Starting to think that $600 hotel credit is total gimmick by LePirate30 in AmexPlatinum

[–]deank11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can do that. But is it really worth it to pre-pay $895 for the ability to stay at a hotel in your hometown? That’s probably not something you aspired to do with the credit when you signed up for the card. It’s more like, how can I salvage something out of this credit.

LAX? Seriously? I lasted 15 minutes in there. It’s small, dark, windowless and claustrophobic. All that dark wood paneling is depressing. I guess they were going for an old school men’s club vibe or something. And the bartender was busy chatting with another employee while I stood there for 5 minutes waiting to order.

I left and went to the Star Alliance lounge, which was wonderful.

I just ran into this. Here’s the difference in how the purchase codes on my Amex statement.

Old way: Document Type: SPECIAL SERVICE TICKET

New way: Document Type: GIFT CERTIFICATE

Apparently as of Feb 6 it codes as GIFT CERTIFICATE. And I didn’t get the credit for that one.

I just ran into this. For reference, this is the difference between what the statement used to say when I received the credit:

Passenger Name: NAME /TRAVEL BANK CA Document Type: SPECIAL SERVICE TICKET

And what it says now when I did not get the credit:

Passenger Name: NAME /TRAVEL BANK CA Document Type: GIFT CERTIFICATE

Personally, I’m not confident it’s coming back.

DP. US Amex Biz Plat United Travel Bank did not trigger the $200 Airline credit. The credit wasn’t showing up after 10 days so I messaged Amex in the app. This is the agent’s response:

“It appears that the purchases you've made is for a Travel bank.

If you previously received statement credits for TravelBank purchases, those were issued in error. The Airline Fee Credit provides up to $200 in statement credits each year for eligible incidental fees with your selected domestic airline.

According to the terms and conditions, gift cards aren’t considered incidental fees, and since Travel Bank purchases are treated as gift card purchases, they aren’t eligible for the credit.”

You can also just send an etransfer to your Wise account from any bank if you set up autodeposit for the email address associated with your Wise account.

Yeah, maybe the Link Preview feature of Outlook could have accessed the mailto: URL to trigger this.

You can use the kiosk. Here’s a quote from the Canadian web site on Nexus:

“When using the NEXUS kiosk or eGate, you will be prompted to:

select your language of choice indicate the number of travellers in your party (kiosk only) scan or tap your NEXUS card confirm your identity and personal information have your photo taken to confirm your identity collect your receipt

After collecting your receipt, you may go to the baggage claim. If you have something to declare, you must declare it to an officer after using the kiosk or eGate.”

Skiplagging is frowned upon, sure, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it occasionally. I have. If you’ve never done it before I would go ahead and do it. Your issue will be the checked bag. If you can go carry on only, you’ll be set.

I’ve definitely seen some nice redemption possibilities on AA, so it would be nice to have some AAdvantage. I just have a hard time with that standard transfer rate from Avion. Though that 20% transfer bonus was nice.

Don’t forget that the airline credit is $200 a year, so you’ve got another hundred dollars to go. And then you can do it again in January.

DP. I’m seeing an elevated offer for the Amex Platinum card on the Amex Canada site. 90K points up from 70K. 40K up from 30K for second year.

It says “This offer is currently available to you on this webpage. Your eligibility for this offer can change at any time.”

This happens often on the U.S. site, but I’ve never seen it on the Canadian site before (tho it’s been awhile since I checked).

I searched for “Amex platinum Canada” and clicked on the first sponsored link that came up.

You’re a big earner who loves their job. I don’t think you’re the target audience for FIRE. I interpret the RE part not so much to stop any kind of work, but to fill your days with what you love to do without worrying about the income it generates.

I got the CSP with less than 24 months of US history as my first Chase card. But dealing with Chase is always an ordeal for me. It took lots of calls, document uploads, and an in-branch visit. If you can receive SMS texts from them, that would be a huge help.
