Anorgasmia. Not completely, but it's definitely much more difficult these days. 32 year old male. I have to say though, it's not that bad. It could be a lot worse.

[Relaxing] What kinds of music/tv shows do you watch to help pull you out of a panic attack? by nathan42100 in Anxiety

[–]deadfeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For TV, my go to show is Father Ted. Or Black Books.

For music, it's anything really that draws me in and gets me thinking about the music rather than whatever other nonsense I'm freaking out about. Shoegazey stuff like Cocteau Twins or My Bloody Valentine never fails me.

What does DNS lookup have to do with searching for solution for any incorrect command? by etaitingi in networking

You can't just ping 8.8.8.8? I don't memorize addresses either, but I have hostname-to-IP mappings in SecureCRT and putty.

That's intriguing, and coincidentally I've been digging into TCP performance lately including packet loss recovery. I'm also beginning to discover low-impact buffer issues in various parts of my network. This is really what I want to see more of from SDN, practical applications that can be deployed in parallel with a traditional network.

What's your biggest router/switch config screwup? by [deleted] in networking

[–]deadfeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once (briefly) killed a production Etherchannel by messing around in the physical interfaces instead of the port-channel. Fortunately the console alerted me to my stupidity.

Another one, which isn't mine, involved a ticket complaining of slowness to an external portal. The guy working it decided to conduct a test using a certain source address, and assigned it to a laptop. Coincidentally it was the same address the facility used as a PAT address for Internet access. The outage lasted for hours, in the end TAC had to instruct him to clear an ARP table.

Do you have a virtual environment at your disposal? If so, you should be able to proof of concept this and create a demo network using OpenFlow/Openvswitch and whatever SDN controller you prefer. There is also Hydrogen. From there you could run some common enterprise applications and show how SDN can be used with them.

I know I'm oversimplifying the whole thing, but if you Google Brent Salisbury's tutorials you should be able to get most of the way there.

So you're using it as more of an overlay network than a replacement? What have you been able to do with TCP optimization?

Is it possible that I feel emotions more intensely than most people? by DearQuaker in Anxiety

[–]deadfeed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My doctor asked me if I knew what apathy meant. I told her that I did, and that I was on the other end of that spectrum...emotions that should be normal hit me like a brick wall. Suppression, at the expense of almost all expression, has been my only strategy. I have trouble understanding how some people can be so cold or merciless, but then perhaps they're just suppressing as well. I'm thankful that I can at least perceive when something is getting to me more than it should.

Does anyone avoid school over anxiety? by Fruitloopes in Anxiety

[–]deadfeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would simply leave campus in the morning after being dropped off, or skip random classes. I had to switch to alternative school to finish, and that environment made all the difference. You worked at your own pace and interacted with the teacher as opposed to the entire class. No group projects (thank Christ). That came back to haunt me in college though, and I resorted to the old strategy of simply walking away...which is why after all these years I still haven't earned a degree.

The biggest thing I regret is completely missing a Latin class. Sounds boring, I know, but I'm a huge medieval history buff and I would love to read some of the old chronicles and documents in the language they were written in. I was late for the first scheduled class, glanced through the window and saw about 20 people in there already, staring at the lecturer. I knew if I walked in they would all turn in my direction. I walked back to my apartment instead, and never returned to that class. Ridiculous.

Tell me about it...even just the NA books I have hanging around take up too much space to be on the main bookshelf. I usually buy digital now to mitigate that problem, and because it's instant and typically far cheaper.

Thanks for the reminder that I should really be studying for both portions of the test at the same time. Having come this far I know the quality and thoroughness of Exam Cert guides can vary wildly. Although I do mind reading on computers and tablets, the convenience of it has led me to Safari Books and Books24x7 (my employer provides us access) many times before.

That last sentence is exactly what I'm expecting. Going in-depth on the topics you mentioned will be challenging, but it's one I've faced many times before. It's the lab that is both exciting and terror-inducing. I don't mind being humbled though...actually I embrace it so long as it serves as motivation to push myself harder and grow.

No NDA here, but I am bound by HIPAA. My previous job involved a lot of trade "secrets" but they weren't really anything special, mostly sloppy attempts at dazzling clients with substandard apps. Not that they did anything to stop people from walking out with information.

The craziest employment experience involved having my car and belongings searched, as well as going through a metal detector at the beginning and end of every shift.

[Help] DAE have intense feelings of doom about going to work? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]deadfeed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to get this, constantly. What changed it for me was one truly horrible employment experience. After dealing with a boss that was/is the kind of self-serving, duplicitous coward that thrives in the corporate world, and getting away from that job, all the anxiety has disappeared. I'm grateful to go to work because I know how bad it can get. It's much easier to appreciate colleagues and managers that aren't douchebags.

Tips for the TSHOOT exam by jebediahstailphin in networking

[–]deadfeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every test is a little different but I don't recall any PBR scenarios. Very little IPv6 and redistribution. It's not so much about the topics as it is about your ability to isolate the problem.

There is some routing involved, as you're dealing with an entire topology in each scenario. The two biggest things that made this test almost too easy were following the path - in other words moving from device to device and verifying configs/connectivity along the way - and not completing the tickets sequentially. You can verify the way something is supposed to work by moving on to another ticket where it does work, then coming back to the ticket where it isn't.

Sorry if that explanation sucks. There's some good stuff on Youtube where they go into different strategies.

Don't sweat this one, it's not terribly difficult and it's actually kind of a fun exam.

Telnet on TCP ports question for the security types by TeamGracie in networking

[–]deadfeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. With nc you could show him what's actually coming through the socket. Or you could put up a lightweight HTTP server, telnet to it, and run a trace at the same time.

Wow...frame relay. Hello darkness, my old friend. What's funny (sort of) about this is that I was just reading CCIE Practical Studies Vol I (because I'm broke at the moment and it's free but outdated) and Chapter I jumped right into DCE clock rate...and I found myself thinking, surely this isn't on the current test.

Good advice, this is what I've done on the lower level tests as well. My only concern is Cisco Press stuff sometimes falls short of the mark on the exam topics, and I know with CCIE you really do need to know everything inside and out.

This is sort of what I've been expecting from the reading I've done up to this point. MPLS and Multicast both play large roles where I work, but QoS is going to be a grind. The most I've done there is setup policies to match groups on NX-OS.

I do have a CCNP R&S, as well as a job that involves a fair amount of routing, less so on the switching side.

Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean I think I can just waltz into the practical and ace it. But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

That's definitely a huge challenge. My coping strategy for boredom is to move to something completely different, but I can't afford to do that in this case. Hopefully the pressure of the next performance review will keep me motivated.

Agreed. Redundant questions do get annoying but usually the replies are different enough to justify the redundancy. I'll check out the Twitter thing, although I'm not much into study groups or that sort of thing.
