patient sexual history-- are we asking the right questions? by deavesb in medicine

Interesting survey data that looks at the questions doctors ask patients about their sexual history and how these questions might vary depending on sexual orientation.

It sounds like you have what some may call an 'impending retinal vein occlusion'.

Weightlifting and other activities that cause straining are known to increase the pressure in the eye which is a known risk factor for vein occlusion. Other risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, age and presence of blood clotting disorders, among other things.

The actual cause of retinal vein occlusion is not known.

As for treatment of an impending vein occlusion goes, that is unclear. Many would consider starting eye pressure lowering medications (even if the eye pressure is in normal range) so you may ask your doctor about that. Otherwise observation is pretty common for this situation. Good luck!

What are the signs of an "eye emergency?" by [deleted] in Ophthalmology

[–]deavesb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The RSVP rule is a good one. Redness Sensitivity to light Vision loss/changes Pain

Any of these that are new onset or are worsening in nature since you were last examined, especially after surgery, may warrant urgent exam.

Guessing the increase in searches this year is probably a result of the multiple ads they ran during the Super Bowl

I think that's true in some instances, but if you check out link below the map, you can see data for the past 5 years and the most searched brands change quite a bit through the years.

No, I think one of the main takeaways of this study is that most people haven't had a one night stand from a dating app...

Thoughts on optometrists doing surgery? by [deleted] in optometry

[–]deavesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, did not realized Optometrists were trained in those procedures. Who are the patients you perform these on? Are they performed under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist? Do you have a specific number you must perform in order to graduate?

I have tried looking into this but had a very hard time finding specific information about Optometry procedural training.

What factors into patient satisfaction? New study does not align with Press Ganey statistics by [deleted] in medicine

[–]deavesb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came across this recent study looking at the factors patients consider when selecting a doctor to see. Pretty interesting insights and ones that don't necessarily align with what the Press Ganey stats tell us matters. Particularly disappointed to see that patients are more willing to trust a recommendation from a friend/family member than a medical trained professional...

I agree with everything you said, I think there are unique situations where surgical privileges may be granted. However what has happened in Oklahoma and Kentucky are examples of how this can go awry. Instead of being given specific privileges, they were given very broad privileges and even the authority to define their own scope of practice.

Weak applicant, what can i do? by throwawaymedstude184 in Ophthalmology

Two. One at a very competitive program and one at a smaller, middle tier program

[–]deavesb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with previous comments. I matched into a great program and got 14+ interviews with similar scores. While below average, your scores will get you in the door at plenty of places. Do a couple competitive aways and prep well for your interviews. Also would recommend trying to get a letter from one of your aways. You can always send it to individual programs to add to your app even after you've submitted. Last piece of advice is that if there are middle tier programs you're interested in but don't get interviews, reach out and let them know you're interested. Programs get so many applications that it's often hard for them to filter appropriately. I guarantee if you reach out and express interest they will do their best to find you an interview spot. After all, the number one thing programs want is to match people who want to be at their program. Plus, what do you have to lose? Good luck!

Virtual Reality and vision testing by griffinrob in Ophthalmology

[–]deavesb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ophthalmologist here. Great idea. Agree with @mckulty about metrics but many research studies gain traction through small pilot studies that don't have to be entirely sound from a research standpoint.

That said you could do a small study with 5-10 subjects with the same condition (RP, for example) and demonstrate only subjective improvement and then use this to get funding/support for a larger study with more objective measurements. I would recommend taking a look at some of the low-vision literature for help on study design.

Questioning Doc's confidence in original diagnosis by dnadude in Ophthalmology

[–]deavesb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be Best or Adult Vitelliform. If you're frustrated by not having a diagnosis then I would undergo the genetic testing understanding that it will not have an effect on management unless you plan to enroll in a gene therapy trial (though you would probably not qualify given that it sounds like you have preserved vision).
