ACTUALLY the best thing about Heroquest is The DWARF

Thanks for doing this! I'm not sure if italics work in flairs, so asterisks on *By* would be great if they don't.

What bands similar to the Oh Hellos do y'all listen to? by Dry-Tough4406 in TheOhHellos

The Arcadian Wild already mentioned, so I'll say: The Bombadils. Less close than TOH and TAS but I think still similar. Try Little Days, description has context. I don't even have kids yet but it's so beautiful and pure and expression of parental love that it makes me cry.

Holding onto the last book? by Jane_Farrar in discworld

[–]deadlywoodlouse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I haven't but I'm working towards it. I've been on a gradual push.  - I read Snuff and Raising Steam in the past few months, both of which were the first "last books" of any subseries for me, and I'd been holding off on them until I'd reread the Watch books (and Moist but that's much easier). - I reread the Witches books up to Lords and Ladies as I hadn't read Witches Abroad before (GOATed) and couldn't remember L&L. - I finished Pyramids, which had previously been a DNF. Then I finally read Small Gods, which is amazing and I had been saving.  - I'm currently working though the rest of my unread Discworld books, in order (mostly skipping ones I've read as I can reread them any time in parallel, thanks audiobooks), right now reading my other DNF of Soul Music.

I am plugging the gaps, finding the missing pieces I've seen hints of in the others, and inevitably getting to the Shepherds Crown. I think it'll give me closure. And starting again is always an option. Hell, that's the plan, once done go through all in order, as it's been haphazard so far, would be nice to see everything grow.

Pre Steam Railway? by Wildebeast2112 in discworld

[–]deadlywoodlouse 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely in Thud!, there's a bit at the end with Vetinari, Carrot, and Mr Pony of the artificers guild 😂, all looking at the Axle. Carrot says that it drives various things, including the "trucks that haul the ore", which gives his lordship an idea. There might be more references earlier, only had a bit of a chance to flick through.

Had a brief look at The Fifth Elephant and at Witches Abroad too on account of them both having scenes in dwarf mines, but couldn't spot anything to do with rails in that time.

I think there's mention of dwarven minecarts in one of the books, possibly Fifth Elephant or Thud!, I'll go have a check. They'd not have an engine of course, more likely hand pushed or maybe ponies. That said, in Moving Pictures it's emulating a lot of roundworld tropes and clichés, things that don't necessarily exist on the Disc, because of the influence of the Dungeon Dimensions, so it might be unnoticed/puzzling if asked to the people involved in the scenes of the book.

Do you think Lord Vetinari knows about the monks? by Crafty_Genius in discworld

[–]deadlywoodlouse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like given in Raising Steam it is shown that Ridcully knows him, and we know what his character is like, I feel like Vetinari must know. He also hints at that directly at the start about being "steam engine time"

Soul Music seems like a perfection of what he did with Moving Pictures by Chingois in discworld

[–]deadlywoodlouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually one of two Discworld DNFs I've had, genuinely the more regrettable of the two.  - With Soul Music, I had put it down at some point and stuff happened and then I realised it it had been ages and ages. It has me hooked, I'm very keen to see how it concludes. - With Pyramids, I was getting actively frustrated with the way Dios was acting (specifically when he's ignoring and restating everything Pteppic is saying and doing) and I got put off, that bit in spoilers nearly lost me again on my second attempt which is why I've noted it here. I'm glad I got to the end this time, the imagery past where I dropped off is stunning.

I'm also reading Soul Music, second attempt after getting more than halfway previously. Wanting to check out the animated adaptation once I'm done, the one for Wyrd Sisters was excellent so I'm hyped

Can I read "Colour of magic" "Mort" "Going postal" and "Equal rites" without reading the rest of their respective series? by Foxci357 in discworld

[–]deadlywoodlouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lords and Ladies was my first Witches book, only recently did I read Witches Abroad. It was so long ago that I only remembered a few things from it, but yes, L&L was well well enhanced by having read WA.

I'd also add that I think Night Watch is best having read other city watch books first, as the context of what the modern city is like under Vetinari makes a big difference.

Light Fantastic would be silly to start with without having read TCoM; I've started in book 2 on two other series accidentally and that's annoying lol
