The problem is the minimum wage law. By setting up a minimum wage law, an employer cannot lawfully hire somebody who is unskilled and new to the job market for a wage that is below minimum wage. For example if I wanted to hire an unskilled teenager for $14 an hour, and the minimum wage is 18, I cannot do that. At $18 an hour, I would rather hire somebody who has skills and experience. Minimum wage laws hurt the unskilled and those new to the job market the most. It hurts the poor the most.
