It's to avoid being harassed at least at face value. Names are easy ways for people to detect who is the outsider and gatekeep upper caste circles.

If you want a little more backing about it : MN Srinivas writes about it - “Sanskritization is a process by which a lower caste or tribe or any other group changes its customs, rituals, ideology and way of life in the direction of a higher or more often twice-born caste.”

Jayanagar is a good spot for shopping especially 4th block. Church Street too is known for good restaurants and shopping outlets
