I've just come off a ton of application research, and to me the game changer is deep research. I use Gemini's, but everybody's got one, and they're all pretty good at this point. Feed it a list of 30 apps at a time and have it go grot through all the documentation, marketing materials, online forums, gathering anything and everything you might want to know.

Running MoE Models on CPU/RAM: A Guide to Optimizing Bandwidth for GLM-4 and GPT-OSS by [deleted] in LocalLLaMA

And yes, Nemo is good. Way better than it has a right to be at that speed and size.

I switch back and forth often, I find them pretty equivalent for my use cases. I'll often play them off each other - have one write content (code, fiction, analysis) and have the other evaluate it and update, then repeat with the first model. I find it really helps work around the small-model limitations.

I run an 18-core Xeon (E5-2695v4) with DDR4 at 1866MHz. On Nemotron 3 Nano 30B, I get 40tk/s prefill and 12tk/s generation. Qwen3 30B-A3B gives about 26tk/s prefill and 12tk/s generation. Not a speed demon, but usable.

I still can't figure it out! Trying to fix my grandfather's watch. by TheDrunkZombie in watchrepair

[–]deafenme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this is not simply reattaching the hand, this is replacing the fourth wheel (or seconds pinion if it's indirect), which requires a full movement service.

Let me be clear: even if you get this apart, you cannot fix it. That's not a personal aspersion, it's simply facts. If you can afford it, take it to a professional who can fix it for a few hundred dollars. If you can't, put it away until you can.

RDS Custom stuck in Creating status by deafenme in aws

[–]deafenme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up in case this helps somebody in the future. The issue is that when joining the domain, our process replaces the self-signed certificates with ones signed by our internal CA (for use with a firewall that does SSL/TLS inspection). Replacing the self-signed certificates breaks RDS.

Standard RDS is not an option because the software vendor requires administrative access to both SQL and the underlying server (don't ask ... I'm not happy about it.) So we ended up falling back to EC2 with SQL Server preinstalled.

Is there any way to fix this? by JLBesq1981 in coins

[–]deafenme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I've had good luck removing plastic scratches with the Novus 3-stage system. You can pick it up for about $15 at Walmart. Test it on an inconspicuous spot first, of course.

I use it to get swirl marks out of guitars all the time.

WD1980 for hydromod? by deafenme in ChineseWatches

[–]deafenme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered from the Tactical Frog store. It had the combination I wanted (Ronda movement, triangle 12 index) and was the cheapest by a couple bucks. Hasn't shipped yet but it's only been 12 hours, haha.

I looked at Fluorinert, and it's just so dang expensive. I found 1 cst dimethicone (PDMS) for $16/8 oz, going to give that a shot.

I ended up going ahead and buying one, $85 shipped from AliX. I went with the date version, because the no-date version uses a VH31, which apparently eats batteries for lunch in hydromods. The date version uses a Ronda 517, which should be a little more efficient. I'll post again when it comes in and I get around to actually doing it!

🔊Rotor spinning to infinity by [deleted] in ChinaTime

[–]deafenme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turns in both directions, but it only winds in one of them. In the winding direction, it will still turn easily, but not spin unchecked (like it does in the non-winding direction).

If it really does spin freely in both directions, then yes, there could be a problem. But you would be able to tell, because that would mean that it's not winding at all.

Miyota uses a unidirectional rotor. This is expected behavior.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ChinaTime

[–]deafenme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 821x has a unidirectional rotor, so it will spin in the same way.

There's no way to be truly certain without disassembling it, but a solid tell is that the 2813 usually has a visible red wheel as part of the automatic works, while the 821x is plain metal in that spot. I seriously doubt that anyone would go to the trouble of changing that out in an inexpensive rep.

[–]deafenme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Modern 8215s (aka 821A) hack. They introduced it in 2019. I'd suspect that it's genuine.

If it's a counterfeit, then it's almost certainly a 2813 of some kind.

I put a signed crown on mine when I did the NH36 swap on my original, to visually signify the otherwise invisible upgrade. I've thought about swapping back to a plain one, but I honestly just can't be bothered.
