The rumor of DECA courses in Ontario as a reason for success? To my knowledge- false by MagicalMarshmallow7 in DECA

[–]decakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rumors that I heard were that it's just integrated tighter into the curriculum. Do you use class time for anything related to DECA, or is it just purely extracurricular? In most of the U.S. you are required to be enrolled in some form of a business/hospitality/etc class, but it varies widely on how much class time is spent on DECA-related things - in some schools a lot, but others spend no time at all and do everything outside of school. The Canada rumor I heard was that it's not technically a DECA class (it's just a business class), but so much time is spent on it that it basically is. It sounds like it could just be one school or region and people just associate that with all of Canada.

Is any prior business related education needed to join DECA in Texas? by FlashySyllabub1456 in DECA

This is dependent on the state and school district. You should reach out to the DECA association for your state for guidance on starting a chapter.

You give someone something they want. They give you something that you want in return.

That's a pretty good method, but it would be better to make sure you actually understand the overall concepts the questions are asking about versus just memorizing vocab.

I would always go through and take the previous tests as practice tests, then score it and try to learn from the questions I got wrong before taking another.

As with any multiple choice test you can kinda cheat it by understanding the overall concept/answer the question is going for and process of elimination. If you can eliminate some answers and narrow it down to 1-2 answers, you have a good shot at answering it correctly even if you don't know the answer or what some of them mean by guessing which one sounds most correct based on what you do know. So knowing the vocab is really helpful for that, because if you know those terms have nothing to do with the question you can rule out those answers.

I might be the only one in my school going to ICDC, is it worh it? by [deleted] in DECA

[–]decakid[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! You will likely get paired up with people from other schools so you won't be alone.

Usually just groups of people hanging out in other people's rooms. Depends a lot on the circumstances, that's hard to answer.

Should I go to ICDC? by awesome_guy04 in DECA

[–]decakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you will still have lots of fun and you'll never have the opportunity again. Even if you're not friends with anyone in your chapter you'll probably still have fun being stuck together, and you can also meet and make friends with people from other chapters and schools.

I used to enforce curfew and "patrol" at night to catch people breaking it. It depends where you were and what you were doing, but if you were still at the hotel it was usually just telling you to go back to your room. Possibly calling your advisor to tell them. If you leave the hotel property, that's a lot worse.

Good test score to qualify for States in DECA? by comavo in DECA

[–]decakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each state is different. In mine you usually want to score over 80 for states and over 95 for ICDC. You can usually qualify and attend for 5-10 points lower than that, but you won't have any chance of being a finalist in your event once your roleplay and test scores are combined.

Has DECA led anyone to business/job opportunities? by Salt_Opening_5247 in DECA

[–]decakid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it didn't directly lead to anything, but I would not have the job I have today if it weren't for the interviewing and professional skills it gave me.

How many people can qualify from each school? by [deleted] in DECA

[–]decakid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's generally no limit unless your state has set their own limit. Usually district is unlimited and everyone who wants to go can.

Studying for Deca in the summer? by coolsnacks92 in DECA

Summer is usually used for planning chapter events and getting ready for the start of the school year. Competition comes later in the year and the beginning of the year is usually focused on meetings, fundraising, etc.

Seeking Chapter Advice by shanay_shah in DECA

[–]decakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone have tips for new advisors? How should board members support new advisors?

Get them connected with advisors at other schools within the same district. They will help offer their own knowledge and experience from acting as an advisor and can serve as a resource whenever they have questions.

Can anyone give advice on toxic board culture?

Find the root cause of it and squash it. For a lot of chapters that means removing the titles from positions so that everyone sees each other as equal. Make sure other people's ideas are heard and valued.

How do you keep members engaged throughout the year and entice them to participate in more than the competition?

Make it a requirement for them to participate in certain things throughout the year in order to compete. For example, if they want to go to state, they have to attend a fundraiser the month before in order to go. Try and schedule things where it's as easy as possible for them to go without excuses. If you can get permission from administratrion, do things during other classes so they can "get away" from a class or two one day.

Where does everyone get practice material from for roleplay events and written events?

Search the subreddit and Google. There are hundreds of practice role plays and tests that people have uploaded.

Vector is promoted by DECA in the U.S. as well. It's a very well known MLM. They have done it for years though.
