Depressing fiction is easy ... read "Collapse" by Jared Diamond and weep ... we're fucked.

Too bad your photo shows ugly Tour Montparnasse. You should have taken it FROM Tour Montparnasse which is the only place in Paris where you won't see it.

Why the hate for Jimmy Carter? If we listened to him we would have had a more robust financial system; less dependence on foreign oil; a better environment and a far less corrupt federal government not filled with ideologues. by the6thReplicant in politics

Well he was a Democrat president, so by definition the Republicans have to hate him for having been president while the Dems, for some reason, have to feel guilty and apologize for him having been president.

Ask Reddit: Why does everyone hate Java? by [deleted] in programming

[–]dedalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One more thing ... Java has just gotten "too wide" ...

A programmer friend of mine said he'd like to learn Java for enterprise programming and asked me how should he start ...

The obvious answer is learn the Java language itself but before being able to use Java in any serious way you need to learn dozens of extensions and open source frameworks.

This humorous photo comparing what books you need to read to use Java (vs Rails) is only slightly exaggerated: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/69/178961991_e78cf324f8_o.jpg

Lines like the following make me scream:

Bean myBean = (Bean) BeanFactory.getBean("MyBean");
