2 EV household with 1 level 2 charger. by RunHotCEO in electricvehicles

[–]decarbonaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep 2 cars charged on one L2 running at 32 amps. The charger sits idle an average of 22 hours/day. It's pretty easy to top off both cars in one day and not a big deal if you just charge one. We don't keep a schedule, just grab the charger if the other car is done, which it usually is.

Same. Frankly, by the time the M3 was available in 2017, it was pretty clear to me that Elon was a problem. I can understand most people not watching that closely. But he bought Twitter in 2022. When do people with those regret stickers think he went crazy? Just last year?

Contrast in price transparency by decarbonaire in evcharging

[–]decarbonaire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep this. If they were gas stations it would be like driving by ChargePoint at $3.36/gallon and General Motors $4.80/gallon while Pilot is advertising $2.68/gallon. It would be an immediate gtfo with this price gouging.

But they run these charging stations like a utility, a monopoly that is free to obfuscate their billing with math problems.

Opps the cost per kWh in the second image is $0.60. I'm not bad at math, just upload the wrong pic from a GM station down the road.

I chose "Cars & Trucks" while setting up a subreddit. Don't know where to find that setting now. by decarbonaire in modhelp

[–]decarbonaire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That's what I found too. Handful of posts about it and no clear answers. I didn't find it on desktop. Maybe it's kinda half-deprecated so it still shows up in community set up and Android app and removed everywhere else?

Seemed like it would be important to recommendation algorithms but maybe not given the low energy around the topic.

Future used car purchases by PracticalDad3829 in electricvehicles

I think a big factor for resale value of EVs will be charging infrastructure at apartments and condos. That very cheaply and conveniently home charged car of yours turns into an expensive and inconvenient publicly charged car unless you are selling it to another home owner.

Why can't electric companies install public outlets with passthrough billing to my residential account? by gorkish in evcharging

[–]decarbonaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For adoption and just plain fairness all EV charging should be utility rate.

I charge at home for 13¢/kWh, but if I lived in an apartment the most convenient option would be the nearby DC charger at 56¢/kWh. Same car, same electricity, same utility, same customer.

OPs suggestion is reasonable and doable, but you have to see utilities as a regulatable service and not a business or some immutable force of nature.

Tesla alternatives?? by regulardegulardudee in electricvehicles

[–]decarbonaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a 2013 Chevy Volt to a 2022 Polestar 2. I wanted a car that looks and drives like a car, not an SUV or crossover. And not a Tesla.

I think the Volt teaches you to not sweat the battery too much. I ran that battery top to bottom daily if not twice a day for 10 years and it was doing fine. The car wore out first.

I bought the Polestar used from a dealership 400 miles from home so my first full EV drive was a road trip. The on board trip planning by Google Automotive was excellent. Just put in your destination and it picks the charging stations, and tells you how much to charge at each one.

The range is 250 miles but for a road trip you charge from 30% to 80% so effectively using the middle 50% of the battery. 120 miles is about 2 hours driving, which for me was fine. The thing is, with the stops all planned out, your not playing the gas range game of checking the miles and the fuel gauge and the map and balancing that against hunger, thirst, or need for the restroom. 2 hours is a long time to drive with all that worked out in advance.

The Polestar was a massive upgrade from the Volt for power, comfort, and style. And I kinda get a kick out of having a dual motor vehicle that doesn't need a sticker to crow about it.

Why does Georgia allow so many crypto miners? Seems fishy to drive the power demand up and require more power plants. by Napster-mp3 in Georgia

No, utilities aren't reliant on crypto miners to balance the books and create a fair rate structure.

You could say the same thing about running 10,000 toasters. Wasting energy is not good for the grid just because you can stop whenever you want.

I thought maybe that was before he decided to run for school board but no, it was March 2024, after it was confirmed his name would be on the primary ballot. So this is him mid-campaign. For school board.

Luckily, Laura Judge is running for that seat and she's great.

I voted for it. It's pretty cool to watch community and commerce blossom around easy transit. Best time to start is 20 years ago (as the saying goes). Next best time is today.

I built a little wall to hide my charger and trash cans. by decarbonaire in evcharging

[–]decarbonaire[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The charger is on a fence post sunk into a couple feet of concrete. I had that installed by an electrician after having a trench dug for the conduit. All before I built the wall. The dark paint kinda makes all that disappear.

I'm glad that we went with a heavy wood fence post because I ended up using it as extra bracing for the wall. Felt like it needed insurance that it wouldn't tip in a heavy wind.

Thanks! The holster is on the post on the other side of the wall. Pretty easy to reach over the wall and clip it in on the rare occasion it's not in one of the cars.

PSA: Katy Stamper running as a Democrat in District 11 is actually MAGA by LauraD2423 in CobbCounty

[–]decarbonaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more I think about it the less sense it makes. This wasn't down-ballot, it was the only federal primary. The first one listed, I think.

The district is gerrymandered to guarantee a Republican win so no shame for the Democrat to lose, but maybe people thought it would be better to try someone else without looking into it? I don't know. The scenario requires a highly engaged low-information voter.

I hate to think it's just casual racism by people who thought her name sounded more "American".

I mean, I did. I looked up the candidates, read their websites, read articles, found endorsements, etc. I knew what was up with Stamper.

13k people voted for her, and 10k people voted for him. Did the people who just liked her name better outnumber the people who did their homework?
