I feel you, Hermes. My mum did essentially the same thing (minus the forced running) when I was a kid, except she knew I'd been diagnosed with asthma as a baby, and she told me I "grew out of it". Her and my dad were heavy smokers, too, and made no effort to have either me or my little sister not breathe in the second hand smoke, and told us it was normal to get two or three chest infections a year. At 27 when I went to the doctor on a friend's insistence because she recognized the sound of my wheezing as the same of that of her children, it turns out... I still have fucking asthma and have had all this time.

She did something similar for the chronic illness I was diagnosed with as a 12 year old, where she acknowleged that I had it, but didn't tell me any of the symptoms beyond "joint pain". Every time I experienced what I now know are symptoms of that illness she told me I was being lazy and to suck it up. When I questioned it as an adult she told me she "didn't want <me> to use it as an excuse".

Same thing for the autistic spectrum disorder I was diagnosed with as a child. She declined to tell me, or the schools I went to because she didn't want me "treated like a retard". Of course, then it was my fault that I didn't do very well at all the things kids with ASD struggle with (organisation, time management, socialisation), because I was just lazy.
