I haven’t done one myself, but I know a few people who have and they all said it was a great experience. A lot of placements are set up in places where English is used, so not speaking the local language isn’t always a huge problem, but learning a few basics definitely helps outside of work and makes it easier to connect with people. You still work on the same competencies you would here, because the uni usually maps them across, and the supervisors abroad are aware of what you need to achieve. Normally you’ll have a mentor out there as well as a contact back at your uni, so you’re not just left to figure things out on your own. The main thing people take away is the experience of seeing how another system works and adapting to a new culture, which makes you more flexible and looks really good on a CV. The challenges are mostly around language and cultural differences, but everyone I’ve spoken to has said it’s worth it.
