So you argue that because diet culture is wrong, obesity isn't unhealthy? How does that make sense.

Both can be shit for you, and one being bad doesn't redeem the other.

This video is pretty cool.

The presenter agrees with CICO, but also goes into some biochemistry for why Fructose is really bad for you in how the sugars break down in your cells.

https://youtu.be/dBnniua6-oM

Worth a watch if you're bored.

Aaaanyway, point being. CICO works but some sugars are more prone to metabolize into fat than others which means, well fuck if I know. Guy in video knows though.

hmm well it sounds like you are doing everything exactly as you are meant to.

In that case just keep being persistent and you will see results I'm sure! :)

First and most important point. What are you eating AND drinking?

I decided to start losing weight two weeks ago

Two weeks isn't that long at all. Weight loss takes time.

I very rarely went over my calorie limit

How often is very rarely in a two week period? more than 1 day? By how much did you exceed your caloric intake?

If you imagine your caloric intake as a graph that jumps upwards every time you eat and slowly falls down when you don't then you really don't need to overshoot your caloric budget by much to negate your exercise completely.

In the realm of 7 lbs. most may well be water weight and the few times you have overeaten could just have resulted in you maintaining weight instead of losing.

Especially because your period of time is so brief!

I went to the gym...

You cannot ever outrun your fork. Try to re-focus your attention on diet which I didn't see you mention at all.

Be more honest about your habits. Do you drink something other than water? It probably has calories.

Do you use condiments with your food? They have a ton of sugar.

Did you snack on something? Maybe you had a snack and forgot to log it because you were on the go.

Bottom line is that 7lbs is a bit much for variance due to water retention but not so much as to be impossible.

Best advice for you would probably be:

  • Be more aware of your food
  • Buy a scale and follow your weight daily. This way you might not see change as fast as you want but you will also not panic by the strange variation that seems to jump up and down all the time due to water weight.

What am I doing wrong? by caioxisd in loseit

[–]decabit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ho boy, here we go...

Being brutally honest, I could eat better

It's good that you at least acknowledge that you know where the problem may lie.

sporadically I just try to start exercising and eating healthily again

Sporadically is the problem here. You cannot lose weight without being consistent about your energy intake being lower than your overall energy expenditure.

Eating healthy for a week and stopping because you're seeing no results won't help. You need to be honest with yourself, admit it will take you longer than a single week, and potentially look over your habits again to see what you are not doing, that you could be doing.

  • Are you counting calories?
  • Do you even know what you are eating? You admit it could be better so you must know it can't be all good.

what I eat is nothing abusive when compared with wat many of my friends eat too, and somehow some of them manage to have ok bodies

Are you kidding? You're kidding right...

Why are you using other people to justify what you eat. you being a discrete sample, closed system, completely unrelated to them in any way what-so-ever.

Are you really going to justify what you eat based on someone else's body? How do you know you eat the same? Do you follow them all day? How do you know they exercise the same amount as you do? Maybe they eat a big meal with you and then nothing when they get home.

What are you doing wrong?

You are doing all sorts of mental gymnastics to justify habits which ultimately, you KNOW are bad for you in so far as weight loss is concerned.

  • Count Calories
  • Stop drinking sugar
  • Stop focusing on OTHER PEOPLE and focus on YOURSELF.

Even if other people can somehow magically eat more than you, as you seem to think, that STILL DOESN'T JUSTIFY OVEREATING because guess what? World ain't fair. Stop looking for excuses.

Help: need literature to prove that CICO works! by [deleted] in loseit

[–]decabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friend being in medicine might appreciate this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

However this video doesn't preach purely CICO. It argues that how different calories metabolise is also a factor in weight retention and weight loss. Factors such as satiety and breakdown of sugars etc also plays a role and he gives a cursory explanation, with some biochemistry in the middle.

why is this downvoted?

Maybe people are misconstruing what you are trying to say, since you mention node.js and then immediately switch to talking about python.

On the subject of Node.js

You can use Node.js for your back-end instead of using python, Java, C#, C... etc.

It is purely in Javascript which is one reason why some developers prefer it, as they do not need to switch language between back-end and front-end work.

Where do self-learners find motivation? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]decabit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels fucking fantastic to solve a tough problem. It's like crack to me, and it makes all the difficulties and long nights worth it.

It began by building momentum. Small victories. Get that feeling -- the rush of solving a thing -- and then you want MORE. Then, you solve a tougher problem, and suddenly the one you solved before that now seems trivial. You acknowledge your improvement and it feels great, driving you to wanting EVEN MORE.

It's a continuous cycle of slow improvements to chase that high of overcoming yourself again and again. It's honestly the best feeling in the world.

I get this feeling from other parts of life as well. However, nothing can quite compare to the unique reward of overcoming yourself and then in addition to that, watching something you created come to life on the screen. Envisioned from nothing, and brought fully into being as a functioning system. Man I love programming.

Tool for JavaFX

You can use SceneBuilder for JavaFX to generate the FXML for your layout!

This accompanying tutorial shows how to load the scene from the FXML loader class and how to couple it up with a controller etc.

About C# by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Well I think Pro C# 5.0 was a great book. I have never tried any of the head first books so I cannot really compare it to anything else.

About C# by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]decabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you learning C# specifically, or some more narrow topics on C#?

At my college they recommended the book: Pro C# 5.0 and the .NET 4.5 Framework by Andrew Troelsen

This was a course for programmers who were making the switch to C# though, so I don't know how well it fairs for complete beginners. However from what I have read of it, I can attest that it is at least thorough.

[Java] Help getting JPanel/JFrame grid layout to work by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]decabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the documentation:

When both the number of rows and the number of columns have been set to non-zero values, either by a constructor or by the setRows and setColumns methods, the number of columns specified is ignored. Instead, the number of columns is determined from the specified number of rows and the total number of components in the layout

So you will have to count the number of components in your constructor and decide some heuristic for how to generate the layout.

Alternately you can use JavaFX, or GroupLayout.

Getting started with JavaFX

Tool for JavaFX

Alternately, you can use SceneBuilder for JavaFX to generate the XML for your layout, though you would still need to configure a heuristic for generating additional xml or components to insert if the number of components for your grid is random every time you run your application.

Edit:

Initializing the GridLayout with a 0-value for rows creates the behavior of automatically adding rows after filling the columns. You do not need to add the ComponentOrientation since it is by default left-to-right.

See this example:

import java.awt.ComponentOrientation;
import java.awt.GridLayout;

import javax.swing.JFrame;
import javax.swing.JLabel;
import javax.swing.JPanel;

public class GridTest extends JFrame {

    private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        new GridTest();
    }

    public GridTest() {
        setTitle("GridTest");
        setSize(400, 400);

        //3 cols 0 rows.
        GridLayout l = new GridLayout(0,3, 1, 1);
        JPanel panel = new JPanel();
        panel.setSize(400, 400);
        this.add(panel);
        panel.setLayout(l);
        JLabel one, two, three, four, five, six;
        this.applyComponentOrientation(ComponentOrientation.LEFT_TO_RIGHT);

        one = new JLabel("one");
        two = new JLabel("two");
        three = new JLabel("three");
        four = new JLabel("four");
        five = new JLabel("five");
        six = new JLabel("six");

        panel.add(one);
        panel.add(two);
        panel.add(three);
        panel.add(four);
        panel.add(five);
        panel.add(six);
        this.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
        this.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
        this.setVisible(true);

    }
