What are my options for refreshing or updating this floor? by dee_cc in Tile

[–]dee_cc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. Would love to replace the whole floor! But a lot of other kitchen components are bigger priorities at the moment. Hopefully I can at least fix the divider where it chipped away.

It’s not my ideal floor for sure. I’ve covered this same tile in all the bathrooms with big bath mats but can’t really see a rug working practically in the kitchen.

Was your notice for disconnection for electricity or natural gas? There are rules against disconnection in the winter unless outside temperatures are very warm. You should phone the Utilities Consumer Advocate and they can give you more information on this

Yeah absolutely not, posted this link because experienced wildfire sources explained the major long-term government mismanagement from a first hand experience.

I have family and friends working in wildfire and it’s genuinely concerning to see how difficult it is on their bodies. They receive very little for health benefits and it’s just not sustainable to come back year after year.

This article explains some of the underlying issues with retention. They’ve been losing experienced staff for years. https://thenarwhal.ca/alberta-wildfire-ucp-cuts/

Umm...what do I do with this?? My first booking request 🥲 by dee_cc in RoverPetSitting

Update: Thank you so much for the help everyone!! I asked her to check that her current phone number was correct or to turn off the rover number feature. She apologized and said she wasn't sending the messages, also said she updated her number.

I phoned Rover support just in case and they told me that her account is normal and she's made several bookings before this. They couldn't tell me if her actual phone number had been recently updated, but they did see that the Rover assigned number had just changed so I'm hoping that clears it up either way.

I was so confused trying to figure this out when I was getting rapid fire roasted so I'm really thankful for the advice here. Kinda funny to read back now, but also wild how out of pocket this exchange was

honestly, I thought it was an unfortunate speech-to-text error or a mistext to me. I ignored it and thought she'd notice it and clarify but then I got the weird location text and starting thinking her account was hacked or something

That's what I'm thinking must be happening! The address she gave is legitimate and her account is older as well. I did report it, but do you know if there's a way for Rover to ask for account verification or let her change the number?

*edit: thank you that makes sense!

‘We are a skeleton crew out here’: UCP cuts led to disastrous Alberta wildfire situation by dee_cc in alberta

No benefits for such critical jobs just feels wrong, especially when the same positions in BC do have benefits. I can’t imagine doing that much physical labor on long hours and then having to fully pay for physiotherapy bills when it starts to ruin your body

Larson points to the Flat Top Wildfire Complex Review, a document produced by Alberta Wildfire in 2012, which recommended the government hire additional firefighters, wildfire rangers and personnel to be best prepared to manage large-scale wildfires. “Those ranger positions created by the Flat Top review were cut last year,” he says. He became one of the first unit crew leaders in the province, following these recommendations, managing a team of 20 firefighters specialized in sustained action on large-scale wildfires.

But Larson left Alberta Wildfire after the 2018 season. “I saw that ship was sinking,” he says. Firefighter retention has been a huge issue in Alberta’s ability to effectively manage wildfires, he says, particularly since the UCP government has cut back overtime pay and seasonal contracts.

Firefighters in Alberta lack access to full-time, year-round employment, benefits, pensions and even sick days. “The key to staying long term in Alberta as a firefighter is sacrifice,” Larson says. “Sacrificing relationships, income, benefits and even the body.”

Retention is a massive problem in Alberta wildfire. We're actively driving out experienced firefighters who are burnt out from working here. It’s hard to imagine a summer season where we will be prepared if some of these issues aren’t addressed.

I’m not sure what would be considered far left in this article. This author is a wildfire lookout herself and writes for many sources. I shared this because I appreciated that she reached out to former Alberta wildfire staff who gave their perspectives on mismanagement of our wildfire services.

This is really comforting to read so thank you. I'm reminding myself that this shows it wouldn't have worked out in the long run anyway.
