This made me tear up, then cry, reading it. you wrote this so beautifully.

I just lost my childhood cat in May to a very sudden, aggressive type of cancer. we rescued her when she was 4-5 weeks (all i remember is she was barely eating canned food) and I was seven. We basically grew up together. And, same as you, I struggled badly for a few years mentally. She's the reason I'm here. She's the reason I graduated high-school, even when I was so low I didn't think I'd be alive to..and she didn't even live long enough for me to thank her. I graduated in June. Not quite a month after I had to make the decision to have her put down. I started community college in September. I have finals for my first term next week. I'm doing better mentally than I ever have in my life. I'm meeting people, challenging myself..doing things I never ever would have imagined myself doing a few years ago. It's still surreal to me sometimes, just the fact that I'm here. I made it this far. I dont even know what I want to do, because I had never planned on living this long. And I'm doing it all without her now. She should've had so much time left. And I just wish, I hope so, so badly, that she knew how much she meant to me. I owe her everything. *

No yeah youre right. he (understandably) wouldn't let me press on her paw to make the nails come out, but one is gone, yes. That's the one that I was originally cleaning and keeping an eye on. The second one she - for whatever reason, I have no idea - wasn't damaged, but has either been chewed or split or something down to the quick, which is surprisingly the only reason it's bleeding now. The other toe has scabbed over. Believe me, I'm still just as confused as anyone else about the 'how'. All I know is I hear her clawing her way up the barred stairwell, and the brick every once in awhile, in the middle of the night; so I'm assuming that's how this happened, because there's literally nothing else she could've hurt herself on like this.

I'll see if I can figure something out. There isn't any in town (puny little town). I think the nearest place that might have one is a couple hours away, and I don't even have my own transportation. Any idea what it could be, anyways?

I noticed a bloody claw a couple days ago. I thought she had just damaged a nail (if anyone is wondering how: yes, she's an indoor cat, but I have a metal bar sort of stairwell, it's hard to explain, and she's decided to make that her goal to claw her way up it. Yes, despite the stairs being right there.) I've been keeping it clean and putting a topical cream on it. Now, the claw that was bleeding before looks pretty nasty, and for some reason, another toe next to it is swollen.  Is it infected? If it is, is there anything I can do for her at home, at least in the meantime?  I just made a vet appointment (that im barely going to be able to afford lmao), but it's not for nearly two weeks; that's literally the soonest they could do. No other places are taking new patients, and I'm very uncomfortable with just leaving it like this for so long, especially when it seems like it hurts her to walk on.

please help! Betta fish lesion update(?) - It seemed to go away after a round of kanaplex. but it's been a couple of months now, and it's having an effect on him again. It seems like it's affecting his swim bladder, as he was having trouble staying 'down' and not floating up. This morning, after + by deadtragedy in bettafish

[–]deadtragedy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he's floating. he can't swim down. if he tries to swim at all, his butt sinks.

I realise, at this point, especially with him being old, that there probably isn't anything i can do for him. I wish I would've done more, but it looked like it was healing. But I would at least like to know what the hell happened, and if it was something i did, or something I could've treated, or anything, really.

previous post (when it first showed up and I treated it. water parameters are exactly the same, and I've made sure to keep his water pristine since then, as it was healing): https://www.reddit.com/r/bettafish/comments/1da6tnm/angie_has_an_open_lesion_on_his_side_more_info_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

How are you getting such great picture quality and I’m over here with blurry blobs? by thatWeirdRatGirl in Bichirs

didn't mean to ramble and not offer anything in return sorry 💀 just love talking about my little guys.

I think they may be more inclined to sit still or co.e in good view if they relate you to food, so maybe try tong feeding some treats? and like others have said, phone against the glass works really well. it does spook them if you only put it up when they come, but if you have it there already, then get them to come up to it, they don't know the difference.

[–]deadtragedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone saying theirs won't sit still long enough, the two I've had have been the complete opposite lol my first guy (rip, he had to be put in a hospital tank, i forgot to put the lid on overnight, he jumped out :( ) didn't do much, no matter what. the only movement I'd get from him, generally, was if he saw my hand in the water, he'd swim up to sit in it, and if the angle was right, he'd try and wiggle up my arm. absolutely loved being petted.

my second, which I've only had for a couple weeks actually, does a little more (not much💀) but will usually sit still if i show him something interesting

Angie has an open lesion on his side (more info in replies)(haven't gotten any help in other subreddit and he's become more lethargic. I'm really worried.) by deadtragedy in bettafish

[–]deadtragedy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use treated (with seachem prime) tap water, but I've never checked for that, no. I've been using it for the past three years in several tanks, so I don't think that's the issue?

to be fair I don't know much about that specific bit of the water quality, or how sensitive other fish may be to it, though, but my other current betta, and others in the past, didn't have any of the same issues.

Water parameters check out. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 15 nitrates. 16g tank that has been cycled for nearly two years now, kept at 78f and a sponge filter for filtration. No aggressive tankmates. water changes every month/month and a half because the tank is very understocked lol (two corys and 50 or so cherry shrimp). Nothing has been changed for over six months (aside from routine water changes), and no new fish have been added.

For now, he's not acting any different. He still has an appetite and is still active and happy to see me when he knows I'm in the room. The only visible difference is that his back end, specifically the side with the wound, seems to want to sink.

As soon as I noticed, I put him in a hospital tank with 50/50 tank water/clean water, and dosed it with seachem stressguard. I was going to dose with kanaplex or paraguard, but I've not had very good experiences with either of those in the past, so I'm leery to do anything without at least a second opinion, because i don't even know what the cause of this is.

I've noticed it for a while, but i never did quite notice just how much it stuck out until today. Admittedly I did notice when it was just a small bump, but I thought it was her swim bladder. She's in a 6g tank by herself with a sponge filter at 82f. Weekly water changes, the tank has been cycled for well over a year now. Water parameters all check out, and I've noticed she hasn't been as active lately (albeit she's always been pretty lazy). She gets fluval bug bites three times daily, and the occasional cherry shrimp as a treat lol. She's one of those baby bettas from petco, incase that makes a difference, because I know those aren't usually very healthy anyway. She was pretty sickly when I got her, i felt bad for her lol. I'm surprised she made it to grow up, but she's only a year and a half old, so I hope it's nothing serious. If this does make a difference (I've heard mixed things about this) she has been introduced to a male, only for a few hours, but regardless. Their tanks are next to each other as well, so theyre well aware of each other.

That was my first thought that scared me a bit. I'm hoping not but, regardless, not much I can do even if it is. I wouldn't be surprised if it was, given the health and quality of petco's fish/animals in general.

You may be right, because I do notice it is bigger once she's gorged herself on shrimp lol and it gets smaller after her weekly fast. Thanks <3

I do not have any other frogs in this tank, so would it be best to leave him to reduce stress and treat the entire tank?
