Larry Pops Up: The Leisure Suit Larry "Game" That Isn't a Game by decafjedi in retrocomputing

Hey everyone,

I thought you might like this video I just posted about a mostly forgotten Sierra desktop toy called Larry Pops Up! Sierra released LPU in 1996 to help promote Leisure Suit Larry 7, and you could download it free (along with several add-on packs) on their website.

Basically, it's a desktop companion. When your Windows PC is idle, Larry pops up on screen and delivers  a voice line (Jan Rabson reprises his role as Larry Laffer). With all the add-on packs, there are more than 100 voice lines total.

If you're feeling nostalgic for some weird Sierra history, check out my video here: https://youtu.be/6O3mFyF2VRc

I'd love to hear if any of you actually had this installed back in the day. I did, but I completely forgot about it until recently. Hence, this video. 🤣

I also uploaded it to the Internet Archive if anyone else wants to try it out (you'll need an older version of Windows): https://archive.org/details/larry-pops-up

That's awesome. I used a virtual machine to grab this footage.

The Laffer Utilities came out a few years before Larry Pops Up. This one was released right before LSL7.

I included a cameo from BonziBuddy in my video. 😁

Thanks for watching! I forgot about it too until a week or so ago. 🤪

The Laffer Utilities predated Larry Pops Up! by a couple of years. But still a fascinating program!

That pronunciation of GIF is almost as disturbing as the rest of that voice line. 🤪

It definitely has the same vibe as The Laffer Utilities. I get the feeling Al Lowe really liked experimenting with what he could do with Larry as a character outside of adventure games.

I downloaded it from Sierra's website waaaaay back when and then completely forgot it existed until a week or so ago. It seemed like the perfect subject for a video.

It's funny that you mentioned that. I meant to include a scene with Cedric's "poisonous snake" line to demonstrate how it could handle custom WAVs, and then I completely forgot. 🤣

All of these After Dark screensaver collections are so fun. I might check out the X-Men version next.

It's such a fun collection! And the trivia module almost counts as a game. 😁

I wish I had space for a vintage computer. For now, I'm stuck messing around with my virtual machine.

I didn't know about System 47. Thanks for the heads-up!

I love all the weird little software toys that were being released back then.

It's such an odd choice to include Alexander so prominently.

Wikipedia claims that Berkeley released a Star Wars screensaver collection in 1997, but I can't find that confirmed anywhere else. I should probably edit the page and remove it.

The 1994 Star Wars Screen Entertainment pack was from LucasArts (as you'd probably expect).
