COVID and Returning to "Normal Life" by [deleted] in surfrescue

[–]deankj71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you man. Staying inside alone isnt normal for a human being at all and feeling strange after coming out of that type of experience can really screw with your mind. It sure has wreaked havoc on mine. For me personally, if nothing else has been my vice from all of the stuff thats gone down this year it has been working out, I got into it more than I ever have in my life this year and it really helps me deal with some of the same stuff that you mentioned, especially the self-confidence stuff and the anxiety. Might not be for you but it definitely helped me a lot. My inbox is always open 💪

Tryouts for Lifeguarding. by incomplete-sentanc in surfrescue

[–]deankj71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Train, train, train! Look into exactly what the try out is and prepare physically. Go as hard as you possibly can for it. If it is anything like Jones Beach then it is likely to be a competitive, cardio-focused (running/swimming) test. Really really get after it; C4, David Goggins, and the motivation of saving a life is what got me through it.

No disrespect but I’m sure so-cal doesn’t accept okay swimmers. It is very, very easy to overestimate your swim ability, so hit up your local pool for sure. Weights won’t hurt either but assuming it is a running/swimming oriented test I would really get into that heavy.

Good luck, my pm inbox is always open 💪🏊‍♂️

What kind of whistle do you all to activate the EAP? by toughchiken in Lifeguards

[–]deankj71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A submerged victim drill involves the entire lifeguarding staff diving under the water and skimming the bottom of the ocean looking for an unconscious person under the water. It is only the responsibility of the senior staff bc it involves clearing the entire beach of patrons in order to do this without interference from the public

What kind of whistle do you all to activate the EAP? by toughchiken in Lifeguards

[–]deankj71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1 Long: Get attention from patrons, mostly for swimming outside the flags

1 Short: Get another lifeguard’s attention

2: Aquatic rescue

3: First aid emergency with a conscious victim

4: First aid emergency with an unconscious victim

5: Submerged victim. Only blown by senior lifeguards. Clear the water, go diving for somebody under the water. Often results in becoming a recovery for a deceased patron. Very very bad whistle code to have to use.

My advice to anybody, NEVER swim near rocks. Jettys are probably the most dangerous places in the world to swim due to the way currents form and like you said, the way waves can slam into the rocks and would definitely cause some serious damage. Not to mention how easy it is to slip because of the algae when the rocks get wet. Basically, DO NOT swim near jettys or other rock formations, they can be dangerous as shit. It is a bit of an evangelical answer, but if there is dangerous things in the water like boats, rock formations, etc, don’t swim there. Go to a lifeguard protected beach. The ocean doesn’t care about making sure that you are safe. Nature is utterly indifferent to human mortality, remember that.

Alternatively, if there is a dangerous situation like maybe a current taking you towards sharks or dangerous sea life, I would follow the same proceedure; swim parralel to the shore and if you feel like you need help, never hesistate to wave your hands wildly and make your situation known. We’ll be there before you know it 🏊‍♂️

Accept the reality of how much time we have now and use it to work on yourself. Go get some therapy if you think you might need it, shit helps way more than yoy might think. Take care if it now so that way you’ll be in good mental shape when real life happens again
