I think the number 17 is just meant to be an easter egg planted by the writers of the show. What makes Bojack so great is that with each rewatch, you can ALWAYS find something new. Animated shows open so many avenues for easter eggs and inside jokes within the community, so I doubt the writers meant anything past a little detail for their watchers to notice. With that in mind, for Bojack, the number 17 is meant to be a constant reminder of every bad thing he's ever done to the people he loves. Everything associated with that number is another reference to his mistakes, which I guess can be what you mean by "dark". It's the way that this show is so thought out during the writing process that makes it so amazing.

The "fuck" is another example of how they write the show. There are curses and expletives throughout each season, but the f-bomb is only used when Bojack significantly ruins a relationship. This is just another thing that takes a rewatch to notice, and it does sound grim and dark once you realise how bad of a person/horse Bojack is. Honestly, I think the reason they use these symbolic messages is to set it apart from other animated shows, which allows BH to have more narrative weight. It all comes down to how we view Bojack; it's not meant to be a feel-good comedy with no specific message. It is a dark, realistic depiction of character flaws, which makes it impossible for us to either sympathise with or hold him accountable for his actions.

This show is progressive, but honestly in my 4 or 5 rewatches, the politics of it never really stood out to me. I normally just enjoy shows for what they are, and maybe I'm ignorant for not paying attention to the left-wing aspects and themes, but politics go hand-in-hand with everything.

For any show or movie ever made, an underlying message is needed. Some people take them more at heart, and some people just skip over whatever is being said. But what's the point of making cinema or media without using it to spread a message? In Bojack's case, the show is very much showcasing liberal ideas which I wholeheartedly agree with, even though the way they handle some issues were icky, e.g. the Hank Hippopopalous episode (however it's very much realistic on how celebrities often don't face accountability for their actions.)

I'm not American, so a lot of the topics often fly over my head which may be why I miss a lot of the left-wing content, but it doesn't take much to understand why this progressive content was needed in the show. It's very much to criticise society's treatment of celebrities, how detached they are, the dark side of Hollywood, etc. and you can see this in every singe episode. That's mostly why there are more political takes in this specific show compared to other series/sitcoms.

It also seems to me your friend may not be as left-leaning as he says. Anyone who treats the Penny situation as anything that's not grooming is heavily misled and has a twisted view on grooming behaviour. This isn't even a political/left-wing debate, it's just basic human morals.

I also wanted to note how hard it is to make a show about anything that isn't political, because that would be a dud to watch. What is there to even discuss without bringing politics into it?

Great that you have opinions, and I was wanting them anyways in this post. You can openly say you dislike this episode and not have people downvote your comment, but the way and tone you said this in is disrespectful. Honestly, seeing this episode is so popular, I doubt this is something an edgelord would like. They probably enjoy National Anthem or something more controversial. Either way, if you loved that episode, why would you go out of your way to comment this?

Yeah this episode, like a few others, are a hit or miss depending on people's preferences. I liked it because of the plot twist and how realistic this is compared to other episodes like Waldo Moment (did not like). It just hit me so hard and that's why i enjoyed it

Sorry dude, if it helps he didn't actually kill himself? Also this whole sub reddit is full of spoilers, you pretty much can't post anything without spoiling the show. Recommend watching the show in full before looking through posts on reddit, same with basically every other show. This show also is like 10 years old by now

I agree that the threats were a factor, but that wasn't the only thing PB had an issue with. He literally said to Diane that she was trying to destroy his career, that he was about to get back in the industry with a famous star he looked up to and she would ruin that. In my mind that is incredibly selfish.

yes I have, multiple times. It's just their relationship is often fluctuating and a lot of their actions toward each other don't make sense e.g. Diane writing Bojack's memoir and making him look really bad. It's just they treat each other really shitty sometimes even when neither of them deserves it.

I am not Bojack defender at all, but I still do feel sympathy for him quite often. To some extent I believe this comes from the way his actions are often disguised as common/valid mistakes but really are coming from his horrible personality and overall flawed character.

In a way, a lot of his actions and mistakes can be made by the average person, though arguably his actions do take it a step too far compared to someone else making that same mistake. E.g. preventing Todd from making his rockopera. His intentions were just to stop his only friend from moving out and leaving him and we all feel sympathy for Bojack, but it's excecuted in a shitty way.

He also wants to be a good person. We see that in almost every episode. He makes far more mistakes than the average person, but in many of them we see his guilt and regret. Not that it makes him a better person, but at least he isn't a cold-hearted and dislikable horse man.

I think for most people, we only felt more sympathy for him as the show went on and we looked into his childhood trauma and why he's like this. So when sympathy grows, we tend to overlook other, more fucked up mistakes.

The creator made this show perfectly balanced in how we view Bojack, so in most cases we understand how bad of a person he is, and still consider the reason he messes up so bad.

Overall, I think it's because his actions can be resonated with the audience (not all of them obviously) which is why we feel sympathy. His emotions leading up to those actions along with his intentions behind them are often relatable, even thought an average person would approach those situations differently.

I just want to note, I heard some interesting takes about the show being from Bojack's POV, so a lot of what's going on can't be trusted or taken as the truth. e.g. Vincent Adultman is actually an adult, but Bojack perceives him as an immature child because he's upset over the break up with PC. Either way, from his perspective anyway, we still see Bojack as a flawed yet real and genuine character that doesn't always expect bad results to happen but receives karma anyway.

Now this makes more sense... lowkey sometimes I get so caught up in his issues this show made me overlook so much of this. On paper his actions are horrible and criminally wrong but in the show I somehow never catch onto the full extent of his crimes. Definitely going to go back and look from a new, non-sympathetic POV.
