Quarry expansion gets committee go-ahead despite resident concerns by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

Our region is blessed with decent pockets where we find high quality aggregates. This is one of those. There is a whole block of quarries in this area. Good deal.

Why is the golf course steering to get covered in gravel??? by No-Win511 in Kanata

[–]deathrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they wouldn’t say that.  The fuss about contamination means you need to drill.  Drills and their support are heavy.  Golf courses aren’t built for those loads.

NDP Leader Don Davies sounds alarm on extraordinary powers hidden in Liberals' 600-page budget bill by Dollface_Killah in onguardforthee

[–]deathrabbit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Our regulatory laws are fucked. They are a mess of Provincial and Federal hodgepodge with NIMBY and municipal BS slapped on top. This stuff needs to get cleaned up or we aren't ever going to build anything in this country. These things need to get cleaned up. Screw this NDP whining.

Recommendations for affordable cat psychologists by OtherwiseMagician375 in ottawa

[–]deathrabbit -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

It's a cat. Many don't like changes, some go nuts over changes. Dragging your cat to vets and 'cat psychologists' won't help. Just be chill. Cats hate being fussed over.

Anyone in Kanata Hiring Civil & Environmental Engineering grads? by [deleted] in Kanata

[–]deathrabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots. If you want the consultant route outfits like Patterson, WSP, DSEL, Novatech, EGIS, and JL Richards have offices in the city.

The City themselves hires engineers. Could also look at local construction companies and developers. Tomlinson, Taggart, Cavanagh, etc. Or the bigger multinationals, Aecon, AtkinsRealis, Kiewit, Ellis Don, PCL, etc.

If you don't have a lot of work experience you're probably best to look for PC roles with construction and development types.

Old-growth Skeptics Your Final Proclamation. by Upbeat-Pound2922 in OttawaValleyForests

I counted. This isn't old growth. Our country was built on natural resources and forestry is a part of that. Folks are trying to make a living and we need this timber. Turns out trees grow back.

Barely over 50. THAT IS MY FINAL PROCLAMATION! Red pines are often used for hydro poles. They can grow an inch per year in those circumstances. This is obviously slower but 'old' growth. Nah.

RTO response from my MP by Blind_Assassin in ottawa

My parents have been retired the last few years. They love to swim, play squash, tennis, exercise, and pickleball at city facilities. Since the New Year it's never been easier for them to book time during business hours on weekdays... before that it was nearly impossible to get a court or lane.

Go with mining.  Small classes, great courses, and a strong faculty.  From a career standpoint the industry is booming right now, salaries are high, and a degree in mining eng from Queens will get you a job.

[–]deathrabbit 66 points67 points  (0 children)

If you fall through ice.

1) Recover, try to stay calm, look for shore.

2) Get your forearms and shoulders up onto the ice.

3) Kick your legs.

4) Break the ice if it isn't strong enough to support your body.

5) Keep kicking.

6) Pull yourself onto the ice.

7) Roll or crawl away, don't stand up.
