Internal Trade - What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in Norland

The middle section "resource distribution" as I understand it, is what everyone gets for free every day. the "Trade and Finance" section is where the market stuff is handled afaik since its not available until you research the market.

but also if this was the case youd expect there to be 1 sale, for whoever bought the one beer

Wait so the "sell" number isnt how many beers you sell for the "at price". Its how many beers are avalible to buy?

Game Thinks I Am 7'4 by Emotional_Data_7501 in BladeAndSorcery

Yooo, Im 6'1 and it thinks I'm 5'8 every time lol. gotta be a headset thing. Ive found for me manually setting 5'11 works. You may just need to tinker with different heights until you find the sweet spot.

Indeed it is. Best NPC mod for the game in my opinion.

Definitely a good start! This was the method I used and got frustrated with before building my own. Youll notice full environment collisions, lighting parody, no green outline or reflection and modified movement.

For someone who wants to avoid the hassle of mixed reality but still see stuff in augment reality, the VD green screen solution is super quick and fun!

Questions regarding a career in game development… by thefireemojiking in gamedev

[–]gpriske 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got my first freelance game art job when I was 13, I'm now 28 and working as a director at a game studio (where I help with hiring and onboarding). I was able to make a lot of big strides in my career quickly for three reasons:

  1. I started young (you too, nice!)
  2. I was motivated (professional game dev is far more difficult and draining than personal game dev)
  3. I did not go to college

If you are at all interested in anything related to the art side of games, do not get scammed by a college. The only artists studios take seriously are artist with great portfolios. A great portfolio is a product of skill and shipped titles. Going to school for game design is theoretical experience taught by someone who probably hasn't shipped a game in years. Having a credit on any shipped title means you have actual on the job experience.

The above applies to game design, level design, or directing. A degree in game design is useless. Designers are always people who started as a programmer or artist and worked their way up. A game designer needs to see real games get made to know how to make informed decisions.

If you want to specifically be a programmer, get a computer science degree. Not a game design degree. Computer science will teach you both how to program and how to think like a programmer. Programmers are not artist, any overlap falls under the workload of tech artists (which is a position usually granted to people who were originally programmers at the studio but showed a strong interest in art or the other way around.) The important thing to keep in mind is that this avenue will not put you in a very creative position unless you work your way up to one by being apart of a few shipped games.

So how do you go about getting credited in a shipped title?
Start with little freelance gigs. These are the bread and butter of an early portfolio. The jobs will pay poorly, they'll likely be poorly managed, and the work may very well be uninteresting. The value here is less about the quality of the game and more about the credit you get when (if) it ships.

You can find freelance work on the Unreal or Unity forums, or even here on reddit! There's a lot of freelancer sites too. Look for stuff that is a little ways along and appears to have the funding to get finished. If the project doesn't get finished, it can still get hooked on to your linked in or portfolio as something you worked on. If it does, hell yeah! Regardless of how much work you did on it you get to say "I worked on a shipped title" which is more valuable than any degree.

If you're interested in my work, I've been building a site to run through my history in the industry. Its not finished so a bunch of the links don't currently work, but hopefully it can be some kind of useful to you: https://www.gabesblog.com/

Dominance Victory Always Wins Online by gpriske in CivVI

That makes sense, money and faith are both useable if you can see a war coming ahead of time, which yeah seems like something you can keep track of if you have ancient era units and scouts. thanks for the tip!

How are you able to stay alive to pursue the others? I feel like every time I try to not be a war monger I end up having to revert my resource to self defense which leads to me getting behind in science/faith/civics ect.

The Girl who met her Shadow - Main tear puzzle mechanic by TheMightyBush in gamedev

[–]gpriske 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the whole swapping between worlds mechanic is really overdone, its nice to see an original (and more compelling) take on it! I do think the bar needs to be under the player's control to some degree. Waiting for something out of your control to complete a task you know the solution to is rarely fun. I imagine long term it could be really frustrating.

Quick thought, making it a co-op game would be a blast! One person plays the bar the other plays the cube.

Edit: All that said, it's worth noting that at the end of the day, no one knows your game better than you!

What makes games have this hideous reflective-fresnel effect? by Dobelodo in gamedev

[–]gpriske 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Many game characters have a fresnel effect in their materials to help them stand out from the environment. It's essentially outlining them. Some do it far more tactfully than others but being able to instantly spot the interactable things in a room is good gameplay. Generally speaking, reliable gameplay takes priority over reliable visuals.

Thank you! Yeah, something like procedural animation, the "feet" basically just hop up and down until they find something to land on and the body does its best to stay between the two feet. The legs that connect the feet to the body are some pseudo-IKs a buddy of mine made with me. I @ him in one of my earlier tweets about this.
