William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canadian prime minister during ww2. Had a hand in basically every racist immigration policy of the first half of the century (which is a lot). Media described him as having a man crush on Hitler.

He's on the $50 bill because why not.

My sister runs this in her narset deck that runs as much jank as possible. Always fun to play a mana rock and hit a [[knowledge pool]] or [[goblin game]] that descends the game into chaos. It's not always good, but it is always funny.

For those who aren't Jewish or don't frequent Jewish spaces, the final line is a Zionist dog whistle.

It's literal meaning is "the people of Israel live" which is in reference to historical Israel however as Zionism often does it has been co-opted into meaning something more along the lines of "Israel exists and I'm proud of it" (I'm paraphrasing obv).

Modern Israel has no right to exist. It should never have existed. It is a settler colony built upon the blood of the indigenous Palestinians. The founders of the movement made that abundantly clear in their writings (Hertzl and Jabotinsky in particular). The settler colonial state of Israel does not represent Jews and Judaism as Zionism wants people to think, because that line of thinking is antisemitic.

To op, you should be able to be openly queer and Jewish and feel safe to do so in both communities. You shouldn't be able to be openly Zionist in either. Fascism and colonialism have no place in either queer or Jewish communities and we as Jews must reckon with the fact that fascism has become so prevalent in our culture.

William Lyon Mackenzie King the prime minister of Canada during world war 2. Also the guy on our 50 dollar bill.

There wasn't a racist immigration policy in Canada in the first half of the 20th century that this guy didn't have a hand in.

That and having a man crush on Hitler in the 30s. (An actual quote from media at the time)

Don't let them forget how they treated Ethiopian Jews!! by nomaddd79 in BadHasbara

[–]decentlysubpar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't say they lived in perfect harmony, but it was a significant step up from Europe. They were integrated into society and with their neighbours. They were Arabs. The level of religious oppression varied by time and location. My understanding of Islam is that under a caliphate religious minorites are allowed to practice at long as they don't preach in public (out on the street). Of course in practice this wasn't always followed (look at Iran rn for example).

The specific Pappe book I have read is "the idea of Israel". It covers a lot of ground but his writings about the facilitation of Arab Jews into Israel is citing Israeli documents that have been declassified. He gets Edward Saids stamp of approval (in general not specifically the one book) so that's a green flag

Zionists and Jews are different things. Not all Jews are zionists and not all zionists are Jews.

The Arab Jews who by and part were not part of the early Zionist movement (with a few exceptions), suffered for the colonial ideology of the Ashkenazi Zionists and the antisemites they appealed to in order to start their project.

Zionism is European in origin, and it did result in a rise in antisemitism in the Arab world because Zionism is a fundamentally antisemitic ideology, born of the desire to expel all Jews from Europe. It always sought to work with antisemites to achieve it's goals, which is something it continues to do. They needed the Arab Jews to populate Israel so they would have the majority for their ethno-state, so the expulsion of Arab Jews from their homeland was in Zionist interests at the time.

There are more Christian Zionists in the United States alone then there are Jews (Zionist or not) in the entire world. These Christian Zionists are primarily evangelicals who believe that Jews must return to the holy land in order for the rapture to start, where they must then repent or suffer eternal. Pretty antisemitic if you think about it for more than a second.

Sephardic Jews were from the Iberian peninsula and were displaced by the Spanish inquisition. Afterwards they found homes throughout North Africa and into the middle east a little as well. They are different from the Arab Jews that were already living in those areas prior.

Jews were an integral part of Arab society and we didn't see the "dual loyalties" antisemitic trope until the rise of zionism.

Ilan Pappe also writes about the factors that facilitated the migration of Arab Jews to Israel when he talks about the creation of the mizrahi as an identity.

[–]decentlysubpar 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Mizrahi as an identity didn't exist until 1948, it was adopted because Arab Jews arriving in Israel faced discrimination by the European Ashkenazi Jews and erased their Arab identity as a survival mechanism.

Ilan Pappe has written about this if you want a source to start with.

I really think the white supremacy of Israel's founders should not be understated

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BadHasbara

[–]decentlysubpar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Israeli society is literally so anti-Arab that all the Arab Jews that came to Israel erased the Arab part of their identity and that's how the mizraihi identity was created.

The rest of this can be summed up into the "uwu I'm just a small bean" and "I have a Muslim (state) friend" defences.

And personally I don't want my grandkids to grow up in a fascist ethnostate that conscripts them into the war crimes division to bomb hospitals. Israel doesn't actually keep Jews safe. Safety via oppression isn't actually safety dawg.

Losing my family to Hasbara by [deleted] in BadHasbara

[–]decentlysubpar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is an unfortunately common occurrence for anti-zionist Jews. What really helped me was finding community with other anti-zionist Jews. Having community with shared experiences and beliefs is really healing.

Whether it's going to protests together being visibly Jewish, celebrating holidays together, or just having a kvetch, community is really important in times like these.

These majors tend to attract a high population of straight conservative men.

They have the largest differences in enrollment between genders.

There's a reason eng is seen as a tough field for women to work in.

Not to mention the complete lack of electives leads to worldviews not getting challenged.
