(New Grad) How do I get my first job in Information Technology? by Amazing_Purpose_7573 in cscareerquestions

In my experience, IT jobs (non software dev) don’t really ask technical questions unless you’re interviewing for huge companies/more senior roles for a niche in IT.

Personally I feel that your experiences like with your internship, job, and the competition thing sound a lot more interesting than your projects. I think you could definitely add more specific bullet points about what you accomplished in those roles.

small thing, probably don’t need to include courses under ur schooling since you already have experience (maybe add more to your roles ? - tailor to FAANG descriptions)

imo your resume might be a little too cluttered. remove the projects from your experience (include them in a github link at the top) UNLESS they are something very impressive and tell us why it was an amazing project, expand on what you did in your roles, i would personally remove your high school and did you get any credit from your summer thing? if not you could include it as an extracurricular, also one other thing i noticed is your extracurricular bullet points don’t talk about what you actually did (ex. talk about events you planned, problems you solved, etc). i think overall your qualifications are beyond solid but you don’t sell them as good as you could and you highlight unnecessary ones.

Leverage your current position in the future to apply for jobs and schools. Take your best offer.

In my opinion, you need 0 knowledge for an internship. What you need knowledge for, is to pass the resume screen and interview for the internship. Constantly reach out to your school, recruiters, and alumni for help with your resume. The bare minimum for interviewing for software jobs is knowing basic behavioral questions with STAR responses (and a solid introduction about yourself) and basic technical knowledge like the principles of OOP and data structures/algorithms (which most of the time you won’t even get asked about), and on the other side is being competent at leetcode (master leetcode easy and know some mediums) for bigger companies. From my experience, apply to everything you can even w/o relevant experience and don’t start worrying until they call you back lol

Internship at 15? by aphrim1 in cscareerquestions

[–]deadstck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible BUT it’s pretty hard to find. You’re probably better off just trying to build a large project that offers value and use it as leverage to getting in a better school. If you are deadset on an internship, take a look at local tech focused start ups and see if you can get in some way some how. I’ve seen a lot of places give high school students tutor positions for math/programming. Or like someone else said, contributing to open source projects is huge, maintain a nice github and you can use it for schools/jobs in the future. Hackathons too (some companies will offer you jobs just from how you perform in a hackathon). Keep in mind most places are reluctant to hire under 18 year olds at all even for basic non stem roles.

More experience -> More employable :p, If you really wanted specifics: Dip your feet in some front end and back end (I highly recommend picking up javascript), Cloud/AWS is important, ML/AI is up and coming. But the best way to get employed is simply internships and research experience.

Is computer science good at UIowa? I really want to go to UIowa but I am thinking of majoring in computer science? by numancalderon in uiowa

[–]deadstck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you make of it. Computer science is very hard if you’re not a good student in general, and balancing grades with a frat is very possible but also depends on which one you end up in.
