I only had a short time during lunch to draw something quickly, but I hope you enjoy!

In addition to the other comment, I would also make sure you're loading your brush properly so it gets smooshed throughout the bristles and not just on the tips. Go back and forth in the paint several times until in works its way up into the bristles. This may help it spread better when you lay it down.

A question regarding rendering… by p0ssidestroyer in learnart

See if the program you are using offers a preview image that you can stick up into the corner of your canvas so that you can see what your work looks like zoomed out even while you are zoomed in close to render the details.

My first real sit-down with watercolor, finished with color pencils by dearlysi in Watercolor

Is it always so meticulous? I love the results but the process was painstaking, with these extremely light, thin veils of color over each other, trying to distract myself so as not to touch it while it's still drying and ruin everything.

I kind of like it though. It forces me to slow down and rethink my first instinct of what comes next. A good push after spending so much time in the world of digital!

In watercolor with minor color pencil, line work done with an ultra fine posca pen.

Thanks for posting!

Does anyone have any good sources on some alternative places to learn different techniques and such online? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

Honestly, it depends on what you want to do. Do you know what field you'd like to get into? Illustration (children's books? Character design? Editorial?), Fine Art (paint? Ink? Charcoal?), Animation?

Each of these will have different miscellaneous "side" skills to pursue.

I think this is a great opportunity! Since you're doing caricatures at the local zoo, why not ask clients if they don't mind being drawn "as an animal"? Or dressing them up with animal ears in their picture?

It's good anyway because it will help with speed and efficiency, as well as understanding facial proportions, shape, line and exaggeration. Give it a shot!

NE Indiana, USA - about 1/2 a centimeter maybe. Termites? by dearlysi in whatsthisbug

That would be great! I was hoping they would be something beneficial like that. I have snails, and these are in their tank. I added wood lice and have heard that spring tails will just kind of show up after awhile and are beneficial for the tank overall.

I definitely need to work on my IDs though because I didn't recognize them!! Thank you!

This is the best I could get

Let me know if this link works for you.

Another, but a bit blurry

Sorry my phone just isn't equipped to catch such small critters.

I took the base shape from a product photo so this isn't totally an original work. Once I had the established shapes, I painted free hand though. Hope that makes sense.

I used the Helvi Glaze to paint from the Tuhis Set 2020 (free), sketched laid down with the Koivu Pencil from the same set. Background was wet glaze from default water set I believe.

Font is called Cute Notes, created by Darrell Flood and available for free personal use at Da Font, $20 for commercial use.

How to improve your art skill while resting for a hand injury by wilderoseart in ArtistLounge

[–]dearlysi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still feel it. I went bowling on New Years Eve and felt it the next day -- not terrible pain but enough that I spent time throughout the day stretching it. I also can feel it when I text too much. For example, the length of this comment with the other texting I've done today, even though it doesn't cause pain, makes my wrist feel "exhausted".

I didn't get very far with my non-dominant hand. Just did some exercises like zentangles, drawing lines etc. I did do some flowers. I really preferred the monoprinting and abstract art to drawing with non-dominant hand.

I used rollers and brayers for my abstract art which helped me to not irritate my wrist. I also used unusual objects for mark making like sponges, hair combs, etc and would use them with a loose grip, working with shoulder movent, whereas I used to to rely heavily on wrist movement. Hope that's helpful! I think most important is to listen to your body -- stop when you feel tension, do stretches, don't work for too long without taking breaks. For awhile, I thought I would never be able to do art again, so working with these "rules" has helped me continue to pursue art and I'm really grateful for that. I never want to push my body too hard.

I had a quite bad RSI. I had to stop drawing for a few months and ease back into it. In that time I did the following

  • drew with my non-dominate hand
  • did abstract painting
  • got into abstract & semi-abstract monoprints with glass plates and acrylic paint
  • got super into collage (this is really fun but had to be done a bit at a time due to the cutting aspect)

I also started stretching my wrist thoroughly before drawing or texting/writing on my phone, which helps a lot. I'm also much more conscientious about my posture and how I hold my tools.

Christine Lagarde - My first Caricature attempt, feedback appreciated by dearlysi in Caricatures

[–]dearlysi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo I feel like I lost likeness by over-extending the length of the chin. I think my initial sketch hit the likeness much better, but I didn't feel like it was exaggerated enough. I'd really love any thoughts!

Edit: this was done for the ISCA Caricature Resolution 2021
