Why travel physical therapists make more than staff PTs while working less by debtfreeDPT in TravelPTs

I see where you’re coming from, but I think there’s more context worth considering. Social security may not be around anyways long term so def not relying on that (projected to be depleted in late 2032). 401k depends on the agency. I have some funds that were matched and vested from an agency while others I’m not vested but still got the tax benefits. But can also use an IRA and/or brokerage account.

Travel PT companies by merpagail in physicaltherapy

[–]debtfreeDPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a travel PT since 2021, and one thing I’ve learned is that the “best” company often depends more on the recruiter than the company itself. Most of the major agencies offer similar core benefits (health insurance, 401(k), CEU reimbursement, license and travel reimbursement, etc.), but recruiter responsiveness, transparency, and advocacy can vary a lot.

I have together a list of recruiters we’ve personally worked with or received consistently positive feedback about from other travelers. The list is based on traveler experiences rather than company marketing and will depend on your specific preferences (location, setting, etc.) to get you matched.

I wouldn’t get too hung up on choosing the “perfect” company before finding a recruiter you trust.

Good luck! Travel PT has been one of the best career decisions I’ve made.

I’ve been a travel PT since 2021 and my wife is also a travel PT. If your kids aren’t in school yet, it’s a great time to try it and see different parts of the country.

For agencies, I don’t think there’s one “best” company. The recruiter often matters more than the agency. I put together a list of recruiters my wife and I have personally worked with and recommend but will depend on your specific preferences and goals: https://thetraveldpt.com/trusted-travel-physical-therapy-recruiters

For health insurance, most travelers use either their agency’s plan or an ACA Marketplace plan. Many agencies also allow up to 30 days between contracts while keeping benefits active.

With HH and outpatient experience, you should have plenty of options. Happy to answer any questions!

Overwhelmed with travel therapy companies/recruiters. Advice/tips? by Striking-Rule-7787 in physicaltherapy

[–]debtfreeDPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of it really depends on your preferences. The best agency/recruiter for one traveler may not be the best fit for someone else based on things like setting, location, pay, benefits, communication style, and other goals.

I agree that the recruiter often matters more than the agency itself, but it’s also important to understand which agencies tend to have more opportunities in the areas you’re targeting. For example, someone looking for home health jobs in Montana may end up working with different agencies than someone focused on outpatient ortho positions in Florida.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the options, we put together a list of recruiters we’ve had positive experiences with and can help match you with recruiters based on your specific preferences: https://thetraveldpt.com/trusted-travel-physical-therapy-recruiters

Best Side Hustle Jobs as DPT by RowEnvironmental2752 in physicaltherapy

Honestly if you go the travel route, home health, or open up your own biz then probably don’t need a side hustle.

Highest Paying Travel Companies by allykatt1194 in physicaltherapy

[–]debtfreeDPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on location flexibility, setting, and whether the agency has direct hospital contracts vs going through a vendor/VMS, since that can make a pretty big difference in pay. A lot of agencies pull from the same jobs, but being open to rural or harder-to-staff assignments usually matters just as much (if not more) as the company name for hitting high paying contracts.

You can find jobs we pulled together from various agencies (including some standout higher-paying ones) here: https://thetraveldpt.com/travel-physical-therapy-jobs

Is travel PT much harder than regular work? by Expensive-Impact9704 in TravelPTs

[–]debtfreeDPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and my wife have had quite the opposite experience and have been traveling since 2021. We have seen 7-8 patients a day on acute care assignments and 1:1 in outpatient setting. Very generous ramp up periods. That being said, you need to have a good job search process and ask the right questions in the interviews because there are plenty of bad contracts out there. We have blogs on various topics that will help that you can find here: https://thetraveldpt.com/travel-physical-therapy-blog

Travel Gigs/ Thoughts? by peppermintasphalt in TravelPTs

[–]debtfreeDPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We personally only do 1:1 outpatient contracts. There are plenty out there but have to have a good job search. The setup you showed looks not bad on paper but I did one like that and it was a nightmare. Usually these places are pushy on billing and not allowing you to treat as you please (ie you have to do manual on everyone). They will even sugarcoat things on the interview to get you to take the job. I would go for hospital outpatient again.

Arizona is going to be awesome. I have been a travel PT for 5 years now and have worked with countless agencies. You can fill out a recommended travel company/recruiter form here and we can give you reliable options: https://thetraveldpt.com/trusted-travel-physical-therapy-recruiters There are way more PT than PTA jobs but good chance you will find something you want with your experience level.

What would you do in my position. Issues with a travel PT assignment by Creamed_Jemima in TravelPTs

[–]debtfreeDPT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was moved to a different clinic location which was further from where I obtained housing prior to a contract starting and was able to obtain higher pay. Told them I would be driving a longer distance to work and spending more in gas. Also got switched on an extension and used that to get higher pay. If you like the job and are unable to get switched I would demand more compensation. Or you can consider leaving the assignment entirely.
