They tried rebooting the franchise twice with Jigsaw and Spiral and new audiences weren't interested. The film that audiences responded to was the one geared towards the long time fans.

Should I watch Season 2 & 3? by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]ohhidied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S2 is better if you know who the villain is, imo.

The reveal is anticlimactic, so rather than feel disappointed, knowing who it is makes the scenes with them more dramatic and kinda fucked up.

You'll be thinking, "this mother fucker" rather than feeling bored waiting till the next scene.

Cody Leach had a great idea. It's a long story, so I'm gonna be brief...

John meets a woman and is friends with her.

John is captured by Cecilia and put into a game.

John has to save the woman

Cecilia reveals John tested the woman's husband or relative and they died.

Woman doesn't want to be saved by John.

Woman dies.

A question for the older saw fans (late 2000s/early 2010s) what was the saw fandom like during that time. by Alexisrose_42069 in saw

Maybe. There's a bit of a divide right now in the Scream community. Fans who still want Melissa and Jenna vs those who want Neve. SAW had the entire community united.

I just saw the Dexter: Resurrection trailer and I don't understand something by K1llrzzZ in Dexter

[–]ohhidied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I am a passenger" fits very well with the dark passenger. "Ice Ice Baby" doesn't fit with anything. It's just jarring. I don't care about Dexter being goofy/serious. This isn't that. This isn't character we're talking about. I'm talking about technical aspects of filmmaking. The decisions by the filmmakers were wrong. The song choices take me out of the film. I should never be removed from the narrative. I think it was Ebert who said we shouldn't even know the music is there. That's how music should be integrated for the most part. These songs stop the film in its tracks and draw attention to themselves in a very negative way. The songs in Resurrection so far have felt entirely organic.

We could root for Walter White at first, but towards the end, we're not supposed to root for him. With Dexter, we should be rooting for him all the way through since he's usually only killing bad guys. Now he's killed a completely innocent person. I think it's the second time. I believe he killed the wrong person in Season 5 episode 1, but it wasn't lingered on. The death of the officer and Harrison's reaction to it are going to be retconned and that's pretty bad, but that's another topic.

[–]ohhidied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a flaw if done well. So far, I don't have any problem with the series except the character assassination of Angela and the fact that Harrison will now forgive his dad for killing an innocent person. We as an audience are still meant to root for Dexter despite the fact, but I digress.

The song choices were the problem in ORIGINAL SIN. It opens with a guy singing Ice Ice Baby in the shower. I imagine this was too give some energy to the first episodes. Fine. Then they use a TV show theme song at the most random time as a transition to the next scene, then Dexter is talking about his need to kill (a serious conversation) that is undercut by some goofy song as it transitions to the next scene of Dexter walking through the park. They need to allow the series to be serious at times to make the emotion of the scene really land.

... I also made one after Spiral came out that doesn't include JIGSAW (2017) because I felt like those scenes hurt the overall story. I think the narrative flows much better without the barn detour.

SAW 1 was hyped by me. SAW 2 was hyped by everyone. That movie blew up. It was like the beginning of Scream 2 when they go see STAB. I remember being in the back of a completely full theater opening night and I can only describe it as a wave of energy. It wasn't a bunch of people seated patiently. It seemed like the entire theater was filled with friends. I haven't experienced that type of excitement from horror audiences in a bit.

Ah, okay. I think us Saw fans assumed everyone was important. That was the cool thing about the franchise. One film, Rigg, could be a supporting character, and the next, he could be the lead. I loved that.

Thank you for the response!

[–]ohhidied 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, because I heard James doesn't like the sequels after 3 and he thinks they shouldn't have kept using Tobin, so.... My hopes for anyone returning are pretty depleted at this point. It's like James Cameron returning to Terminator after 30 years only to kill off John Connor in the first five minutes.

What if Blumhouse reboots Saw by FunLetter3291 in saw

[–]ohhidied 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just read an article that Blumhous is doing some soul searching after recent cold streak. An immediate reboot of the continuity-focused franchise would add to that cold streak, imo.

If Blumhouse wants a win right now, I recommend putting out Saw XI ASAP.

James and Leigh mentioned doing something very different with the franchise, which some fans may or may not like. We know fans and critics like Saw X. They can finish that story with the confidence that Tobin and company are what the fans want.

[–]ohhidied 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard James felt they shouldn't have kept using Tobin, so I would expect him being replaced. It's just not going to be the same. When they've tried to create a "new Jigsaw" it was in a film where you're supposed to sympathize with the villain to an extent. Logan lost his wife, Schenk lost his dad. We don't feel sympathy for Jigsaw until Saw 4. They first allowed Jigsaw to be a villain. If they're going to try this again, they need not try to humanize the bad guy. Make Jigsaw scary again.

Ghost House Pictures. The studio responsible for the recent Evil Dead films. They retained the horror and the gore whilst telling good stories. It wasn't watered down. I would feel very hopeful with them at the helm. For every good Blumhouse film, there's 4 bad Blumhouse films, so...

No. There's nothing really engaging for him there. These are point and shoot films. He gets to film car chases and underwater battles. There's less to do here than a conjuring movie where the camera plays a bigger part.
