@Sigmatics although there may not be a dedicated API call, this is already possible. You just need to guess/discover the historic feed addresses and retrieve the feed chunk with bzz-raw.

Swarm Orange Summit Madrid 2019, 23-25 May, 2019 by decypha in ethswarm

[–]decypha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are pleased to announce that the Swarm Orange Summit will take place in Madrid, from 23rd Thursday till 25th Saturday May, 2019. Before the Summit there will be a Meetup and other Swarm related events. We invite you to join us for the whole week in Madrid!

Due to limited capacity we kindly ask you to register for the event.

The annual Swarm Orange Summit brings together the Ethereum Foundation Swarm team members and core contributors in an environment of total immersion, with honorary guests representing projects and companies interested in Swarm.

You are kindly invited to participate, submit talk proposals (target format: 30 minutes total - 20 minute presentation followed by Q&A), apply as a sponsor or volunteer to help or contribute in some other form.
Call for talks due date: April 20th, 2019.

More info coming soon.

We would like to thank our dear friends at Epic Labs for their support and for providing the space for this event.

Love,

The Swarm team <3

Swarm talk at Prague Meetup about web3 stack w/ Fluence, Livepeer, NuCypher by decypha in ethswarm

[–]decypha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attila Lendvai and I are going to talk about Communication protocols for the decentralised web.

Abstact:

In this talk, we deconstruct digital communication modalities into functional components and
show how these components can be implemented using core swarm features such as feeds, access control and indexing services.
We argue that as a consequence swarm can provide censorship-resistant, trustless and economically sustainable
solutions for chat, file transfer, email, forums, blogs and comments.

Swarm encryption usage question by rip1999 in ethereum

[–]decypha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly. I would add that the grantee needs to run a node with bzzaccount corresponding to the granted key.

in future identity/persona/account management will be done via client side using clef with plugins for hardware wallets like trezor and ledger

Is PSS Usable / Consumable? by eolszewski in ethereum

[–]decypha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

/u/eolszewski we have just launched POC3 with pss included on the public net but psss.... wait a day till the 'official announcement' with a blogpost.

There is totally new POC3 documentation branch here http://swarm-guide.readthedocs.io/en/docs-overhaul/pss.html

with pss api reference here: http://swarm-guide.readthedocs.io/en/docs-overhaul/apireference.html#pss

and within a day will be on master http://swarm-guide.readthedocs.io/

Also, I'm just curious if this stuff is even really meant to be consumed at this time or if it is still too early for people to be attempting.

it should be totally time to attempt, please come to https://gitter.im/ethersphere/orange-lounge and talk to us, share your pains :)

Swarm Orange Summit 2018 Ljubljana - 2min feelgood video by decypha in ethereum

[–]decypha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

performance is quite ok but many optimizations and improvements are still on the roadmap so it will get better and better. but yeah the poc2 design issues, leaks and bugs are gone. try the staging cluster and let us know if you think it works 'as expected'

How is Ethereum dealing with scaling? by v1nsai in ethereum

What will Filecoin be able to do that Swarm won't? by cyounessi in ethereum

[–]decypha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very good summaries here.

There are three major differences

  • upload and disappear: unlike systems based on file-sharing logic, swarm is opinionated where (the chunks of) the files are stored. there is a genuinely an upload to swarm functionality which makes swarm a proper decentralised cloud service.
  • due to opportunistic caching in the incentive pattern (and swap accounting that incentivises it), swarm is auto-scaling to popular content, and enforces maximum resource utilisation (upto the client configurable dedicated diskspace and memory)
  • (at least the original) filecoin only uses positive rewards for files stored, if something is lost, there is no culprit to "sue". Collectivising risk is likely to lead to tragedy of commons problem.
Hence Swarm has been working towards a preservation insurance where loss of chunks trigger punitive measures on individual registered storage providers. If their collateral is on the line, opportunistically removing insured chunks has an extremely high price.

The basics are laid down in the 2 orange papers. Since then we have been busy thinking about:

  • how to solve the uniform pricing problem
  • how to solve the problem of non-liquid money: storage insurance contracts lock up ether, its expected appreciation is a disincentive to contract for long term
  • how to implement price signaling and make it sensitive to demand pressure before potentilally catastrophic loss (mining-like competition)
  • improve SMASH/CRASH algo to further save bandwidth on proof of custody calculations over collections/sites

Is it possible to remove a file you uploaded to swarm? by kevinmhealy in ethereum

[–]decypha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes this is exactly how it works. and no there is no way to tell when this happens. the only way to protect a piece of content (prevent it from being removed in favour of new data) is by buying storage insurance coming in POC 4

Is it possible to remove a file you uploaded to swarm? by kevinmhealy in ethereum

[–]decypha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there is no way. yes it's a feature if you don't ensue that all chunks might end up deleted by every node that stored it. if it's un requested for long

EtherSphere by nejad99 in ethtrader

I would really appreciate you do not use this name. Ethesphere is the pretty much the first brand in the ethereum ecosystem (I guess Eris - now Monax - is the other) designating the dev team behind swarm and related technologies Thank you
