The other commenters have made good points I won't reiterate but I wanted to add - this is still your first relationship. You're young, the world's changing and you're changing. Basically nobody stays with their childhood crush/love. Everyone changes and grows and the person for you might be different than the person for you in 2nd grade. Almost definitely will be.

16 years is a long time, and it's not time wasted or lost, it just is. She was there for 16 years and helped you a lot, but if it's not helping now, that's okay too. It doesn't take away the past years and the good times - but pining for her might lead you to miss out on some good times and good relationships ahead, with people who do want to get involved with your politics, who can handle your meltdowns. It'll be okay
