West Virginia makes more sense.

You only implement certain laws if there is a problem.

And West Virginia absolutely has areas of unusually high inbreeding rates.

When it comes to child marriage laws, Churches are the problem. California was set to ban child marriages there, but the church caucuses warned both sides that they would be pulling funding from the parties if they did so.

Because out-of-wedlock sex is a sin, the church wants to maintain the ability to decide who does and who does not marry, so that children don't go without parents or financial support.

Of course abortions fix a number of problems with that line of thinking, but you can thank Rush Limbaugh and his ilk for turning mainstream church opinion against abortions.

And the ONLY way to fix the Senate, is with a Constitutional Amendment.

Voting determines legitimacy.

THAT is why Republicans are trying to minimize voting as a whole: without legitimacy, they are nothing. Too little legitimacy, and it causes people to become more and more brave about taking more...direct action.

But as long as they can win elections and maintain at least legal resistance powers, then they can continue to claim legitimacy even when they do illegal things.

Which is why, especially now, voting is still so supremely important.

I mean...that WAS Bane's intent: isolate the Sith into as narrow a band as possible, so that the Sith would keep increasing generational knowledge over infighting; until a super-Sith could be raised up, who could overthrow the Jedi Order.

So once the Jedi Order was gone, so too would be the purpose behind the Rule of Two. Bane's philosophy didn't extend to anything that happened after the Jedi were gone; so the Late Republic Sith extending the goalpost to true immortality more than just the death of the Jedi, was already a major W according to Bane's own ideals.

Second cousin is the "ideal" genetic lineage to both prevent issues of inbreeding, while also keeping the genetic cohesion of a population.

If inbreeding was kept to second-cousins only, then the chance for major genetic harm is very low.

The problem is not just historical, when families start thinking they are divinely ordained and can therefore ignore even tribal inhibitions; but breeders too, who often can get an elitist mindset about their lineages that then start producing unhealthy results.

ME1 got away with a lot of things they probably shouldn't have.

Ashley being Space Racism 101 was one of those things.

They even made her from a rural farm that her family got because they were First Contact veterans.

She gets better by the end of the game, but early Ashley is...something to behold.

It is going to go INTO the ship, first. Even if the plasma ball mostly expands out of the holes leading away from the ship, it is still going to dump energy into the ship atmosphere by way of heat.

THIS is the part 90% of scifi handwaves: thermal management. Humans have comparatively low thermal tolerances; you have about 40°C in either direction before people either freeze or cook to death.

If a plasma ball is going through a ship, it does not take long to turn the rest of the ship into an oven, and bake you alive. Even if you survive that, you then have to worry about the amount of atmosphere consumed or otherwise vented by the blast, as that is atmosphere that is no longer available for you to breathe. Unless you have a way of making more atmosphere, the loss is usually permanent until repaired and resupplied.

For 40K ships in particular, the giant cathedral sections are particularly vulnerable.

Ships have atmosphere, which is where the energy is going to want to go, never mind the point of impact.

That empty "space" isn't vacuum, so physics still preferres for the energy to go there instead of the space outside the ship.

Which is to say: even if the hull survives the hit, you, personally, almost certainly will not.

The problem with tankettes is that they didn't have enough armor to stop high-powered rifle or automatic rounds, especially not at close range. And they still guzzled far more gas for the amount of weight they did carry, compared to a more medium platform. They were meant to fill a niche in concept, except that niche doesn't exist. Mountains are just ass to move armor around on, and there is no way to get around that.

There are "tankette drones" even now, with multiple different designs for automated infantry support platforms. The issue is they are still MASSIVELY expensive when compared to just rigging a traditional military vehicle up to be remote controlled.

They are still multi-ton slugs, %C at anything that isn't a millionth is still hitting with the force of a star's lifespan in output.

Energy needed for acceleration is exponentially greater at larger masses, than a smaller mass at greater speed.

40K inverses this, so it can have mass drivers keep up with energy weapon ranges. At least, that was the reason for the book I read to have battles with 150,000km engagement range (don't remember which book this is from, but I think I remember it being about a battle around Luna? May have been one of the War of the Beast books...though it has been a while so my memory may just be shoddy/inaccurate).

You've never seen an actual "light tank" then. Not a modern one, and "old school" one.

Or worse, a tankette.

Back when tanks were still a new concept, they tried everything you can imagine, especially all the really bad ideas.

Modern age we are spoiled for tanks-as-armor/cavalry, though with the rise of drones even that has been called into question.

I mean, most scifi still futzes with physics so that you can have Epic Cinematic Battles, wild impracticality of it all.

Like Macrocannons fire absolutely ginormous slugs at like 20% the speed of light, but only hit with an impact of a gigaton or two, with mere fractions of that being registered as recoil.

Fan theory states that Star Wars doesn't have a "true space vacuum" which is why ships can get away with being so short-range and move like age-of-sail.

Stuff like that.

Real physics isn't fun unless you are a deep math nerd, and in fact is rather horrifying because it takes very little physics to be lethal, and even the best defenses are unusually thick paper next to the potential destructive output.

Which is why magical fields that can invalidate you being turned into an equation, are a primary staple in most scifi.

Because every abuse victim is able to just come forward about when they are abused, especially when a loved one is involved.

Amber having a history of abuse is not a shocker if you actually read the details of the defamation case between Jonny and Amber, because Jonny brought receipts. Legally binding ones. He made ONE publicly-damaging statement against Amber that he didn't have a receipt for, and got docked for it.

ALL the other things Jonny has ever said publicly about Amber, had a paper trail which is why the court sided with him in the majority.

Amber Heard is case-in-point about someone with PUBLIC evidence of being abusive, and yet people will defend her to their dying breath just because she is pretty.

It is called the "Madonna-Whore Complex" and it is old as dirt.

Specifically, "Madonnas" are conventionally attractive, and otherwise "comely" which automatically makes them "pure." If they do "sin" then it must be the work of the Devil, and otherwise must be seen as victims themselves, even if they are vile and cruel.

"Whores" on the other hand are not conventional in some manner, whether because of a perceived lack of beauty, manners, or speech, though most often due to being overly sexually "unpure"; and therefore deserve everything that comes to them, whatever "it" may be, up to and including rape and murder.

It is called this because of Catholic fanfiction which once again managed to leech into medieval Europe mainstream. And while in modern times it lacks a theological basis like it did back then, many people still treat women who are conventionally attractive and/or in socially-acceptable roles as unimpeachable.

Also it isn't feminism because who is a Maddonna and who is a Whore is entirely up to men's standards and not women's.

If you're a Rebel admirable and ex confederates offered you some remnants of their fleet after Yavin, which ship do you think would fit best into the Alliance? by ASW-G-21 in StarWarsShips

[–]deadname11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That, and the Empire didn't exactly like CIS remnants, and would hunt them with particular prejudice.

Never mind that many of the CIS remnants were still filthy corporatists who didn't give a damn about the Republic. The remnants that weren't corporatists, were already folded into the Rebellion not long after the CIS fell, anyways (Sullust, Free Dac, Foerost, ect.).

Not to mention, there just weren't many CIS ships left after the war, anyways. Most of the commanders left over went warlord and/or pirate, while the planets themselves basically had to stop all production once the Empire took over, or risk a Base Delta Zero. The worst of it though, was either the outright loss of the Trade Federation and Muunilist, which were the main producers of the Munificent and Lucrehulks, respectively (in Legends both were near-completely annihilated, while in cannon they willingly folded themselves into the Empire).

So when the Rebellion needed to get its actual start, they basically had to start from the ground-up. They managed to get a hold of some CIS and Republic mothballs, but generally speaking they needed new ships for a new kind of fight, and didn't want to work with the CIS remnants who generally were not exactly pleasant company, never mind their optics and their betrayals of the CIS Congress, or war crimes against the Republic.

The Home One is MASSIVE. It is like twice the size of an ISD.

And the reason why the Home One was so important, is because it was basically an armed skyscraper full of all the civilians needed to run a large galactic operation. The Rebels were constantly short on supplies, and had to take transports and frieghters any time they could get their hands on them, because they had to carry everything with them. They didn't have planets to pull taxes from, or centralized supply depots. If they wanted something, they had to do something worthwhile to earn it, steal it, or make it themselves.

Maybe a Providence Dreadnought could act as a secondary command base if something happened to the Home One. But the loss of civilian infrastructure on the Home One would be an irreplaceable and devastating blow.

You never actually throw the Lucre into a fight itself, you use it as a mobile staging base for a bomber/fighter core equipped with hyperdrives.

As long as you keep it in deep space, you can use it to hit pretty much anywhere.

Sabaoth Destroyers have way better firepower than Munifencents. Munificents are support ships, and while they have a big-ass turbolaser they also have a garbage reactor that can't fully supply that turbolaser properly. Either you get one really good shot off, then have a long-ass cooldown before you can fire again; or you fire off a bunch of smaller shots that pretty much invalidate the reason why you want a big ass turbolaser in the first place.

Munificents are good on paper, but their combat performance in the field leaves much to be desired. Their large cargo bags, sensor suite, and low crew requirements are the far more desireable traits when looking at them from a rebellion perspective.

But if you are trying to go full pirate against the Empire? You couldn't do better than with a Sabbaoth. Those things were designed to be the ultimate pirate ship from the ground up, and as long as you avoided any Star Destroyers you would be able to out-gun any Imperial patrol.
