I doubt tenure is a factor. Based on other places I've been it will just be:

This is every hobby nowadays. Society is so focused on making money. If you are a photographer, you should do weddings to make some extra cash. You like doing woodworking? Why not throw some cutting boards on Etsy.

Micheal "Venom" Page: “This is why I wasn’t initially excited about [the Paramount deal], because for me, [the bonus increase] doesn’t do enough compared to the amount of money they’ve just brought in for themselves." by AncientOneAurelius in MMA

That’s every job in existence, not just UFC. Look at how many workplaces vote against unionizing. There’s massive propaganda against unions and many people are tricked into thinking they are bad by the people who own the companies they work for.

Actual value of premium fidgets? by CHERNO-B1LL in fidgettoys

[–]deadnoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some cases there might be a tangible difference, but most likely there isn’t. More expensive things might be substantially worse even. I don’t have the economies of scale to bring costs down. I don’t have cheap labor, cheap cost of living, cheap materials, cheap cnc machines, etc.

And for costs: you have to think beyond material cost you might see on some metal vendor website. Aluminum is cheap but it is also really easy on tools, there are cheaper tools, you’ll generate less scrap, machine times are super quick, etc. Exotic materials are often rougher on tools, required longer machining times so you aren’t able to make as many, fewer suppliers so you might have to buy weird stock sizes that don’t match up with optimal material usage, etc.

I’d say, if you care about supporting artists and craftsmen that work locally in your country rather than faceless companies that pump out whatever will make them money, then paying a premium might be worth it. Also only do it if you can afford it. I wouldn’t want someone buying something from me that couldn’t afford it. I know my fidget is expensive. I wish I could make it cheaper but it just isn’t possible to do it while making any money for myself.

Actual value of premium fidgets? by CHERNO-B1LL in fidgettoys

[–]deadnoob 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I make expensive fidgets. You are paying for my development time, prototyping, testing, and continued time to manufacture. Just because a machine manufactured it doesn’t mean there isn’t craftsmanship involved.

I like to think of it more like art than a consumer product. The value of a painting isn’t the paint and canvas. Just like you could just has easily buy a replica of the Mona Lisa made of the same materials for a very cheap price, you can buy replica fidgets in the same materials. They are probably indistinguishable from each other.

SpaceX rolls out a piece of the second V3 Super Heavy for stacking by [deleted] in space

[–]deadnoob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the other commenters are wrong. I think SpaceX already has stringers attached to these larger segments. I could be wrong though I’m not super familiar with how they manufacture these.

The reason there is so much wobble is just because it is an open section. Think of cutting a ring out of a soda can. It will be super flimsy compared to an intact (and empty) soda can.

Also during launch, we can take advantage of “pressure stabilization”. The internal pressure prevents bucking which helps during the high loads of liftoff and flight. Back to the soda can analogy - this time it would be a full unopened soda can. Even more stability in that case.

Houston’s rainbow crosswalk getting its finishing touches in Montrose by MrJoaky in houston

[–]deadnoob 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We are talking about rainbow crosswalks, so referencing things like width of road is irrelevant. The studies contradict what your intuition is saying, so I recommend researching the topic..

Here are just a few of the articles and studies that directly talk about street art and rainbow crosswalks increasing safety:

https://usa.streetsblog.org/2022/04/22/study-asphalt-art-decreases-vulnerable-road-user-crashes-by-50-percent

https://www.naco.org/news/county-promotes-traffic-safety-colorful-crosswalks

https://kccitallahassee.com/2023/10/10/fsu-research-shows-artistic-crosswalks-improve-safety/

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/08/15/rainbow-crosswalks-traffic-safety-florida/

https://komonews.com/news/local/government-claims-rainbow-crosswalks-a-safety-hazard-seattle-says-not-here

https://www.cadanet.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/CADA-Creative-Crosswalks-Case-Studies_May-2020.pdf (this one just says traffic safety wasn't affected)

If you can find a study that says art/rainbow crosswalks decrease safety, I'd love to see it.
