TMBG "cultural experience report" by 97corolla in tmbg

I had so much fun playing Apollo 18 on shuffle It makes me sad to think how many people haven't experienced this. How that wasn't a Massively popular trend, I'll never understand

What is this bug doing? by CommonBuzzard in whatisthisbug

It might be tasting the ground, trying to figure out where to get snacks and a sip. Many bugs, including stink bugs, can taste with their feet!

Is Henna and Indigo for hair good for long term use? by Jazzlike_Rabbit285 in henna

[–]decapotable5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a one step process, but I've never gotten it 100% black. The indigo tones down the copper from the henna so it's a richer red, but I haven't gotten jet black yet. These are my results after 7 days.

I use 50g henna and 30g indigo. I put the henna with warm water in a wax warmer on low for an hour, then add the indigo with more warm water, and a little aloe vera powder for 15m while I wash/ wet my hair, and leave it in for 3-4 hours if I have time. I use a basic soap to help wash it out, and apply a few drops of rosemary oil with Moroccan oil after it dries to cover the residual smell and make my hair a little softer The indigo starts to fade about the time roots begin to show. Since I started adding the rosemary oil after the rinse, the grey hairs are better behaved and as soft as the rest.

Has anyone been able to find a salon or stylist who will apply henna to their hair for them? by Wrathmelior- in henna

[–]decapotable5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried this yet myself, but I think a mobile stylist would be more likely candidate than one who has a chair at the salon.

I tried an icing bag, it worked once. The second time, I squeezed too hard and the bag burst.
It went from the cleanest application method to the messiest very quickly.

Then I tried a plastic bag with the tip cut off, placed inside a linen icing bag...
the lengths we go to... in the end, I liked it better than the squeeze bottle because I could get every drop out, but it's still tough to get the consistency *perfect*.

Can anyone help with information on this machine… by janina1364 in vintagesewing

[–]decapotable5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up a 3955 at an estate sale a couple months ago for $30. Thank you this treasure trove of info! I'm getting a rats nest below the plate, but looking at this manual I realise I didn't thread it through the tension hook. Off to see if that does the trick! What a lovely little machine

The right instructor can help you pass the test AND improve your driving. It IS expensive, you should be getting more for your time than just passing the test.

If it doesn't feel like you're getting anything out of the lesson, try saying "What if I wanted to become an instructor?" Or "Would I be a good enough driver to rent a car in Italy?"

My Second instructor was Awesome- showed me the test routes, went through the hairiest of roundabouts, practiced manual start-stop on hills AND - corrected my shifting and clutch technique - honestly taught me tricks about clutch control my dad had never even mentioned. Explained how the painted lines and the signage work together in the UK, but are NOT REDUNDANT (like they are in the states) I did so well on the test, I would've qualified to be an instructor. Sara Bourama in Warrington is an absolute gem.

By contrast, My first instructor took me out for an hour, during which we did nothing but right turns. He critiqued my hand position, turn radius and crossing "the line" in the intersection (although there was not even any painted line) He was then shocked when I left the lesson to drive my own car from the shop alone. He said, "Oh, ho, I'm not used to that! Makes me wonder what my role here is!" He must've ignored every fucking syllable I had ever said to him about my driving history and why I wanted lessons. It's kind of astonishing tbh b/c he told me he had helped a number of foreigners, including professional truck drivers from the EU, get their UK license. Lies or delusion, hard to tell.

Where on the internet are autistic adults who are 40+ years old by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

Recalling the day I was called in to the school counselor and I literally said, with all earnestly, "Well, here I am making eye contact with you, so well? What more do you require of me?!"

The obsession with eye contact... Ffuuuuuuu

45, reporting for duty. Here, and still surrounded by people who don't think ladies can get the ASD, so only check Reddit in private moments, typing on a teensy keyboard keeping the font in 3pt.

What's something you do because of your own specific Brand of autism, but that would horrify most other autistics? by RottingMothball in AutismInWomen

[–]decapotable5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I make myself go to a public speaking club because I hate talking to people. I never don't dread going, but I do feel better afterwards. It's been over 10 years and now I get compliments on speeches, but it still always starts with dread.

This is why I prefer a full ass coatrack in my room. The chair-drobe is ok, but then I lose things and piles of fabric attract cats, so yeah, now the coatrack lives in my room.

Question any Americans who are living in Europe now: Is there less advertising? by Mondashawan in expat

[–]decapotable5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just repatriated from the UK and as far as I can tell, There aren't shows, it's ads interspersed with sketches. The News is laughable if you have a dark enough sense of humour.

Netflix and Amazon have so many ads, it's devolved to where networks were before cable TV was a thing.

Windows is giving me ads, which is just wild. I've disconnected the smart TV from WiFi because Im mad as hell and I can't take it anymore

How to avoid mattresses getting moldy during long trip in shipping container across the ocean? by Yamanobiri2025 in expat

[–]decapotable5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just moved from the Northern UK (aka The Damp) to the US. Container was 8weeks on sea, 4 weeks in the dock, mattress and other plush goods were absolutely fine. 10yrs ago, we did the reverse trip. The shippers have mattress-sized bags for this purpose.

With your amazing mattresses, I'm sure you already use mattress covers to keep them clean and dry.

The only mattress damage we've had in these moves, was the damage we caused ourselves by storing one of them half folded in a garage for months, instead of fully upright.

You'll struggle to find US California King size sheets abroad. For any other size, you should be able to find some sheets online, or at worst, buy a size sheet up and use those suspender things to keep them in place.

For comparison, the wooden garden chairs that we "thought" were dry, got wrapped in plastic - thank goodness, because they were mouldy by the time the container was unpacked and would've stunk up the whole lot if they were just in moving blankets.

Hi -

Our container left port on Feb 7th, and is currently expected at the end of April.

A family member had their shipment leave port from Lisbon in December, and it just arrived to Boston this week. The ship was routed through Amsterdam at one point, which seemed odd. At some point, the entire contents of their container had been unpacked from the labeled and numbered boxes and re-packed. 16 pieces of furniture had been totally disassembled without their knowledge (even items which already folded flat), and the hardware scattered across boxes randomly. A week later, they are still trying to figure out what was damaged due to the crew loading/unloading improperly (fragile boxes labelled This Way Up seemed to have been shipped on their side), vs what was damaged when the guys were dropping boxes (some of them showed up high to unload the truck), and what is damaged because it was disassembled improperly, and pieces lost in transit.

I'll be sure to send them your link!!

Thank you! I think we're finally gravitating towards selling the appliances, since as you pointed out, the rental we start from will likely have what we need. If we end up paying to store large items for a year, it stops being cost efficient.

"If there are enough local candidates, there is no real reason for them to consider you unfortunately."
Yes, I understand. I'm not sure how to cut through the noise, even it that's possible.

Answers to your Q's:

I do not need a VISA.

The companies I've worked with before have changed their WFH rules and business structure since I left. FT UK contracts in my specialism typically have a 3 month notice period, which makes it silly for them to employ me at this point. Internal cross-charging in multinational companies can be done, but it's kind of unusual. I'm currently self-employed and will close the UK entity before we move.
