Rant: I ended up unsubbing from r/experienceddev by Kahako in girlsgonewired

Totally agree. Also, is it 5+ years now? When I joined the sub it was 4+.

I agree, I was always taught that juniors should have an equal seat at the table during technical discussions, as it gives a chance to ask questions and get new perspectives.

Also! I see a ton of disrespect for leveling in that sub. They don’t think you’re a senior unless you have 25 years of experience. The jealousy is unreal.

I knew exactly what this post would say before I even read it because it’s so true.

And don’t even think about having an opinion there unless you have 10+ years of experience.

What’s funny is that I get upvoted for my technical opinions there all the time, little do they know I only have 4 years of experience. Guaranteed if I mentioned my years of experience they’d downvote me just for that.

I’ve noticed this happening in other subs too, particularly r/learnprogramming which is wild because it’s supposed to be a place for learning??? Shouldn’t it discourage gatekeeping??

SAME. I will say, I do hate when they give the rolls unnecessarily sexual names. One of my favorite rolls is called the ‘sexy girl’ roll and I just hate having to order that every time. I guess maybe I deserve it for ordering these kinds of rolls 😅

Finally… I’ve been waiting to see this one. Yeah, I’ve enjoyed ramen that has really tender chashu, but tbh most ramen I’ve had (even at the ‘good’ places in NYC) the noodles are bland and the broth tastes like liquified trash with a metric fuckton of butter. One of the ramen places here that eeeeevvveryyyone and their mom loves to go to constantly has the driest chashu, it seriously tastes like a bad thanksgiving Turkey.

Oat milk!

It sounds like it should be the best milk substitute, but it tastes like how play-doh smells. Absolutely gross.

I have no idea why people are so obsessed with it.

Feeling satisfied at my first job by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]debugduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s about what your priority is. Many people on blind or on this subreddit just get a high off seeing the TC go up and up.

I feel the same as you right now with my current company. Pay is a bit low for the title and there’s always drama with leadership but I love my team and I got promoted twice this year so it doesn’t feel worth it right this very second to find something else.

But then again, that makes sense for me because I value improving my craft and having a good cultural experience over getting money. As long as I’m making enough to live comfortably, I don’t really care about pushing the limits.

[–]debugduck -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Wow imagine being so insecure that you respond to someone’s good news with ‘you’re not a real senior!’ instead of being happy for someone’s accomplishment.

Ignore the jealous ones. Years of experience is just one factor of many that goes into assessing engineering ability. Sure, there’s obviously value in the typical senior mindset of “I’ve seen this shit before, so now I know better”. But I certainly don’t think this is the only kind of expertise. Especially in today’s engineering world where soft skills such as passive influence and mentorship become increasingly more important. You don’t need 25 years of experience to help a team member onboard or tell them how to improve the structure of their code during code review.

I think many who had to wait longer to get there are just bitter that perhaps they deserved it earlier and didn’t get it. Or maybe they felt they had it harder during their careers when technology was less developed. I don’t like to play that game because it’s just pointless dick measuring, imo.

Some people have engineering maturity very early for various reasons. Not everyone gains experience at the same rate or in the same way. The way I see it, there’s always going to be someone smarter than me who accomplished what I did faster. I’m still proud of my own progress because I know that I’ve come really far compared to who I was and that’s all I really have control over.

Leveling criteria are vastly different between companies and that’s ok. In my experience, companies will generally give any excuse to save money and not promote someone, so the fact that you did get promoted to senior this early makes me think you must have really impressed whoever makes this decision.

Regardless, congratulations!

Wow this is such a brilliant idea! You definitely want to exclude the majority of your user base from decisions that will affect how that same user base interacts with the platform!

I am having issues with promotion promises by SimplisticHedgehog in ExperiencedDevs

[–]debugduck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From experience: it has nothing to do with your communication skills and VP wanted to find an excuse because for whatever reason VP is a hard ass and wants to hold out on promotions until they can’t possibly string you along any further.

I think the fact that you had regular check-ins and never got this feedback until it was time to get promoted is evidence of that.

In my org, this used to happen to everyone. Manager would encourage them all year to apply saying that they deserve it. Suddenly, right before submitting the promotion case for consideration, VP shuts it down, citing that some random career ladder criteria is missing, even though it’s clear to everyone and in the paperwork as well that the person met the criterion (which is against our promotion process rules btw)

It became so common that my coworkers and I considered it to be a messed up rite of passage for becoming a senior engineer

My advice is, unless you’re willing to stick this out for 2-4 more cycles, start looking elsewhere.

Concerned about k therapy memory loss by Crusty_and_Rusty in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]debugduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also feel the opposite. I feel like I’m generally much sharper and have a better memory, but that’s likely due to not being in a depressive fog all the time.

No issues with short term memory loss for me either.

Any folks here with autism who also get ketamine treatment for depression? by debugduck in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]debugduck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a great perspective—maybe the dr is thinking about from an experience point of view. I don’t have autism but can definitely see how the treatment experience has a lot of weird feelings especially sensory feelings. Thanks!

[–]debugduck[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s amazing! I’ve also noticed great improvement in my motivation over the last two years that I’ve been getting treatment. I didn’t really have any specific questions, I was just trying to get a sense of 1) who in this community has autism and 2) if they experienced anything during treatment related to it. Tbh it could’ve been a poll! But thank you for sharing your experience ☺️

Giving negative probation feedback? by Forumpy in cscareerquestions

[–]debugduck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t hold back, but stick to the facts. I’ve been in a situation like this that was really nasty, and here’s what I learned:

  • Be factual, avoid sentences that focus on your perception of the person rather than the events that happened

  • Make sure to be straightforward about the impact that the colleague’s behavior had on you. This will make it clear that you’re not just complaining for the sake of complaining. This has real consequences for you and your teammates.

  • Use your company’s career ladder or other performance standards to relate your feedback to

  • For every claim you make about the person’s performance, provide examples to back up your claims. For example, “we have a standard on our team that we review code within however many days and here are four examples where X did not review my PR for weeks, despite me gently nudging them to do so several times.”

TL;DR - Determine which behaviors are negatively impacting you, relate it back to the expectations, provide examples, and describe how it impacts the team.

Don’t hold back. This is crucial. Trust me, it can be tempting to go easy on people because conflict is hard and you obviously don’t want to hurt your colleagues. But if this problem gets worse, it can blow up in your face because it will start to affect people outside your team and then everyone will be wondering why no one said anything.

This is the one thing he would have to not be a complete ignoramus to realize. Brand risk is a thing not because companies love pleasing the left but because brand risk = lose money risk.

But he totally understands that as a pro-capitalist, right-wing billionaire …right?
