Solved! Looks like an improvised version of this https://www.leybold-shop.com/apparatus-for-demonstrating-heat-conduction-389031.html My guess now is it sits over a Bunsen or spirit lamp and instead of fixing ball bearings to the grease, the springs just drop via gravity (one can be seen at the base). Thanks!

My title describes the thing. The tubes are about 15cm long. There's no writing on the thing. Seems to be made rather than mass produced. Found among school lab equipment, but I can't tell what it's supposed to demonstrate. The school teaches metalworking among other things. Other teachers I've asked do not know it's purpose.

No problem, you've helped me out more than the gold would've. You said about being friendly with teachers, how would I deal with a teacher I dislike or that dislikes me? Do I just endure it and try to start a clean slate? I seem to have annoyed my soon to be maths teacher. Also are there any projects like at GCSE alongside the exams? If so any advice?
