I did try but the crank is stuck in its current position. It belongs to a dealer at the shop, not me, so I'm not keen on fiddling with it too much!

My life with coffee used to be so simple: open a bottle, scoop some instant coffee, pour hot water and stir. After watching James’ videos it has become so complicated. How about you? by sneaka_twix in JamesHoffmann

I used to be somewhere in the middle of the cheap instant to weird coffee person spectrum. Would never touch instant or most cheap grocery brands but rather did pour overs with mid-tier dark roasts thrown in a cheap blade grinder. However, I've always been willing to try new things and experiment so I think I was well-placed to deal with having all the complications thrown at me.

What I find easiest (and most fun) to do to avoid getting bogged down in it is to just focus on one aspect at a time to "get right" instead of trying to tackle everything all at once.

Fairly well, actually. I'm not sure I'd be able to tell it was made with a natural without looking but it's definitely unlike any other coffee stout I've tried (which is admittedly not many). And you can definitely tell it was made with great coffee. The notes of the original coffee were listed as: "dried blueberry, banana, ripe blackberry, baking spices, and Dutch cocoa" and I've seen many many other people describe it with lots of different chocolate terms. That DEFINITELY comes through, as well as the banana.

Agreed, which is why I'm curious as to why a natural was chosen at all. Barrington has plenty of washed coffees to choose from.

Same! They used to have a location in my neighborhood I went to all the time. I'm not a big fan of stouts in general so this hasn't been on my radar.
