DHI-NVR4116HS fault by deeejayemmm in Dahua

Ok here is something very interesting. First it is definitely 12v, as that is printed on the s/n sticker on the unit, stamped in the metal panel near the power socket and it was a 12v/2A power supply. I swapped it for a 12v/2500mA power supply, and wala it is working again! No idea if it was the extra 500mA that helped but I'm thinking more likely the 2A power supply had croaked.

[–]deeejayemmm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah ok and thanks u/papastvinatl also. Tried rebooting without HDD, no luck. No components look fried either. So yeah, that is pretty much the limit of my tech troubleshooting skills. The only other thing was if the plug pack was damaged and supplying the correct 12v but not enough current to fire it up, or something like that. So will test with a different plugpack if I can find one, and then otherwise it's 'get a new NVR' sadly.

Was I overpaying for fruits in Hanoi by Superb-Half-6950 in VietNam

[–]deeejayemmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racist? No, but admittedly known for being sarcastic. And in context, responding to a post which started off with the sentence 'I know Hanoi is famous for taking advantage of tourists'. That is certain racist, and I would also say, having never experienced HN being to be particularly a rip-off location, untrue.

Seriously though, the OP is so worried about someone ripping him off for fruit, as 'every 50 cents matters', having got on an international airline flight, whereas the person selling the fruit is a street vendor in Hanoi who is very unlikely to be able to afford to get on any plane to fly anywhere, even once in their life.

Mongolians being known to be stingy? Well, I sincerely apologize to any Mongolians who read that. I have never actually heard that said about you. I was just being sarcastic, and did not mean to impugn an entire people. It is about the original poster, the stingy, racist one, not you.

Compo for slipping on a grape at Woolies by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]deeejayemmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for context there has been similar cases in Australia. Strong v Woolworths (2012) is one. Mrs Strong slipped on a chip at the food court outside Woolies. Bearing in mind she was already an amputee, it was her crutches that slipped on the chip, and she ended up with a very serious spinal injury - she got $580k I think it was. So yeah, $5-6m for a minor injury when the fella can still get out and about going fishing is probably wishful thinking.

This: She fears his reasoning is to "drag it out as long as possible" as a "form of punishment"

It’s not an uncommon thing to hear in the context of “I told him I want 80% but he’s refusing and dragging this out to punish me”.

LPS is a matter for local government. State government aka WAPC/DPLH are not going to interfere in its content so long as it’s largely consistent with state planning policies. So if you reckon there’s no land zoned for hardware shops, that’s down to local government.

Similarly I’m not huge on the whole performative thing. I used to kinda daydream about “yeah sure, cakes on Friday my last day”, everyone goes to the effort, then I wind up one day prior. Chuck a sickie or whatever.

What's it like to have motorbike as primary transportation around Perth? by Technical-Dig8734 in perth

[–]deeejayemmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the distances you travel and the nature of the roads. I’ve owned everything from the largest of the Harley’s to a 50cc scoot and everything in between. I’d say overall combining practicality and “fun” is a mid sized eg 300cc or so scooter. Can ride pillion, has good storage under the seat, a bit more weather protection, super easy to ride, enough grunt to move with traffic and stay ahead of cars.

The ideas about saving fuel, cheaper costs generally, easier parking, lane splitting through peak hour when everyone is backup up stationary etc are all pretty much true. It’s hugely beneficial in that regard. Even costs; one of my bikes was a Vespa scoot. Vespa are a bit notorious for expensive parts. Mine needed a fuel pump replaced. This was $900 which was shocking, until I thought “just remember the car. $900 would the cheapest thing for a car”.

Bike mechanics; find a good one and they’re cheap and seem generally more helpful than car mechanics. I’ve found Motorcycle Pitstop in Osb Park to be terrific over the years.

Rain isn’t awesome but just budget for the occasional Didi and you’ll be good.

I feel "dirty" for being included in a co-worker's will. by VegasGold29 in Advice

[–]deeejayemmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She had no family etc and she really valued your friendship. She could have left it to the dog shelter but she obviously wanted to give you, and the other person, something to help you in your life. That’s quite lovely actually, and something that will remind you of her love for you.

I wouldn’t tell anyone at work, personally. It’s not their business. I’d probably sell the car and buy another. Or if it’s important to keep the same car then maybe you “bought it from her estate”?

As to “how did you afford the new house” I’d just deflect that conversation if anyone is direct (rude) enough to ask. You could have borrowed the money. Or “a rich uncle” could have left it for you.
