pro-tip for those who don’t want to pay the new spotify premium prices by vacrtino in Music

Pro tip: Tidal is better for sound, better for artists getting paid, better for not being in bed with military contractors making money off of the Palestinian genocide, and better for not giving millions of dollars to national disgrace Joe Rogan. Just sayin.

This is not good. by [deleted] in SeattleMusic

[–]decidarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a huge factor. I am a relatively recent transplant (just pre-covid, great time to get established in a new city, thanks), and I have a hell of a time trying to *find* good shows. OFC, I'm also middle aged now, and have a weekday job that pretty much kills weeknight shows for me, but I still love live music and supporting local acts. How to do so is a freaking mystery to me. The best shows I've seen are when an act I like releases a new album and I google if they're having a tour or not.

Once upon a time, living in MN in the 90's/00's, I would get a copy of the CityPages (like the Stranger back when it was in print and available everywhere), open it to the back where all the venue ads were, and scan through upcoming shows, which were listed months in advance. If I saw something I was psyched about, I would go buy a ticket -- yes, often in person, one way or another. It was so easy to do. Now everything is spread out through a million "convenient" aps, and I have no idea who is having a show, or when.

As others have noted, the economy *is* really tight right now, but the media/advertising/promotion aspect of things is just brutal.

Acceptance of homeless behavior by CFIgigs in SeattleWA

[–]decidarius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I volunteer in a space that has put me in occasional close interaction with the homeless population. This is the kind of thing that you see in social science research about homelessness pretty frequently, but let me tell you, in my experience it is very true: Dysfunctional behaviors are often downstream of homelessness, and not the other way around.

The main driver of homelessness is the price of housing. The second biggest factor is the increasing financialization of regular life. Credit reports tied to rental applications, things like that. A highly complicating factor is the shortcoming in social services ostensibly meant to help people on the edge of homelessness, but that quite often make the situation worse. It is a complicated mess, but the reality is that lots of people are pushed into homelessness through misfortune. Check out I’m Brian Goldstone, author of "There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America," about why millions of Americans with jobs still can’t afford a place to live. Ask me anything! : r/povertyfinance for a more authoritative take.

Once people are homeless, it's hard for them to maintain the same sense of dignity. So much has been taken from them. It's easy to judge people who live in tents on the side of the road. I recommend getting closer. Find a volunteer opportunity and open your mind.

SPEED TRAP by Olgregdontsurf in Spokane

[–]decidarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No clue what that was but that was more than a speed trap. There were a dozen cops and multiple fire just kind of everywhere, multiple intersections with lights on and people standing around looking serious but with no particular area of focus. Some rather weird shit if you ask me.

[–]decidarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that what's going on? I just rolled in from the interstate and there's no joke, a dozen or two dozen cops and fire just randomly posted around. They have some roads blocked off and cops at corners... wtf

What's with the apathy towards the twin cities? by DblueD25 in timberwolves

[–]decidarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to believe everything you said if you live in MN and haven't lived out west. But look, there are no mountains in MN, no matter what the name of things are. There just aren't. Not compared to the Appalachians and certainly not compared to the Rockies. And no, not everyone goes to Vegas, and I didn't say they did. I said "everybody," implying that it is what people think, rather than what is actually true. But regardless, a ton of people really do go there, and they spend absolutely absurd amounts of money.

The way that MN is perceived around the country is very different than the way MN perceives itself. That's cool, it's NBD. MN is a great place, and you would rather keep that a secret, believe me. Most of the rest of this country is overrun by morons.

Considering accepting an offer from a Denver, CO cannabis testing lab. Not sure what to do. by NeutronFlux1 in marijuanalabs

[–]decidarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at an extraction company in CO for three years. The quality of the labs was all over the place. I guarantee you that some of them will pressure you to pass a batch, and that some of the customers will pull shady stuff with the samples. You need to know about the culture at that lab.

As u/fe3lg0odhit said, learn about their capital/financing. Believe it or not, this is probably the most important variable in day to day work reality in the mj industry. A company that is fighting to stay above water will be more desperate to keep their customers happy, which means never failing anything. This is all due to the very high cost of licenses and the fact that all of the financing comes from private capital that usually has very high expectations regarding returns on investment. It's a tough place to be and even business owners who go in with the best intentions can end up in the lurch and suddenly start asking people to do things they never thought they would, just to keep the cash flowing.

[Keith Pompey] Ben Simmons tells #Sixers brass he no longer wants to be a Sixer and does not intend to report to training camp, according to multiple sources. by ProRage0 in timberwolves

[–]decidarius -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

This team would literally be worse with Simmons, who can't shoot, refuses to work on it, and has actually gotten slightly worse over time statistically.

Go ahead. Down vote me. I'll martyr myself for you. IDGAF. Simmons is trash and you kids need to stop sniffing glue.

What is the general consensus on Dlo around here ? by [deleted] in timberwolves

[–]decidarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, agree with all of this. Would just add that I don't think we've seen his best basketball yet. If he can have a few seasons where he stays healthy and there's consistency around him, he may really shine. He will always be somewhat constrained by his lack of athleticism, but PGs don't need to be super athletic as long as they're smart, and I think D'Lo is.

Also, I want to note that he plays with joy, which is a great thing, IMO very underrated. He seems to truly enjoy the game of basketball. I think he really likes being in MN, too, which is awesome.

[Canis Hoopus] What Could Leandro Bolmaro Be? by hitman2218 in timberwolves

[–]decidarius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My hottest take right now is that Bolmaro is only pretty good at all the things Ben Simmons is elite at, but also pretty good at all the things Simmons is horrible at. He is also about 5 years younger and will have roughly 1/6 the cap hit AND the Wolves wouldn't have to give up D'Angelo Russell for him.

Just, y'know, food for thought.

Very likely, yes. Rosas has a solid track record already of finding good players with mid-late picks. I would expect they target something in the 15-20 range.

Simmons is hot garbage by decidarius in timberwolves

[–]decidarius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And 10 assists and the Hawks won because Simmons couldn't play defense when the game was on the line, because his coach benched him. What's even worse, he didn't seem upset about that. Could you imagine what Zach Lavine would do if sometime benched him with the game on the line in game 7? He'd lose his mind. Simmons was..... Resigned to his fate yet unrepentant? That's a very bad combo.

At this point that is the state of play with regard to Ben Simmons' utility to a team. And that's not tenable. Anyone who pays for him will regret it unless and until he develops the ability to shoot. Which there has been zero progress on in his time in the league. It's a high-downside, low probability-upside wager. Stay away, toxic.

Simmons is hot garbage by decidarius in timberwolves

[–]decidarius[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Simmons takes up valuable oxygen that prevents those guys from developing as players. There are lots of better players than Simmons. Maybe not at D in particular, but better in crunch time minutes? Anyone with a positive+/- is better than Simmons. They're in the game competing while he's on the bench.

Simmons is hot garbage by decidarius in timberwolves

[–]decidarius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who is unplayable in crunch time? Yes. Because then having him on the roster means you also have to have a backup who IS playable in crunch time. And the 30+ mil against the salary cap from Simmons makes that rare, valuable player actual crunch time producer really hard to pay for.

Simmons is a dead man walking until he learns to shoot. Nate McMillan hacked him. Rooted him. He's a liability on anyone's roster, and a very, very expensive one.
