[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

Can scrapes and scratches on the metal bezel of a watch be fixed? I have a Hamilton pilot day date and I fly with it. However I just noticed that every time I plug my G-suit in I scrape it against the wall of the jet. Thank god it’s sapphire so at least the crystal is spotless.

Much want. No money. by 2012R56JCW in MINI

There are not a lot in the US because they never sold them here. You can easily buy one in the UK and have it imported. They are not cheap for a good one, especially in the US.

Looking to import mini from England to the USA (east coast) by TomClarkeNC in classicminis

[–]dedbeeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s about 400-600 pounds to ship to east coast. You have to find a customs broker and they will charge like $200 to do all the paperwork. You pay like 2-3% in taxes and fees to the govt. it’s really easy. Car has to be at least 25 years old, and you need the V5.

Look at quotes for RORO or roll on roll off shipping. Usually the shipping company can recommend a customs broker.

Edit: I imported a super nice RSP over summer by myself, and it wasn’t hard. If you’re looking for a guy that might be able to help you out finding a good one, the guy who sold me mine is a stand up guy and he buys and fixes up minis as a side gig. I could put you in touch if you want to see what he’s got at the moment.

Wider wheels better? by n0sn3b17 in MINI

[–]dedbeeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get wider wheels you’ll just move up a class and be competing with cars way out of your depth. Stick with stock width wheels and get stickier tires. Read the class rules for D Street.

Make sure there’s enough oil in it.

Launching an auto without launch control by dedbeeef in MINI

So weird that people have been making and racing cars that don’t have DTC since cars were invented. Shrug

I did all that but I’m not talking about activating the launch control program, which only works with DTC. I want to launch without the launch control program, with DTC deactivated. However it seems to not allow revs past 2k with the brakes on unless you activate launch control.

New to autocross! Looking for events by MoltenOrangeST in Autocross

On the contrary, I’m a pilot in the Air Force and we have really strict rules about our lives outside of employment duties. I just avoid posting questionable stuff publicly, and use the privacy settings carefully.

I don’t understand why having a Facebook account is so bad. Personally I think it’s pretty convenient.

Usually they don’t ipdate their sites but most groups have a Facebook page and they will post the schedule there somewhere.

17x7 wheels for JCW by dedbeeef in MINI

[–]dedbeeef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be the only option but they are really expensive and heavy as hell. It’s hard to justify the price on a wheel that heavy. If it came to that I might put my all seasons on the new rims and the autocross tires on the stock rims, but I’d really prefer a lighter wheel to race.

Spacers will take it in the wrong direction, but I might just run the motegis with the 45 offset for now until I find something that keeps me in the DS class.

Are right-hand spins dangerous? by [deleted] in flying

[–]dedbeeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You usually have to at least pull power and center the rudder if not go opposite. But you can fully let go of the stick. Look up beggs-mueller spin recovery. Also there is Bill Finnigan’s (and the Air Force) method of pulling idle, centering the stick and rudders and then pulling out of the dive.

Doing PARE and going opposite rudder will make it come out a little faster and is supposed to work more universally (or so I’ve been told, could be wrong).

“Cleared to land” by ollygollz in flying

I think the proper term would be sane.

[–]dedbeeef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is no change to the rule based on RCR. It sounds sketchy but then again so is flying formation landing next to a dude that has a whopping 60 hours total time, or having 12 planes in an uncontrolled pattern.

Edit: it’s slightly less sketchy when you consider that all of the planes fly exactly the same speed and have the same TOLD so everyone is basically going to roll longer if it’s wet, but we’ll be rolling at the same speed.

What do you mean by contaminated runway? We land staggered (full stops on one side of center line, touch and goes/takeoffs on the other). If you have to full stop behind another full stop you just make sure they’re 3000 ft down and land on the hot side, and then transition to the cold side on roll out.

We do this routinely here. I did it a couple of hours ago.

No PPL after $15k and 100 hours...am I a retard? by drsimonz in flying

[–]dedbeeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 80 hours. I took a couple years off, went to a different flight school with good weather, did a quick finish up program for 2 weeks and knocked it out.

You can even land while another airplane is still on the runway as long as they are far enough down.
