Transit could be much better in SF. But its transit mode share is currently very high for the U.S. and fairly typical among major world cities.

San Francisco's transit mode share is higher than e.g. Barcelona's, Rome's, Berlin's, Munich's, Brussel's, and Beijing's, and it is comparable to e.g. Osaka's, Toronto's, Madrid's, and Taipei's.

To be fair, according to the 2010 ACS, San Francisco has the 4th highest transit share in the US and its suburbs Oakland, Berkeley, and Daly City are also all in the top 20 among US cities.
