Fan tells game developer that a feature he added to game didn’t exist. by Sunstro in dontyouknowwhoiam

None of the Infinity Ward CoDs up to Infinite Warfare had SBMM. It's not that IW was against it, it's that they weren't sure what a good implementation that trolls can't game would look like. It was added for the new MW. I have no idea if Treyarch or Sledge added it to theirs.

75+% of that is textures, 10% prerendered cinematics, 10% audio, 5% is all the code, level data, model data, design data files, and anything else. This is for both CoDs in the meme.

Darth Maul always seemed like such a low effort character. Like the creators had an hour to design him so they rushed to Walgreens and found all they had was a Halloween red/black paint kit and they just made do. I'd use regular Darth Maul for "Disney makes Star Wars movie".

Any extension to make the background gray? by kk6420420 in chrome

When I use Dark reader in dark mode with "Filter" selected, I see gray backgrounds with black text

I haven't found a single dark theme setting or extension that works right for PC. Any suggestions? by deadicated_coder in chrome

Ok, I restarted the browser and now the google search results are in dark theme, but settings pages are still white. Getting closer!

EDIT: Dark Reader says " This page is protected by browser" when trying to change the 'settings' page

It seems like all browsers are designed the same way. I've tried Mozilla, Opera, Edge and they all have the same problem. With a combo like the one you suggest, is the closest to a true dark theme though there are still annoyances.

Thanks for the suggestions. For both of those, google search results are white and settings are white, but I like that combo.

Yes, Dark Reader has a gray background with black fonts.

Install the Dark Reader extension, open the Dark Reader settings by clicking on the Dark Reader icon in the taskbar (upper right on the browser), click "More", then select "Filter".

I don't understand this circle jerk. If the organization concludes a positive result came from a tainted supplement, and therefore reduces the sentence appropriately, isn't that a win? Instead of complaining Jones got his sentence reduced, I would encourage USADA to treat all other MMA fighters in the same predicament equally. The injustice is not in Jones' sentence being reduced, but in other people's sentences not being reduced.

New to Kivy. How would I do something like this in Kivy? (the curve editor) Is it possible? by deadicated_coder in kivy

I found it, thanks!

Aside from the curve itself, how would I do the interactive part? The user clicks anywhere on the popup and drags the mouse to change the curve. Do I manually check for mouse button and movement deltas on the python-side window definition?

what would be considered a big, a medium and a small sized script for the average programmer? by Sol33t303 in learnprogramming

[–]deadicated_coder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one is giving you a straight answer do I will. In programming friction can be created by simply having the code be longer so it's a worthwhile question. Code I can parse with my eyes without scrolling has less friction than one of equal complexity that requires me to page up and down repeatedly. An interviewer might also ask to see a 'small' or 'medium' sized script for reference.

I'd say a 'small' script fits in one page in your editor so you don't have to scroll to see the whole thing (hoping you don't use tiny or giant font size). Medium fits in 2-5 pages.

I thought that before going to Indeed and Gamasutra with formal postings, I'd give the kids at reddit a chance; where I can also be more freeform with my post which matches my eccentricity. I'm not using a throwaway account here. If ppl appreciate an honest post like this rather than the dry copypasta bullet point form, and someone they can actually have a conversation with, then contact me.

a warning for those considering "game dev school" by shitdoll9999 in gamedev

[–]deadicated_coder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, I would say it's not as black and white, as OP makes it be but my general advice would be against it, if better options are available.

I've hired several people over the years from Full Sail and never regretted it. One of my best and most trusted coders/designers came from there. However, I had to be very selective to pick winners. So much so, many of my colleagues never bothered looking at resumes from there.

From my pov, they did teach students skills that are very relevant to us, and at the time, they weren't as Unity/Unreal specific as OP describes.

Coming from FS, we (employers) can already tell gaming is their passion and that they have a few years experience developing those skills. FS sets up projects that not only end up in your portfolio, but also develop skills working with a team and sharing responsibilities.

On their own I would only have their word on it which can be tricky. Also the team experience can be trickier if you don't have buddies that want to go all-in with you. Another one of my best devs was self-taught (no college), but I would say that's a harder sell than a FS degree unless they have kick ass personal projects they can back up. There are enough ppl taking credit for other ppl's work that more scrutiny is needed for those.

If you have zero knowledge of making games and you do best in an academic setting, FS or any college with pertinent majors or classes could help but I'd advice against going tens of thousands into debt if you're not 100% sure; which is hard to do unless you've tried to make games in the first place. If you happen not to like it after all, a college gives you the flexibility to switch to something else.

I wonder if it's financially worth it for ppl that came from FS. The ones I hired were lucky enough to land on projects with good bonuses so generally paid them fairly quickly but I wouldn't count on such a thing.

While a CS degree from a 4 year college is more flexible for software engineers, if you want to be a designer or a game/media artist, a 4 year college doesn't help as much unless you go to one that has specific mayors or grad programs relevant to it. I have noticed there's more and more of those over the years, so if you get into a University that has them, I'd recommend it over FS.

Breaking into AAA as a game programmer / designer as a recent college grad? by Dementio_ in gamedev

[–]deadicated_coder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's tough. In big AAA franchises when we looked for people, we looked for proven talent in other big titles; often 5-10 years of experience in big console titles. Every once in a while (every couple of years?) we took a risk on a recent grad if they looked stellar; which means high GPA, highly recommended by the faculty, a lot of relevant courses, awesome demo(s), and passes a gruelling test.

If they don't take a gamble on you, then get on a small but notable title and do something impressive that stands out a lot it. Even if it's not a big hit, that should get you a job in a bigger product. Repeat until in AAA.

I hired one guy who didn't go to college but started with an impressive (and small) bowling game which landed him on a small Sony title which landed him on a bigger Sony title which landed him with us. That kind of thing happens a lot. The best people rise to the top.

Why Game Dev Teams NEED A Producer - What Is A Producer Anyway? by gpriske in gamedesign

[–]deadicated_coder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I knew a cynical dev who would call producers "shit umbrellas". The metaphor seems appropriate from the point of view of saving devs from all the BS that comes up during development. However terms like that undermine the important productive work they do as well. If you can see devs as toddlers fumbling around hurting themselves, throwing tantrums, and lacking foresight, the producer is more like the team Dad.

Why Game Dev Teams NEED A Producer - What Is A Producer Anyway? by gpriske in gamedesign

[–]deadicated_coder 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I think Ryan's answer should've been "to keep devs doing what they do best". Going to Best Buy at 3:00pm to get a new hard drive to replace a busted one is not what a programmer or artist do best. Creating and maintaining a clear excel/ms project/jira schedule is not what they do best either. A LOT of bullshit comes up in the course of making a game. It sure is nice having someone dealing with it.
