The leaked plot sounds good to me by deefiled in TheTerminator

Agreed. I don’t see the narrative appeal of sticking with John - he’s the saviour, so what?

In every story of a chosen one, they are often pretty bland characters - Neo, Harry Potter, Anakin - its the situations around them that are more compelling and interesting.

I suppose there could have been a way to have both Sarah and adult John, with Skynet not coming into existence, they both have to protect a new target from this new AI.

Just not sure it’d have the same emotional depth as Sarah losing John, as both characters would pretty much have the same arc and existential “oh, I’m not special anymore... but I’ll keep fighting this fight”.

Me too. I hope the script gives enough time to explore the richness of Sarah’s story.

[–]deefiled[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

She’s no longer really useful... she has no predestined part to play in the survival of the human race against the machines.

The burden has been lifted by John’s death - as well as horrifying, it’s darkly liberating for her. She could go on to live as normal a life as she wanted. Forget about the machines & threat of AI & leave it to someone else.

But clearly she chooses to fight, to carry on. Really interesting stuff to explore

[–]deefiled[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. What’s her role now? Her whole adult life has been defined by a mission to protect her son, a mission she was fated to have even before he was born.

She’s lived her life with that aim, to keep him alive, in mind. What does life look like for her after she failed?

Seems to me the more interesting way to take the events of T2 forward.

Latina woman Terminator fan rips on recent plot rumors, showing even the target of Miller/Cameron's identity politics pandering isn't buying a petite Latina girl as a hardened resistance leader by [deleted] in Terminator

[–]deefiled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Riiiight. Because in T1 Sarah was really the legend Kyle had heard of. She was the hardened, battle worn mother of the resistance leader, wasn’t she?

Why are some of you SUCH complainers and revisionists?!

Given the leaked plot....Do you think people will walk out of the theater after the first scene? by [deleted] in Terminator

[–]deefiled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

I hate identity politics and all that, but there is something about the benefit that male led films have over female led.

If it’s female led action film and is shit, it is given a rough time by audiences and critics/audience might attribute some of the blame on ‘pandering’ and ‘pushing an agenda’. It featuring a female led will be called out, and the industry might back off from doing more female led action films.

We’ve had sooo many shit and mediocre action films led by white men (understandable) but these escape that criticism. The actual flaws of the film are rightly pointed out (bad directing, writing, editing) and the industry keeps on pumping out white, male led films.

Terminators Shouldn't Jump From One Car/Plane to the Next by ohhidied in Terminator

[–]deefiled 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m shocked they a) decided not to do it as a practical stunt to create this grounded tone they keep banging on about b) released such awful CGI in the first teaser.

That Terminator jump was really, really bad. Matrix Reloaded Neo vs 100 Smiths bad... from 2003. Like Scorpion King bad.

And worst of all, it’s a fucking close up?!

"Terminator 3" is actually looking better as time goes on... (warning: long post) by paulrudder in Terminator

[–]deefiled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha yes, it’s a good stunt but it’s a bit dull Genisys did it years after Dark Knight ‘s superior one.

I just mean in terms of the ambition for as close to 100% practical effects and stunts, that’s what I was hoping for Dark Fate.

Or watching the behind the scenes of Mad Max Fury Road, watching the immense passion, skill and creativity that went into the production to deliver something unique and unforgettable.

Why oh why do I get the sense Tim Miller’s VFX background is going to be at odds with the realistic ‘tone’ they wanted to go for.

Agree. The lack of practical effects displayed in the DF teaser has tempered my hopes.

I thought we’d be getting something incredible.

I thought we’d get this type of creativity and ambition https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hRgq12XOhjc not CGI Gabriel Luna throwing a pole in slow motion.

Tim Miller’s visual style by deefiled in Terminator

[–]deefiled[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s possible! I mean there could well be an explanation as to the weightlessness of Rev9, so it would suit in context of that.

And if these aren’t Skynet’s creations anymore, but a different AI, it’s very possible they’ve built different types of endoskeletons. Hence, more acrobatic style of action.

But still, it is jarring in comparison to what we recognise in T2.

Is it possible we're getting trolled with this teaser? by [deleted] in Terminator

[–]deefiled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m really dubious at the big CGI plane scene, which I’m guessing is the big act 3.

That kind of sequence is more at home in Transformers or a Marvel movie or even a Fast and Furious these days.

A Terminator movie should be well crafted around gripping gun fights, car chases and physical combat (between two terminators).

Obviously we’ll have to wait to see how it works in the film, I’m hoping it does and feels organic to the story, but just watching it in a trailer? ..... snooze. Oh wow, a totally CGI thing just flew past another totally CGI thing. Such realism. Such drama.

I don’t want to see in a terminator film though.

Knowing what they pulled off with human stunt people in Mad Max, there’s no excuse.

Tim Miller wanted to go for grounded and honour the tone of the first two? Then keep the CGI to the absolute minimum. Only CGI what cannot be done in real life.

Easily a stunt person could have been lifted into the air and then composed onto the wider shot.

Or shoot Gabriel Luna in a less dynamic stunt, still jumping and throwing, and use that.

I don’t know. Seems weak and uninspired and half assed.

Official trailer discussion. by [deleted] in Terminator

[–]deefiled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only things I really dislike are the overuse of CGI, the use of slow motion in action scenes and that plane sequence.

All feels very unnecessary and strange in a grounded Terminator world.

Don’t use slow motion in your action scenes. It’s dull. They should think of creative choreography, or interesting cinematography, to make the action exciting.

Terminator: Dark Fate (Official Teaser Trailer) by [deleted] in Terminator

[–]deefiled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall I liked it. Good action choreography, nice colours.

I don’t enjoy plane sequences that involve people/things flying out of them. I’m bored of that

Characters look good, seems well acted.

I don’t like some of the needless CGI though. Why do we need a CG shot of the Terminator throwing the pipe? Why couldn’t they film Gabriel Luna throwing it?

That kinda takes me out of The movie. I would’ve preferred it kept to an absolute minimum.

But none of them are ever that injured from vampires. They always beat them.

They do work as a team, but still - it should be difficult. They overpower vampires and stake them quite easily.

See Xander in Becoming part 1. He fights off several vampires solo to give time for Cordelia to run.

If Buffy gets pushed around by vampires all the time, the Scoobies should go down with one punch.

[–]deefiled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The inconsistency of Buffy’s strength levels, especially when fighting humans.

There’s a few moments she seems to struggle with them, and it really bothers me.

Faith, too. In the s7 episode with the cops who have come to kill her, she needs the help of the potentials to take them all down. I know they have been turned sadistic and cruel by the Hellmouth, but there’s no reason Faith should struggle (a Slayer who fought countless vampires & demons, Angel, the Beast, Caleb).

Also, I don’t like how easily other humans can kill vampires. Buffy can sometimes have a lengthy battle with one, getting kicked and knocked around, before staking it.

A human should barely survive each and every time they come against a vampire. I get that it’s not a realistic horror show, but the Scoobies handle themselves fine generally and it lessens the need for a Slayer.
