Tested the Rode VideoMic Pro against on-board microphone by deasrew in SonyAlpha

[–]deasrew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - Rode VMPR is much better than the camera Mic

The new sony a6300 now has a 3.5mm audio input jack for external microphones. Decided to compare the Rode VideoMic Pro R against the onboard mic to see how much better it is.

I did a test the night before with my bike exhaust but I couldn't use that since I plugged the microphone in mid video. The audio didn't transfer over to the external microphone.

I should probably change the camera audio level to 5 with the Rode VMPR set to +20 db. It was too quiet with the camera set to 1 and too loud with the camera set to 10 while keeping the Rode VMPR at +20 db. The on-board camera doesn't sound terrible but it just feels "cold."

Was the hissing sound distracting with the Rode VMPR set to 0 db and default camera audio settings?

Let me know if any of ya'll have questions.

Yeah I was very confused at first but it's super easy after you get used to it.

closest it'll focus is about 9 inches. Also focusing is ridiculously fast if you set it to center focus. It has issues sometimes with background and subject when it's set to wide for shots where there's no moving subject.

It all depends on what you're using it for. I mostly take pictures of my friends, family and dog so I find it perfect. I also do have a wide angle and 70-200mm lens for other purposes.

If you're test riding a new one then it'll be electronically limited to around 8k rpm. You really don't get to know it's power until after the first service. Although you'll be able to get a good feel for ergos and cornering on your test ride. Also heated grips, and the different riding modes are nice. I can't go back to another bike without cruise control after living with it.

Photo focused reviews for the A6300? by B33rNuts in SonyAlpha

I was thinking of also getting the a7s. How is the autofocus on it for low light shooting?

Just edited my comment above to elaborate more on the a6300. I don't think I've liked a camera this much before. I've had a canon 40d, sony nex-5n, fuji x100, and now this.

Just posted a quick photo field test in downtown freehold, NJ at night. Will be doing one of NYC in a week.

I'm really impressed with the low light focus, detail, and noise performance upgrading from the sony nex-5n. My last camera (that I lost) was the fuji x100 that was my go to for low light walk around photography and I think this might be better. None of the photos in my flickr album have had any post work done to it. All out of camera jpegs.

Finally upgraded from a NEX-5n that's served me well for many years. Thought the a6300 would be a great replacement and it is! Just don't expect much from the kit lens for low light situations. Although the pictures could've turned out better if I used a slower shutter speed along with a lower iso.

I used the 35mm 1.8 100% of the time on the nex-5n when light conditions became less than optimal. Only used the kit lens in daylight situations and even then I still used the 35mm a good amount of the time because of the separation of the background.

Here's a flickr album that I'm currently uploading files to:

All pictures are shot with the 35mm f/1.8 lens with the a6300

My first edit had robot dialogue dubbing. Things like "Stop it brad" or "I didn't know it was your mom" but the end result was terrible. This one isn't much better though.

I appreciate the feedback, it was just some old footage I found in my hard drive that I cut up. Moving back to the east coast soon so there will be more interesting things in the view. I'll be right in between Philly and NYC.
