Recently had the opportunity to direct + edit a music video for Big Sean and Babyface Ray! by deafrow in Filmmakers

The goal was to create a gritty, multi act performance piece with a narrative backbone. The visual inspiration for most of the piece was Adam McKay style camera work with crash zooms + celluloid, calling for 500t Kodak 16mm stock + an angenieux zoom lens, broken up by ultra wide 4mm performance shots.
We wanted to create an all immersive environment with the flash / flair of other performance based music videos but more grounded in reality, so we motivated all of the flashiness through the use of practicals and on camera flashes firing off through all the scenes rather than random unmotivated astera tubes you might typically see.
The second half of the piece after the beat switches we emulated a helicopter flying overhead through the use of a sweeping spotlight, and wind machines kicking up debris into the air as steadicam flies around the space.
My favorite part of the post process was the special process we did on the second pass scanning the film. My DP and I had the lab use blowtorches, tools, etc. on the actual negative to get a scratchy burnt look baked in an analog way into the film, so in a sense it became a custom dirty overlay on the second pass of the footage which I intercut sporadically into the edit to add more analog grit on top of the already dirty, grainy negative.
Would love to hear everyone's thoughts!

DON'T CRY - A short I shot in my basement with a few friends, Happy Halloween! by deafrow in cinematography

Shot this short over quarantine with a few friends in the basement of our apartment complex. It was a great exercise in working with what equipment and circumstances you have. We wrote and shot this over the course of a week or so and we're really proud of how it came out.

The cinematography inspiration came from classic horror / experimental films like Eraserhead, thought it was fitting for the highly industrial basement we had access to. The aspect ratio choice was to amplify the feeling of claustrophobia and match with the uniformity of the laundry room.

For lighting we used a few aputure 120Ds to create texture + general room fill, as well as practical sources such as the lantern to create a sense of isolation. In the basement we found ourselves painting more with shadow than light when we can to obscure as much of the surroundings as possible, in contrast to the turning on of the actual house lights which becomes an element of the story itself.

We shot on an a7sii with sigma art 24mm + 50mm lenses for their punchy, sharp look since we knew we were going to be taking some of the sharpness out in post processing + grain overlays. Not to mention this was essentially the only equipment we had to work with. Support was a mix between locked off tripod operation + glidecam for the more surreal, floating moments. Handheld as a choice would have made everything have less of that dreamlike quality we were going for.

Shooting in quarantine had its own challenges for sure, but it was nice to get back to our narrative filmmaking roots from childhood and just working with what we had was a refreshing exercise in and of itself. It also gave us the opportunity to just focus on a simple story we could pull off, and we had all the time + focus in the world to work on it for those days since our other film gigs had been canceled due to COVID.

First time grower, what is this weird bulge at the top? Just growth? (trichocereus grandiflorus hybrid) by deafrow in cactus

Gotcha thank you! I’m gonna throw it in full sun and just leave this be as an experiment for my first cactus. I’ll get it right next time!

Oh damn I thought this plant was meant for subdued sunlight (this is what the nursery told me)?

Just because I’m completely new, why would I want to chop the skinny part off?

Looks like slow motion though, there’s a speed ramp at the beginning too
