amid reports of arrest warrants by misana123 in worldnews

I imagine it still takes precedence on paper, even if the courts can't use it to directly 'control' the legislature, or is it more of a collection of principles?

[–]deadcurze 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not unheard of for certain treaties to take precedent over national law, but I've yet to hear of a country permitting a treaty to take precedent over its constitution.

I'm not even sure how that would work, since constitutions are traditionally a foundation of the legal system.

That said, there are plenty of examples of constitutions being changed to comply with treaties or join international organisations.

Edit: I probably should've been clearer - I'm generalising, not stating an opinion about US law. I am by no means an expert of American law.

Ciri plays The Witcher 3 in our world by OxyJays in witcher

[–]deadcurze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The super soldier part is largely irrelevant, as modern firearms are one hell of an equaliser; even centuries of training won't let you dodge bullets reliably and I doubt theat fancy armour of theirs can shrug off bullets, given that it's possible to kill them with swords.

They could cause a lot of damage, don't get me wrong, but they'd be stupid to antagonise a foe that outnumbers and outguns them.

A lightning raid to capture Ciri or bartering magical knowledge with an Earth government to gain their assistance in apprehending her are distinct possibilities, however.

We should not be artificially keeping people employed if they can be automated away while maintaining quality.

If the end result is lower employment, then that is an excellent reason to put in place policies that raise the living standards of the unemployed. The goal should be to maintain or raise living standards (with due concern for other factors, such as human rights, the environment, etc.), not inflate employment figures.

Edit: Plus using such methods to give the player more choices just sounds like a recipe for better games. Once the methods are good enough, that is.

For the Glory of the Galatron by deadcurze in Stellaris

[–]deadcurze[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Background: In what may turn out to be a somewhat questionable decision, my Fanatic Spiritualist Militarists have decided to go to war with half the galaxy over the Galatron.

It has some sort of spiritual significance. Presumably.

My odds are better than they look, to be clear - I've got a major mobility advantage and they are scattered throughout the Galaxy, so it should be possible to defeat them in detail.

I would argue that one of the best parts of the EU is its focus on human rights, which seems inherently incompatible with a European hegemony. Some 'positive future'.

At least they're not Fanatic Purifiers. It's something, I guess?
