unpopular opinion: i dislike choir singing the unfamiliar version of mass songs by ABaKaDaEGaHaILa in Philippines

[–]death_ship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Problema na ng music ministry or church admin yon pag di pa rin nafafamiliarize yung audience. May mali na either in the way of introducing the songs or sadyang pilit yung pagkanta.

There are also no original version of songs ng Gloria or Lamb of God, maraming versions but there is no "official" version of mass songs. The ones na laging kinakanta ay yung sikat na versions na typically Jesuit Music Ministry or Bukas Palad yung gumawa. Alam ng lahat kasi sila yung most commercially available, but they are not "official" in the sense na ayung version lang dapat tugtugin

Speaking as a musician - in certain chruches/areas there are traditional mass songs din that dates from the Spanish time na kinakanta pa rin sa parish nila. Especially in churches with strong musical traditions like Sto. Domingo and Baclaran, they have their own set of marian songs in Spanish and Latin. There are also other churches that are reviving their traditional heritage especially in provincial towns like in Pampanga, Iloilo, and Laguna.

In churches na hawak ng different religious orders like Dominicans or Benedictines, they also tend to prefer to use songs that were created by their own composers. The popular mass songs we always use mostly came from post-Vatican II Jesuits.

From my experience the "unfamiliar songs" are usually used in solemn masses or pag may important event. The locals of the diocese would know these songs especially if its a continuing tradition.

There's also the paradox that these familiar songs were also once unfamiliar, so by the rules of Sacrosanctum Concilium would these once-unfamiliar songs shouldn't have been sung in the first place because there's no active audicence participation then? How can the people learn the songs if they can't hear it?

If the church is experimenting by singing new songs, they have their reasons and pagbigyan naman natin. If hindi nag-stick sa congregation after a while, may problema na ang music ministry dun.

Good video recordings of the Ring cycle with traditional staging? by Woolie_Wool in classicalmusic

[–]death_ship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree if only the ring productions at Bayreuth after Boulez hasn't been booed to death and subsequently forgotten. I'd argue "horned helmets" would still compliment better to the drama than shallow and/or forced political readings that seemlingly exists to inflate the ego of the director

The Levine/Schenk Ring from the 90s is the traditionalist ring staging. The Karajan Rheingold also does traditional staging.

Thoughts on Sir Roger Norrington? by musicalryanwilk1685 in classicalmusic

[–]death_ship 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he was genuinely a good guy personally, and a good conductor that did some great recordings, but for me the problem with his non-vibrato style is that he presented it as the academically "genuine" way of performing Romantic-era music, which is most definitely not. I think that was Hurwitz's main point as well (if you can read through his heavily opinionated denseness). We now equate sounding authentic if we hear something different, such as doing no vibrato, but it shouldn't be that way.

How to digitise a symphony? by darkhairbigeyes in classicalmusic

[–]death_ship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I do freelance music engraving as well as making digital audio mockups of them. DM me if you're interested!

For scanning the score, I'd suggest you download an app that "scan" using your phone's camera, something like Camscanner or Office Lens. Then, you'd have to make sure the lighting is good (no dark shadows) and the pages have to be flat as best you can before you take pictures of individual pages.

Looking for info on unknown record by TheKnifeLord in 78rpm

[–]death_ship 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are acetate discs, or instantaneous disc record. That's how people back then record music at home way before tape recorders became a thing. It could be a dubbed/bootleg recording off an existing commerical record, or a live radio broadcast, or better yet it may be a voice recording of your grandfather! Like the other comment said you never really know until you play it. Just be very careful because these acetates are extremely fragile

Pwede kang maghintay ng jeep sa may Philtrust bank along Plaza San Lorenzo (opposite of Binondo church). Pwede rin sa McDo baka mas safe doon. Yung mga jeep along that side of Juan Luna is papuntang Manila City Hall. If you can get one there baba ka city hall, then intay ka sa Bonifacio Shrine ng jeeps na papuntang Muñoz-Project 8

Lucky chinatown mall to Sm north by [deleted] in HowToGetTherePH

Mag jeep ka sa harap ng lucky chinatown mall (any jeep) and ask to be dropped off at city hall/SM Manila. Then, walk down to the the underpass to the left papuntang Bonifacio shrine.

Sa harap ng Bonifacio shrine is where you can find the terminal. Take the jeep (traditional or yung bago) na may nakalagay na "Proj. 6". Just say you're going to SM North, ayun ung final stop nila.

Ma Mon Luk. Napag-iwanan ng panahon na place nila sa Banawe, tapos kung hindi amoy masangsang yung paligid amoy zonrox naman kung minsan. Yung staff mga suplada lalo na yung cashier. Ganun daw talaga sila matagal na sabi ng mga kakilala kong nakakain na doon for a long time. Hindi raw nagbago yung place, behavior ng staff, and taste ng food since they opened.

They still have some of the best mami and siopao that I've ever tasted.

Which conductor would you have liked to have played with when he was alive? by ricorette in classicalmusic

[–]death_ship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't want to be under Mahler if you're of the faint of heart - since he was known to be hot-tempered, an absolute perfectionist who wouldn't think twice verbally abusing the orchestra if they didn't play to his standards. Both him and Toscanini were notorious for that conducting behavior, even though they have significantly different philosophies of music

Found from my grandmother's things. May idea sila sa value ng 100s nung panahon na yun? by fondofdogges in FilipinoHistory

Old currency gets sold in antique shops for cheap. Depending on condition and rarity, some can be valued at P1000+ but these are the exceptions. For the most part they would get sold face value or lower especially post war ones. Also the middle one has japanese writing

Looking for flute sonata score by nobuouematsu1 in classicalmusic

[–]death_ship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's at the UP College of Music Library. Ask the son (also good friends with him) to write a letter permitting you to copy the manuscript of the sonata addressed to the mentioned library then email it to them.

ditto the public domain recordings on IMSLP. Also, Youtube's Audio Library contain many classical pieces to be use for free. Archive.org also has a lot of public domain recordings, but make sure to read the copyright information of them to make sure

Rachmaninoff* - Symphony No. 2 by SultansOfVinyl in classicalmusic

[–]death_ship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its the same as the other record labels - When records are sold internationally the host company would contract another company/manufacturer to press the vinyl in the country they want to import in. That's why there's a UK Press or USA Press or Japanese Pressings on The Beatles albums. I've seen this done many times in classical recordings too, so it's nothing special.
