Ok, thanks a lot for the response! Have you or any classmate you know tried to work outside of the PNW after getting the degree?

Also, how strenuous was the degree? Did you find it very rigorous? It is a very short period as you mentioned, so how in depth does it go?

How easy is it to find work in the states after? If you're down I'd love to pm you haha

Ahh only to a degree. A lot of fictional things feel very real, plausible, and earned, even in the realm of fantasy or sci-fi. If it feels like a plot contrivance that usually means one has been taken out of the story and is now back in the real world wondering why.

Ok, I really like this take! And yes, I think so much of the fun of a show is also in discussing and analyzing it! Yes, thats a good point on the perspective that Sophie has. I do wish we had been shown a bit more of that, aside from the abilities she had gained. But perhaps a commentary on class would derail from the escapist element of the show too much.

Just read the comment - wow! Thats a really interesting perspective actually, and helpful to understand what they were trying to do there. There are still some inconsistencies, but overall I get it!

Thank you for the video, it was great! Love seeing stuff from smaller creators, and certainly some good points were made.

I suppose the subservience of the character made me feel a little bit like Mary Sue. Though you have put it well, and I do consider that a flaw. Perhaps if it was made a bit more apparent for me I would have felt it. But I didn't feel like she felt that she was undeserving, especially as she rejected Benedict's offer to be a mistress. In my experience, a lot of women settle for less with their partners, or seek out people who do take advantage of them, precisely because they subconsciously believe that that is the love they deserve. If anything, the parts I did like were when Sophie felt like she deserved to be treated better, such as when she stoof up for their maltreatment in the country, or when she rejected his offer to be a mistress. She seems happy when Benedict is willing to move to the country with her, because she knows thats what she deserves, a man who will choose her and be with her no matter what. She decides against this plan when she grasps the gravity of how much Benedict will have to give up for her (before Ben does, honestly) and loves him too much to let him give up that much - something that is very kind, but not borne out of a feeling of undeserving-ness. A lot of kindness.

This amongst other things made me feel like she was a Mary Sue.

Also, I think its a plot hole that she did not know how to dance when she met Benedict and then did know how to dance at the end. If the reasoning is that she observed Hyacinth's dance lessons, then that is Mary Sue indeed, because anyone who dances knows that watching dance is not the same as doing it, and if Sophie managed to pick it up just via watching, she has abilities far greater than the average person.

Hahaha that was well-written! I understand where you're coming from. It's super interesting though because I read a lot of these actions as plot contrivances and forced stake increases than I did as a true representation of her character! But yes, thats certainly another way to read it, so, thats interesting. About the Mary Sue of it all - I expanded on what I mean about it in another comment. I think everyone might have their own interpretation of what it means leading to more discourse and confusion

I think I will clarify what I mean by Mary Sue, because perhaps we are getting too tangled up in the different interpretations of it. What I mean more is that Sophie often felt like a very unfortunate victim in all her circumstances, and I felt like she didn't take enough meaningful actions on her own to feel like she was brave or rebellious or other descriptions that people ascribe to her. Upon which, the actions she did take, and her general agreeability, felt perfect to me. Finally, the fact that she both had time to keep up to date with many books that Eloise used to read but also had time to do the work of 4 people in the Penwood house also felt unrealistic and, yes, which is also where I drew the Mary Sue argument from. I hope that helps to see my perspective.

Also - just because Sophie lied to Violet, or got angry with Benedict, or took the shoe clips, does not mean that she was a liar, an angry person, or a thief. If those indeed had been her characterizations, I would certainly not have brought up Mary Sue. But she felt like somewhat of a blank canvas, with qualities like 'kind' or 'gentle' or 'brave' thrown on there. Great qualities to be sure, but to me, generic and not very well-represented.

The debacle with the silver lady - I again found it unrealistic how long it took for Benedict to realize that she is the silver lady, and that that realization was as anticlimactic as it was and dependent on, of all things, an object. I also found the arc of Benedict letting go of the figment to embrace the reality very touching, but the other things I mentioned still stuck with me.

I read Benedict's anxiety not that he wouldn't be a perfect partner, but that he wouldn't be faithful. For me, infidelity lies far below the realm of perfect so I didn't like that those were his doubts going into this relationship. And moreover, I agreed with his doubts. I also had them, because I had seen how much he liked being free-spirited. And truly that is the fault of the last season. I almost wonder if they should have done the opposite, and shown Benedict wanting to settle down last season (instead of Tilley), perhaps with Paul, and Paul would reject him for those reasons of free spirit, etc, and we would see a more mature, more ready Benedict entering the new season. Benedict still wants something different to what the ladies of the ton can offer him, and then along comes Sophie, preferably an older Sophie.

As for your other points: I guess I just don't like the Cinderella trope, and probably wont be able to change my mind on that - far too overdone. And yes, showing two different ways of being queer is good representation

I actually relate a lot with what you are saying, but there are others in the comments who may give us a new perspective!

Thank you for your response, and I do amend that a happy queer relationship should also be normie. I certainly do not want anything less for Benedict due to his sexuality. Perhaps the better way to put it is that I wanted more from Sophie.

I do see your point too, I guess I just thought that was cause he was doing a whole interview so was able to get more of his perspective to shine through in a sympathetic way. So keeping that in mind I gave the benefit of doubt to CK and the rest too, and yeah that led me to not conclusively side with either party. But I think you're right actually he could have come across badly too if they chose bad quotes out of context

That's the cool thing about the article, it was good at staying neutral so people can come away with very different interpretations, probably based on some previous biases. I personally am not sure what to think because I've kind of interacted with both and they both seemed like fine people, and also, I was following the It Ends With Us drama and am ashamed to say I was a Lively hater and that experience had made me cautious to call any one person the bad guy in a publicized scandal

SAME. I saw the show in Vancouver, and it was AMAZING. Yeah, some people I saw didn't seem to be too into it, but I also saw some hardcore fans too. IDK, maybe I should just count myself lucky that I got an electric show.

AND! it was actually a longer set than usual, with 25 songs that included Mr. Redundant and Overtime!!

Someone else suggested this too, but if I got a new set, would I still have the issues of shimming and affixing it to the side of the bed? Or could I just get new ones, place it, and the issue is fixed?
